Each month when patch Tuesday rolls around, we use WSUS to approve and install the Windows Server/Windows 10 Cumulative Updates for that month, as well as the .NET Framework, Servicing Stack and Adobe Flash updates (if available that month). We also allow WSUS to publish SQL Server Cumulative Updates when they come out. As long as i have been using WSUS to patch our Windows/SQL Server servers and clients, the Windows and SQL Server updates will not install together.
1. If we only have Windows updates, the Windows updates install in one pass/restart.
2. If we only have SQL Server updates, the SQL Server update installs in one pass/restart.
3. If we have both Windows & SQL Server updates, only the Windows updates install. After the server restarts, the server will show that it still needs a SQL Server update. If i want the SQL Server update installed at the same time, i have to manually connect to each computer that needs it, and install it manually (and restart the server manually).
Is this the expected behavior? Is there an option that allows both to be installed at the same time and not require two passes/restarts? If two are needed, is there a way for us to have the SQL update also install automatically? Let's say i have the updates scheduled for Wednesday at 5pm and i have approved a Windows Server CU and a SQL Server CU. Could the Windows CU install at 5pm, force a restart, then install the SQL Server CU and restart a second time? If not, what options would you suggest for automating the install of both updates in one evening/pass?
