Needed count wrong for Windows 8.1

Hi,

I'm running WSUS on Windows Server 2012 R2 and it basically works the way I want, with one exception: For the Windows 8.1 clients (and only them) the needed count is always much higher than for the other clients. I have verified that the updates actually are installed on the client, and they are. But most of them are still listed as needed in WSUS.

This has been going on ever since we started to get Windows 8.1 clients in our network, at which time WSUS was running on Windows Server 2012 and showed the Windows 8.1 clients with their real version number (6.3). The WSUS server was then upgraded in place to Windows Server 2012 R2. Could this be the problem?

Regards,
Jan Boström

It appears that on 8/1/14 Windows update agent 7.6.7600.320 was installed on the servers that will no longer update. Do you have any recommendations on how to fix this as I can not update these servers  I could not send the entire log

Event ID 10032 The server is failing to download some updates

We have a SCCM 2012 SP1 hierarchy with two Software Update Points. On both SUP's we get exactly every 6 hours an error in the Application Log in Event Viewer: Event ID 10032 The server is failing to download some updates.

There are a few threads on this forum with the same error message but we don't get any other error messages. It's also not clear which updates are failing. All SCCM logs and Status Messages seems fine, it looks like a WSUS issue.

When I run manually 'wsusutil checkhealth' the same error message immediately appears in the Application Log in Event Viewer.

Is it possible to enable debug logging on the WSUS Role to get more information?

In another thread someone mentions to completely remove the SUP and WSUS roles and start over but that's a little too drastic for our environment.

Any help would be appreciated, I also posted this thread in the SCCM 2012 forum.

Where is Silverlight in WSUS?

All versions of Silverlight are expired/declined on our WSUS servers. When can we expect the replacements?  We use the WSUS bits to push out Silverlight via SCCM and that is no longer possible.

Thanks,
Russell

Hi everyone,
I have two isolated networks(Two different domains) one in the internal network not connected to outside world and
the other one external connected to outside world.

I want to  come up with 2 WSUS servers
One WSUS server connected to the internet domain and other WSUS server connected to internal domain.

Is it possible to export update metadata from internet WSUS server and import it in internal WSUS server(But Both Domains are Different). Please guide me how to configure WSUS server.

hi

I am installing WSUS 3.0 SP2 on windows server 2008 R2,and my network is not connected to outside world.
When trying  to install wsus i am getting error IIS or Additional IIS Role services must be installed.

On Server Roles page, i have selected Application Server and Web Server (IIS).

For IIS roles i have selected ASP.NET, Windows Authentication, Dynamic Content Compression, and IIS 6 Management Compatibility.
Am i missing anything else.

KB972493 reports needed unnecessarily

I've seen some other threads along similar problem but still can't work out where I'm going wrong.
Our situation: I've created a 'WSUS' computer group and only approved KB972493 for install on that group which the WSUS server itself is in. I've recently installed Windows Server 2008 R2 on another server which is not in the 'WSUS' computer group and does not have the WSUS role installed (and don't want it) yet WSUS reports KB972493 is required. The server reports otherwise and reports no updates are required.
Any suggestions welcome.

Hi everyone
I have installed WSUS 3.0 SP2 on win 2008 R2,

1. which is the best way to deploy updates,
Shud i go with GPO or from WSUS console

2. For example, i have downloaded security updates for windows server 2008R2,
and i want to deploy on few servers or lets say one OU or on one server.
How should i approach?

In the Options Tab -
Automatic Approvals-i have deleted default rule
Computers Tab-i have checked box-Use Group Policy or registry setting

In the security updates, i can see updates
do i need to approve the update i need to install(i only need to deploy few not all)
Please guide me because i am just cautious my small mistake can force all the updates on servers or client computers

Windows 2012 R2 WSUS & Bits 5.0 - How to limit maximum bandwidth for clients?

$

Hi,

I tried to limit maximum bandwidth with Group Policy:

Network/Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
Limit the maximum network bandwidth for BITS background transfers

But it seems that this settings is ignored. When it does, I have to stop "Word Wide Web Publishing Service". Therefore I think that it is not downloaded by BITS, because I can stop BITS, but download continue.

Is this normal? Do you have any idea, how to set it?

Thank you in advance.

Portable WSUS Solution

Hi All,

Currently my company and I are looking into designing a portable WSUS solution.  Our goal is to have a computer or laptop installed with Windows Server 2008, the latest WSUS Server component, not joined to any domain, and bring it to our clients to deploy updates instead of updating individual computers and servers.

