We are experiencing a weird issue with our WSUS setup on an air gap network. Windows 10 clients are able to pull updates but Server 2016 clients are not able to download updates. A wireshark capture determined that the servers were trying to download the express installation files from WSUS which is not enabled on the WSUS server. When enabling the express installation files, Server 2016 clients were able to download the updates but the Windows 10 clients were stuck at downloading updates 0% without erroring out. When disabling the express installation files, Windows 10 clients continued to download and install updates successfully, but Server 2016 clients errored out downloading updates because they were still trying to download express installation files.
We are running our WSUS on a VM that is connected to the internet and then exporting it to a OVF file. From there, we transfer it to the air gap network. We still have not determined how to force Windows to use or not use the express installation files. Preferably, we want to make it so that express installation files are not used to keep the updates consistent.
