Installing Updates in WSUS

Hi!

We have 3 new servers that need to be downloaded with the latest windows updates. We are using WSUS to install windows updates. I've create a new group in WSUS server (HR) and added the 3 new servers to install updates. When I click Search, Updates then entered the KB I want to install then approve only in the group, It says, "Removing approval of Cumulative Security update from all Computers" then "Approving Cumulative Update for Windows Server for installation to HR"

Now, my question is, when its says 'Removing approval..." does this mean that the update will be removed from the old computers and install it only in the HR group?

I'm really confused! Please help!!!

Thank you in advance for your help!

WSUS clients keep reappearing in WSUS

Hi,

I have a WSUS server (the only one in the network) ver.3.2.7600.226 running on Server 2008 Standard.

I have set up a group policy which has been pushed out to all client machines and they are all reporting back. Some are with updates to install, a few updates failed (which we trouble shoot at source) and some lovely green ticks meaning everything is up to date. IIS is set up and the relevant ports are open and communicating.

However, I have a list of old machine in an OU in active directory where the new group policy is not linked to. There machinesdon't exist anymore (most are just hard drives in a draw!). There is no way they can be contacting WSUS so I delete them from WSUS server (not from Active directory). I carry on happily for about 30 minutes then they pop back. What do you think is happening?

I have admin rights on the server, I've emptied/deleted the WSUS cache files, restarted the WSUS server services and reset IIS. My last thought is that there is some sort of MOF file that is bringing the machines back. They only ones I can find are IIS related. This system was set up before my time here as I'm trying to be a mind reader at well!

Any help gratefully recieved.

All the best,

Simon

Configure updates Notify/Notify but only allow Local Admins to install

We are running WSUS 3.2.  I am trying to configure several clients so that when someone with Local Admin logs on they are notified that updates are available, they can choose which ones to download and then are notified when they are downloaded and ready to install.  I do not want non-admins to be able to install updates.  I have tried several combinations but so far Notify/Notify only works when a domain admin logs on to the device.

Can someone suggest the settings that will allow this, or is it not possible?  I'm pretty sure this worked in the past, so if it did work before and doesn't work now, I'm not sure what changed.

Thanks for any assistance.

WSUS server won't install

I have a brand new virtual machine running Windows 2012. After loading all of the Microsoft updates the next thing I do is try to get WSUS running. The operative word being "try" because when I'm done going through the installation steps I get the error message "The request to add or remove features on the specified server failed. The operation cannot be completed because the server that you specified requires a restart." Of course there is no indication as to which server needs to be restarted so I manually try to restart the ones that I know about WSUS Server (Disabled), Windows Certificate Server (Manual), and Windows Internal Database (Manual). Then I try to reboot the server and all of the services are gone as if I never tried to install WSUS.

Does anyone know why WSUS won't install on a clean machine?

Thanks

Windows 10 KB push to domain clients

Domain Server 2012R2

Windows 8.1 Pro

Windows 7 Pro

With the release date of July 29th, I have gone through the literature and see thatKB3035583 is required to reserve and schedule the clients system updates. Since I run WSUS to deliver the updates, how do I make sure I retrieve it and apply it to my Win7 & Win8.1 clients. I am not running enterprise version of the client OS's.

Thanks

How to handle system's restart postpone in a programmatic way.

Hi,

In some cases it's require to restart system after installing Windows updates and for that system prompt for restart option like "Restart now", or "Postpone by some minutes" etc.

I am aware with the manual changes within GPO using gpeditor and disable restart etc. but I would like to control system's restart postpone mechanism by some coding way.
It will easy to implement if there are some system APIs which can offer such control.

Please let me know if someone has hints on same.

OS environment:
Windows 2000 and later

Thanks in advance!

Error ID 12072 The WSUS content directory is not accessible.

Hi,

I receive the following error log.

The WSUS content directory is not accessible.
System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.
at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse()
at Microsoft.UpdateServices.Internal.HealthMonitoring.HmtWebServices.CheckContentDirWebAccess(EventLoggingType type, HealthEventLogger logger)

Also WSUS server doesn't install any approved update that "Installed/Not Applicable Percentage"column is still 0% and message says,

"This update supersedes another update. Before you decline any superseded update, we recommend that you verify it is no longer needed by any computer. To do so, approve the superseding update first."

Does this have anything to do with error 12072?

Could you please give me some advise?

Thanks,

autoupdating computer groups

Hello,

Windows Server 2008R2; WSUS 3.0 SP2; Clients: Windows 7 64-bit

I've started up an upstream WSUS server along with multiple replica wsus servers and I have a couple of questions. On each server, I have enabled client side targetting. Originally they got dumped into the unassigned computer group during the testing. After updating the GP, the computers remained in unassigned computer group. It doesn't seem like an issue of the group policy because after deleting all the computer items, they went  into their correct groups after wsus reconnected to them. Is there a way to WSUS to recognize changes made to the GP?

