Why can't I install WSUS updates on my Essentials server?

I have a simple setup. I have a Windows 2012 R2 Essentials server (Server A) which has the WSUS role enabled. It is syncing the updates, and when I approve them, the client machines are able to install them. However, on the Essentials server itself, I find no way to install updates. Every day the health report says that there are "missing updates" on the Essentials server and I see that also in the WSUS admin tool. But nowhere do I get a prompt to install updates. Note that I only just recently migrated from SBS 2008, so not entirely familiar with 2012 R2 Essentials. I looked all over the forums and other online resources, and have not found anything that has helped to resolve this issue. Note that the same is true for the only other server on the network, a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (Server B). Both Server A and Server B are virtual machines running on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard host.  Not sure if that makes a difference with this issue.  But all machines on the domain are getting updates and able to install them.  Note that all the client machines are Windows 7 SP1.  Except for these two servers.  Any clues on how to resolve this would be much appreciated.
