Exporting metadata issue

Currently we are trying to do a metadata export from a down stream WSUS.  We stop the three services, BITS, Automatic updates, and Update services.  Once the services are stopped i open CMD and CD to C:/program files/udpate services/tools and execute the following wsusutil.exe export "c:\export.cab" "c:\export.log"  It goes through about a hour long process with both files being created.  The problem is the .cab file has 0KB worth of data.  Any known issues that would cause this problem.  The event logs look clear with no other known issues.

I forgot to mention that we are using the windows internal Database.

Installing 2 roles on 1 server

I created a WSUS server with Windows Server 2008 R2 at work today so I don't have to go through every computer to do updates. The company has about 50 computers. I was also debating whether or not if I should add Windows Deployment role on the server. I'm still an entry level Desktop Support. What is your take on this project? Any advice for me?

Error Connecting to WSUS Server

We have a 2008 R2 server that also serves as our WSUS server. When I open WSUS, it comes up with the following message:

Error: Connection Error

An error occured trying to conect the WSUS server. This error can happen for a number of reasons. Check connectivity with the server.

I copied the error to the clipboard and have posted it below. I've tried rebooting but that didn't fix it. Other ideas?

----------------------------------------------------------

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.

Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.

The WSUS administration console has encountered an unexpected error. This may be a transient error; try restarting the administration console. If this error persists,

Try removing the persisted preferences for the console by deleting the wsus file under %appdata%\Microsoft\MMC\.

Creation of Disconnected WSUS

Hello,

I have been searching for an answer to the following question.

Do I have to create all the sub grouping from my Export wsus network server in my import wsus server?

Example

> XP_Pro

> XP_pro_SP3

> Win_7

> Server_2008_R2

> Server_2008

>>Server_2008_x64

>>Server_2008

>>Server_2008_Database

>Server_2003

>>Server_2003_x64

>>Server_2003_Database

I have imported my Meta Data and the content folder, but the folders created from the Export server do not exists on the import WSUS server. Suggestions?

WSUS - Downloading updates - Computer Slowness

Hi Everyone

I have recently implemented WSUS and i have found that the computers run at a slow rate when they download new updates from the WSUS Server. I have established this theory when a pattern was emerging with a system process which runs when downloads are being downloaded. I have temporarily put a group policy in place to disable the automatic updates service in xp and the performance on the client computers has improved and running at the expected level. In other words, i have taken WSUS out of play until i can find a way round this. The slowness is affecting all computers, and is not dependent on their specifications.

I am having problems with the interval in which the computers check in and download updates. You can set an interval between 1 and 22 hours in the group policy. However this isn't consistent as if a computer is switched off during this time and then powered on, the client computer will check for updates and download any new ones available.

It would be ideal to be able to configure a time for downloading updates and in which case, i could set the updates to download out of hours at a specific time, set the group policy to install updates a few hours after the download and use power management server software (which we have and are using) to power down the computers later in the evening. I have set a policy to remove the shutdown options, and therefore the users can only log off.

Does anyone know a way that i can set a time for download, or a better method of managing this problem?

I am aware that their is software out there which enhances WSUS, but if anyone is aware of how i can add a download time, that would be great.

Kind regards

Matthew

WSUS admin console does not open after Data base moved to remote SQL 2008 R2 DB

I have wsus3 with sp2. it was running with local database ( SQL Express) and I migrated to 2008 R2 DB which is remote server. I was trying to open the WSUS admin console and it say:-

(Note: I have followed the below link to move the DB :http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc708558%28WS.10%29.aspx )

Backup of WSUS without NTBackup

So, I've searched for this and I keep coming back with how to do this with NTBackup utility, however; our connected WSUS server must be upgraded to Windows 2008 R2, per a customer mandate from Windows 2003 R2 x64.

Our offline server is already using 2008 R2 and we used the NTBackup Utility and NTRestore to move the connected WSUS DB and updates to the offline one, and it's worked perfectly after getting all the glitches ironed out that are offline WSUS.

My question is, with 2K8R2 not having NTBackup, what is a good way to achieve what works flawlessly? Windows Server backup doesn't look like it will provide us what we're trying to do, and while we do have Symantec NetBackup, I'm not sure if that would work either, since it stores the backups on the server and the clients connect to the server to get a restore.

I'm kind of lost as to what to do and proceed because without the ability to go from online to offline, I don't think this is going to work.

Does anyone have any suggestions how to achieve what I'm looking to do with using Windows 2008 R2 on both online and offline?

WSUS does not synchronize from Microsoft Update

Hi,

I installed WSUS Server (W2003 R2 Std - full patched)
Same install as I always do without any problems
If I try sync WSUS Server with Microsoft Update than sync failed with error:

Hi, in our WSUS environment i'm getting a lot of Warnings in the SoftwareDistribution logfile with ErrorCode FileLocationChanged (two errors):

2013-08-02 06:37:35.808 UTCWarningw3wp.92LoggedArgumentException..ctorArgument exceptioninvalid header

Does anyone know if this is harmfull? How can i resolve this issue?

Environment specs: SCCM 2012 SP1, 7 active SUP's that share 1 WSUS (SQL)database.

Computers not appearing in replacement new WSUS installation (after old WSUS server failed)

We had a WSUS (I believe 3.0) running on a 2003 Server for several years. Server failed due to hard disk errors, so we got a new 2012 server and brought it up on our domain (2008R2); had to remove from domain once and re-add to resolve "trust relationship" error messages, but now server shows in AD just fine. Installed WSUS as a role on the server, it synchronized, and downloaded thousands of updates. Our clients have been doing WSUS for several years now, back from before we even had AD, so they are set up with gpedit on local machine and with Windows Update paramters pointing to the WSUS server name. (Replacement WSUS server has same name and IP number that old one had.) NONE of the few hundred computers display in WSUS, though they show just fine in AD on the domain controller. Computers had been reporting to WSUS as being in one of three groups, so we manually added/defined these groups in WSUS. Refreshed display and computers (some XP, some Win7) still did not show. Tried to set up a GPO for the updates for the most populated of the three groups, as in Adrian Costea's blog article "Configure WSUS to deploy updates using Group Policy" (we have already done GPO for password policies on our domain, so we have used GPO setup before), but still to no avail. We don't have the luxury of trying to recover settings, etc., from the old server because it failed, so we have to start fresh. Is there something I can do from the server to make the workstations visible?

WSUS Server Cleanup Wizard not working proberly

Hi

I have this problem with the WSUS Server Cleanup Wizard, that it can't delete some of the computers (4 pcs) that we have that haven't contacted the for more than 30 days.

If I use the CleanStale utility, it can't detect and move the 4 pc's:

CleanStaleComputers.exe /days:30 /delete:no /prompt:no

If I alter the day number to 20, it finds a lot of other pc's and move em to Stale Group (but not the 4 above).

I can manually delete the pc's, but in a couple of weeks, I have the same problem with some of the pc's.

Can the database somehow be corrupted ?

Best Regards

Peter