Secondly, since I have multiple replica servers, is there a way to get the computer groups to sync? Each replica server displays a different number of computer that it sees. SiteA has 300 computers show; SiteB has 200 computers shown; SiteC has 100 computers shown?

Any insight is appreciated,

Arnold

Windows update intermittently downloads on computers throughout a domain

$

What I mean by this is, we deploy windows 7 through an image we have created. We update this image using a Powershell script which downloads Windows updates from our WSUS. We then deploy this image to a new computer.

Theoretically the new computers should be up-to-date with Windows Updates. The problem is, we drop the computers into different OU groups. They then pick up the GPO which links to our WSUS and should see that it's up-to-date. Some computers are fine and no update installs. But some computers start pulling updates from the WSUS and start installing. Which obviously takes a lot of time. These could differ from 70 updates to 170.

Why would one computer not need updates but then another computer in another OU group start installing updates when both of them link to the same WSUS and both are from the same WIM file?

It's a strange one and I can't see any solution online.

Any advice you can give me? Anything I can check. I have permissions to the WSUS but I don't really know what I'm looking at.

Fully automating WSUS

Greetings,

First time setting up WSUS on Server 2012 R2. Configured it to download what I wanted. Set up the auto approve.

Set up a group policy targeted to the whole domain.

New machines installed into the domain and nothing happens.

What's missing? Some articles Ive seen talk about running wuauctl /detectnow on every machine. That sounds ridiculous -  cant I just configure something in group policy so that the client starts receiving updates?

How can I automate this so that when any new machine joins the domain, it picks up the group policy and eventually gets all he updates from WSUS without touching the clients?

Thanks

Hi

I am getting the above error appearing in my WSUSCtrol.log. I wondered if anyone had come across this?

I am using CM2012 R2 SP1 with WSUS 3 SP2 and WSUS-KB2720211-x64 & WSUS-KB2734608-x64 patches.  WSUS is on a separate box and SQL is on another box. The WSUS console is installed with the aforementioned patches on the CM2012 primary site.

This error reappears approx every hour.

Thanks

WSUS 3.0 Upgrade from SP1 to SP2 - Computers now cannot check for updates

$

Good morning,

--- Environment

Servers: Windows Server 2008r2 64bit SP1

Workstations: Windows 7 Professional 64bit SP1

--- Problem

We have our own WSUS server that we deploy microsoft updates to our workstations.  There was a panic about vulnerabilities on our network and I was instructed by my boss to bulk approve any needed updates in WSUS.  Several updates have installed on the workstations and on the servers.  KB972493 installed on the WSUS server and apparently upgraded WSUS from SP1 to SP2. Now none of my workstations or servers can check for updates and they fail with error 800B0001.  This includes the WSUS server itself, it can't even check for updates.

--- Attempted resolutions

I have tried running the update readiness tool on both WSUS and on a workstation, rebooted both, no fix.

How to find WSUS server in unknown environment?

I've got what I consider to be an odd task facing me.  In an server environment where I have no knowledge of the infrastructure, I need to find out where the WSUS server is, and how it's configured.  I can't ask questions of those who are in charge of the environment and I need to identify the WSUS environment ASAP.  I've tried running GPresult and I'm getting access denied for most of the GPResult data even though I'm a domain admin in the environment.

I need to find where the console is installed and whether I have access to it.

WSUS keeps creating a duplicate server name

I am having a issue when I make a change to a group member or move a user to a different group and refresh.. I get a duplicate server name. This can happen repeatedly. The duplicates are identical to the main server and are even named the same.

Any idea why this is happening and how to resolve?

BITS job failed to download updates, updates fail with error 80244019

I am having problems with clients installing MS updates. From looking at the windowsupdate.log on the client the problem appears to be related to BITS. I do not have an in depth knowledge of BITS or how it works or what could cause it to fail. If this is the wrong place to post these please point me to the correct place.

This is from the windowsupdate.log file

Your WSUS server currently shows that no computers are registered to receive updates

I just recently installed Windows Server R2 Std and installed WSUS, this will be replacing my existing Windows 2003 Server configured for WSUS.

* configured WSUS, approved updates

* applied the GPO to a test OU, checked the test server which is also Windows 2012 R2 and it changed the registry settings pointing to the new server.

In the Update Services console it still reflects that no computers are contacting the server for registrations.  I read a few blogs and it has pointed me to the update log.  I initiated a "wuauclt /detectnow"  See log below:
