How best to set up new WSUS server with respect to superseded updates?

I'm setting up a WSUS server to provide updates for Windows 7 / 10, Office 2007 / 2013 / 2016, and Windows Server 2003 through 2012 R2.

I have WSUS set to only download updates once approved, and I used an automatic approval rule to approve updates to the above products for Critical / Security updates.

This resulted in 9182 approved updates that are now being downloaded onto my WSUS server. I provisioned the hard drive for 300 GB, but I fear this might be too small with this amount of updates. However, it seems higher than most recommendations I've found.

Will I have issues with this size partition?

Am I downloading too many updates? It seems like this is the bare minimum (I'd like to eventually add regular updates and update rollups to this server).

I noticed the majority of the updates it's downloading are superseded. From my reading of the forum posts, the best practice would be to let it download all of the superseded updates that were auto-approved, then decline them after a month or so as long as they are 100% not applicable. Is this correct? Then once I decline them, run the Server Cleanup Wizard to remove them?

This is in an environment where we can be fairly certain that the clients out there have all or most of their required updates already (via a previous WSUS server that become broken after being left unmaintained).

This just seems like a lot of overhead so I'm wondering if I'm doing anything wrong here, or if I'm on the right track.

Thanks.

New WSUS install on Srv 2016, Initial Synchronisation SQL issues

So I decided to start upgrading to Server 2016, and start with a new WSUS server.

I followed all the steps for the install.. Basic install on a clean Server Core VM, (tried both WID and SQL), set full access permissions to NETWORK SERVICE in %windir%\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v4... (as well as Framework64 just in case), %windir%\Temp as the WSUS download path.

When I'm trying to run the initial synchronisation, it always stays at 0% with no progress, even if left to run for hours.

The log file is growing ridiculously fast with messages like this:

2016-10-31 10:36:04.674 UTCWarningWsusService.30DBConnection.ExecuteCommandNoResultSqlException occurred. Number 50000 and message invalid update identity in XML for update 002370D7-F7BE-4701-B9FE-85E2092C1B85\100

http://imgur.com/o7Via3Z.jpg

I've tried over and over again, and the issue is always the same. The VM is updated with the latest CU from Windows update. Any searches online didn't lead to anything remotely similar to this.

Something tells me that the database created by WSUS during the postinstall is missing something =/

Any ideas?

HotFix KB2819484 not Available for Windows Server 2012

I'm trying to do a WSUS export and the cab file keeps failing due to the size being too large.  I found the thread where there was a hotfix so that a gzip file could be created on a Windows Server 2012.  However when I got to the following link

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2819484

When I run the hotfix that is available for download for Windows Server 2012 (I've tried both the link via email and the Windows Catalog), it says that it is not applicable for this system (Windows Server 2012). It appears that maybe the link is pointing to a wrong file?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone I manage our own internal WSUS server for our organization. We've noticed there are alot of computers failing to check in for updates and its pretty constant now. I've done some digging and tried alot of different things that is mentioned regarding this error code but it doesnt seem to be fixing it. This only started happening recently. Problems installing Win 10 Anniversary update via WSUS

I have a 2012 R2 server trying to install update "Feature update to Windows 10 Enterprise, version 1607, en-us", also "Feature update to Windows 10 Pro, version 1607, en-us".

I approved the updates and the client sees the update, it downloads 100% and starts the install, goes to 100% and then it starts the download over again.  Eventually erroring with "There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later.  If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help:" but doesn't give me any other info.  If I click retry it will start the download over and the same thing happens.

The server is up to date in patches including KB3159706 along with the post installation steps including adding the .esd to the mime types.

I have around 50 computers running Win10 and it fails on all of them, has got to do something with WSUS.  Any help would be appreciated.

Need help reducing size of WsusContent directory

We have a new WSUS server (Server 2012 R2 - WSUS 6.3.9600.18324) which has been up for approx one month. First update approval on 9/28/16 pulled down over 8K updates. Server was originally created with a 300GB C: drive and had to be expanded to 400GB as the C:\WSUS\WsusContent folder was filling up the drive. It has continued to max out this drive currently at 383GB. I have run the Server Cleanup Wizard which has not helped. Since the original approval on 9/28 I have since removed Win8.1 and Vista from the Products list as we no longer have any of those client OS's on the network.

As a comparison, our previous WSUS server (Server 2008 R2 - WSUS 3.2.7600.274) which is still up and syncing every night, only contains 146GB data and pulls down updates for many more products.

Last Contact Updates, But Last Status Report Will Not

We have one Windows 10 laptop that is showing in WSUS  with the Last Contact column in the report showing the current date and time, but the Last Status Report column remains at a date last month and No Status Count column rises daily.

