I am trying to decrypt how WSUS works, so it makes a virtual directory in IIS and will put it under 8530 port if you tell it to. At the beginning of the setup it asks where you would like to place the WSUS directory, and I am finding this is DIFFERENT than what is in the virtual directory that points to C:\Program Files\Update Services\Selfupdate. What I am trying to do is make all my updates go to an external drive and synchronize automatically so when I go to a client site I can take the external drive with me and make my laptop the "WSUS" server temporarily so I can update their machines. I work with a lot of ag clients and their DSL connections are usually very slow.