The reason for this is to, for one, spare their internet connection.  Since we aren't always present at these clients, it could be weeks or months before we update computers, which would leave us with a large amount to download per computer.

Secondly, we are trying to avoid putting WSUS on their servers, some of them aging and maxed out as far as resources.

If there's any other offline update method that's out there, I'm open to suggestions.

Any help is appreciated.  I can't seem to find anything online or any best practices from Microsoft.

Thanks in advance.

WSUS Administrators group and CleanUp error

Hi,

I try to do automatic cleanup of WSUS parent and downstream servers.

My script run fine with my account (domain admin) but I want to run the script with low rights.

So, I created a local account on each server, member of WSUS Administrators local group.

This works fine for Windows 2008 (R2) downstream servers but for 2012 Servers, i get an error: acces denied when performing cleanup.

After reviewing WSUS logs, it seems that it's impossible to stop WSUS Service with this account accros WSUS Remoting API.

Why WSUS administrators group isn't sufficient for 2012 R2 servers ?

Thanks.

Clients Unable to Download Windows Update via WSUS (Error 80072EFD)

I'm having problems checking/downloading Windows Updates via WSUS. Every time I check for updates, it returns error 80072EFD. I've tried all the recommended steps (disabling anti-virus etc) and fixes but it's not effective and the same error persists. The last successful communication and download was almost two weeks ago, 6/2/2014.

Can someone help me regarding this?

Getting past WSUS Cleanup Wizard time out, removing unnecessary updates.

Standard problem with WSUS Cleanup Wizard timing out without removing any unnecessary updates. SBS2K8. WSUS 3. 6000+ unnecessary updates awaiting approval. Huge database. Unresponsive SQL server. Lot of people have this problem:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/9724778f-c1a0-4d24-82e4-8b2d054257d6/wsus-hangs-on-cleanup-wizard-for-unused-updates-then-disconnects-from-console?forum=winserverwsus

Drives are regularly defragged in the background. Not gonna shut down the server and have down time just to fix this.

Tried the reindexing script from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd939795(WS.10).aspx
, (don't copy the command line, it has weird characters in it, just type it in manually.) and it completes but it didn't improve anything.

Found this:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and it also times out.

Found this comment:
For anyone who is getting Timeout Expired with obsolete updates. I have a solution! Use server name : "
\\.\pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\sql\query
" to connect with SQL managment studio. Once connected manually run "
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup
". This will return a list of obsolete ID's. For each one run "
exec spDeleteUpdate @localUpdateID=000000
", where 000000 is the ID. For myself I found the first ID in the list took a full 37 minutes to delete and then after that I could run the cleanup through the GUI as per usual.

by jjdacl on Apr 23 at 12:55 PM

Found that you actually need to do:
USE SUSDB
GO
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup

And to connect in the first place, I had to hit Options, and select named pipe from the middle pull down.

First delete took 6 minutes and memory has spiked up to almost 15GB in use out of 16GB physical. But the WSUS console (Update Services) still shows the same number of old updates. Failure? I don't think so: I'm running the cleanup wizard again and so far it isn't timing out... It has run over night, and has made some progress; the bar has moved perhaps 5%.

So... My take is that the SQL server causes this problem when there is to much data, because the indexes are poorly designed (not because the indexes need to be re-indexed) causing the first query to time out, which causes the cleanup to fail. Once you get past that first deletion, and have everything loaded into memory, the cleanup tool can stay connected long enough to delete each unneeded update.

Next step will be to find a command line method, such as:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and put it into the task scheduler like Microsoft should have done at the beginning to keep this from getting out of hand.

P.S. Lawrence Garvin, please do NOT reply to this; I have no need of your arrogance.

Hi Experts,

I have a WSUS server installed on network on which MSE definition updates are installed, but the MSE on the client computer is not getting updates from it.

When I click the update button it gives me error "Virus and spyware definitions couldn't be updated".

The error code i am getting is 0x80244018. The definition updates couldn't be installed please try again later.

I also have TMG on my network as a default gateway, I want to update MSE from WSUS not from microsoft update.

Do I have to change rules....??? or any suggesstions that how MSE can be automatically updated from WSUS, the WSUS setting is saved into a GROUP Policy and applied....

Please advice......

WSUS server needs to be added to active directory domain.

Hi,

Actually we have installed WSUS server prior to deploying active directory domain in our infrastructure. Now after installing AD in our infrastructure we want same WSUS server to be member of active directory domain. Is it possible to add the WSUS server now to AD. Is there any impact and if yes then how can I counter the same.

As the WSUS server is functional in our infrastructure we don't want that any modification in its current state results in unwanted results and loss of services.

Thanks