Since the Last Contact column keeps updating, I know there is communication, but I don't know why the Last Status Repors will not update. I already ran the Windows Update repair tool.

What else can be done to fix this?

WSUS sync failing - system.outofmemoryexception

Trying to synchronize with upstream WSUS.  It keeps failing with the following message:

OutOfMemoryException: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown

I increasing the custom paging file size first and this did not work.  Also tried having the System manage the paging file size, no luck there either.

System consists of Windows Server 2012 R2, WSUS role, WID, and other WSUS requirements.

Any thoughts as to how I can resolve this?

WSUS 3.0 pushing Silverlight install?

I have windows 2k8R2 servers that have MS Silverlight 5.1 installed. On my 2k8R2 WSUS server I have declined all Silverlight updates except for the ones labeled "Security". However I have servers that are installing Silverlight anyway. I cannot tell which KB it is that is installing it as when I look at the recently installed updates on my servers it only shows "Silverlight 5.1".

Is it possible for WSUS to install/push software life that? I do not have SCCM, so I don't believe I should have that capability.

Thank you.

"0xc1800118" error when installing Windows 10 Version 1607 by using WSUS

Hi,

We are currently running Windows 10 Pro version 1511 (Build 10586.633) machines and WSUS (6.3.9600.18228) on Server 2012R2. All the Windows 10 machines are getting "0xc1800118" error.

I have referred to the following articles to fix the issue:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/3159706

https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/3194588

The error message I receive is (Setuperror.log):

2016-10-26 13:21:10, Error                 MOUPG  RecoverCrypto: File is encrypted, but no key was provided.
2016-10-26 13:21:10, Error                 MOUPG  CDlpActionRecoverCrypto::DoCrypto(1713): Result = 0xC1800118

I can confirm that the following are installed on Server 2012 R2. KB3094113 & KB3159706 have installed.

KB3159706Success28/05/2016
KB3094113Success2/04/2016

When I follow instruction of the Article KB:3194588, I could not get the WSUS state and it appears to be Invalid Column names, using following query:

select TotalResults = Count(*) from tbFile

where (IsEncrypted = 1 and DecryptionKey is NULL) or (FileName like '%14393%.esd' and IsEncrypted = 0)

The error message I receive is:

Msg 207, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
Invalid column name 'IsEncrypted'.
Msg 207, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
Invalid column name 'DecryptionKey'.
Msg 207, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
Invalid column name 'IsEncrypted'.

Could you please assist?

Clients Not Updating - Browsing WSUS Site Yields Forbidden Error

We have a WSUS server and one downstream server.  The WSUS server is working perfectly.  The downstream is not.  None of the clients are updating and if you browse the WSUS server in IE it throws a forbidden error as seen below.

I took a snapshot, uninstalled WSUS and reinstalled it without WSUS or anything and i am getting the same error.  I have since reverted to my snapshot and am back where i started.  I have no clue what is going wrong.  I have reviewed the article regarding WSUS breaking after the windows update in may and have implemented those settings on both servers.

Windows 10(kb3140768 ) patches wrongly mapped to Windows 7 on wsus server

HI Team

We are using Wsus server to push windows update to Client systemwe are using multiple OS system like win-7,8.1,10. We found windows 10 patch(kb3140768) even not approved patches showing in windows 7 system. When we check the status of windows 7 PC, its showing completed - 99%, needed-1%.

Needed Patches- cumulative update for windows 10 version 1511 x64-based systems (KB3140768)

How we can solve this issue???

Windows 10 Update no longer working.

Hello,

in our company we have arround 40 Windows 10 PCs by now. Four of them are "Beta-Testers" for recently released Updates.
(We are releasing (Non-Security-)Updates for every User with about 2-3 weeks delay, depending on the Admins Mood)

The last "Test-Release" made the Windows-Update Service stop working on all 4 Test-Devices. They are still connecting to WSUS (according to "Last Contact") - but they never send an updated Status Report.

Also, invoking "Search for Update" manually on these devices always "finds" new Updates, but gets stuck with "0% Downloading".

The Event Log shows a big bunch of services beeing "stopped" right after system-startup.

(Also "Windows Update Service", "Background Transfer Service", and the like)

The Option "Search online for Updates" is no longer available (on these clients)

Is there any Update "known", causing this problem? If yes, which KB is it, and how to get the "Test-Clients" back on track?

Question with "Download express installation files" option.

Hi

If I enable this option in WSUS, what happens to all the files that were previously downloaded? Do they stay as is, or does everything get re-downloaded again in the express files format?

Thanks,

DM

Cannot connect to 'ServerName'. SQL server may not be running on the server.

Hello all,

I can't seem to connect to my WSUS server anymore through the MMC. When I try, I get the following error message:

Cannot connect to 'ServerName'. SQL server may not be running on the server.

I don't know what caused this problem, it just stopped working one day. I'm not sure if it is related or not, but I'm getting the following error message in the application event log.

Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. [CLIENT: <named pipe>]

Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with SQL. When I installed WSUS over a year ago, I chose all defaults, so I believe that the express version of SQL is installed. Any help that you could give me would be great.

Thanks,

Joe

Trouble with my first WSUS-Client on Windows Server 2016 (No Format Information found)

Hi,
I hope you can help me. We have a really stange behaviour and I don't know where I have to search...

But first I have to say:
It was so easy to search for an wsus error looking into C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log but now with Windows Server 2016 *bangging my head on the table* ... it is so frustrating to analyze the problem. And still after searching for hours... I still don't have a serious error message.

So back to my problem:
We have around 250 WSUS Clients (all of them are servers: 2008,2008R2,2012,2012R2) and now our first WSUS - Client with Windows Server 2016
The WSUS Server is running fine and all clients can sync (WSUS is running on Port 8531 with SSL) with it, but not our new "Windows Server 2016" WSUS-Client.

In "Products" Windows Server 2016 is selected.
Classification: All except Drivers

With wireshark I have made a trace and I can see, that the connection to the WSUS - Server is established and they can communicate.
In our WSUS - Console I can also find an entry for the server and the last status report and last contact is up2date.

But when I switch to the Windows Server 2016 and go to (Windows + i) > Update & security > Windows Update
It always say: "Downloading updates 0%" or "Download updates 100%" but nothing else happens. It seems like the update stuck.

Can you find my fault?

Getting past WSUS Cleanup Wizard time out, removing unnecessary updates.

Standard problem with WSUS Cleanup Wizard timing out without removing any unnecessary updates. SBS2K8. WSUS 3. 6000+ unnecessary updates awaiting approval. Huge database. Unresponsive SQL server. Lot of people have this problem:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/9724778f-c1a0-4d24-82e4-8b2d054257d6/wsus-hangs-on-cleanup-wizard-for-unused-updates-then-disconnects-from-console?forum=winserverwsus

Drives are regularly defragged in the background. Not gonna shut down the server and have down time just to fix this.

Tried the reindexing script from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd939795(WS.10).aspx
, (don't copy the command line, it has weird characters in it, just type it in manually.) and it completes but it didn't improve anything.

Found this:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and it also times out.

Found this comment:
For anyone who is getting Timeout Expired with obsolete updates. I have a solution! Use server name : "
\\.\pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\sql\query
" to connect with SQL managment studio. Once connected manually run "
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup
". This will return a list of obsolete ID's. For each one run "
exec spDeleteUpdate @localUpdateID=000000
", where 000000 is the ID. For myself I found the first ID in the list took a full 37 minutes to delete and then after that I could run the cleanup through the GUI as per usual.

Found that you actually need to do:
USE SUSDB
GO
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup

And to connect in the first place, I had to hit Options, and select named pipe from the middle pull down.

First delete took 6 minutes and memory has spiked up to almost 15GB in use out of 16GB physical. But the WSUS console (Update Services) still shows the same number of old updates. Failure? I don't think so: I'm running the cleanup wizard again and so far it isn't timing out... It has run over night, and has made some progress; the bar has moved perhaps 5%.

So... My take is that the SQL server causes this problem when there is to much data, because the indexes are poorly designed (not because the indexes need to be re-indexed) causing the first query to time out, which causes the cleanup to fail. Once you get past that first deletion, and have everything loaded into memory, the cleanup tool can stay connected long enough to delete each unneeded update.

Next step will be to find a command line method, such as:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and put it into the task scheduler like Microsoft should have done at the beginning to keep this from getting out of hand.

P.S. Lawrence Garvin, please do NOT reply to this; I have no need of your arrogance.

ERROR: DownloadContentFiles() failed with hr=0x80072eff

Hi

I just ran into the same issue "ERROR: DownloadContentFiles() failed with hr=0x80072eff"

distmgr.log also shows error: "Failed to generate hash of package"

I've checked the permissions etc and they all seem fine (I've even tried tried giving Everyone full control under sharing and security, but no joy )

I've googled the error and it seems like this has happened to quite a few but no real resolutions or causes can be seen... any pointers???

Cheers

Connection Error WSUS Console

Hi,

When opening the WSUS console i now get the following error -

An Error occurred trying to connect the WSUS server. This error can happen for a number of reasons. Check connectivity with the server. Please contact your network administrator if the problem persists.

In the event logs we have the event id: 7053. I can supply the whole event if needed.

Does anyone know how i might be able to resolve this?

Thanks.
