Hi all. Ive been looking for a list of WSUS Version numbers. I am having a problem trying to figure out if my WSUS Servers are fully up to date with the actual patches for WSUS.  Trying to google that is a problem in and of itself, due to the terms in use (WSUS, patch, Version, etc).

Here is what I have so far. I am noticing Windows 10 clients showing up as Windows Vista Enterprise, so am hoping there is another one or two I am missing!

WSUS Database NT AUTHORITY/ANONYMOUS issue on Core 2012R2 installation

Hi All

I'm installing a new WSUS server on 2012R2 core with a remote database. I'm getting some strange issues.
If I run the following command ([FQDN] is a placeholder for our fully qualified internal domain name, both WSUS01 and MGMTSQL01 are on the same domain/subnet):

.\wsusutil.exe postinstall SQL_INSTANCE_NAME="MGMTSQL01.[FQDN]\MSSQLSERVER" CONTENT_DIR=W:\Update-Data

I get the response:

Fatal Error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid)
If I run the command like this:
.\wsusutil.exe postinstall SQL_INSTANCE_NAME="MGMTSQL01.[FQDN]" CONTENT_DIR=W:\Update-Data
..without the instance name, I get:
fatal error: login failed for user 'nt authority\anonymous logon'.

Here's the connection screen on the MGMTSQL01 server: http://imgur.com/UNphyEB
So from that I can gather that it was set up with no instance name and that the second command above should work! Any idea how I can force it to use specific credentials?

Windows 10 Pro PC's ignoring WSUS

$

I am running Windows Server 2012R2 Std with Update Services version 6.3.9600.16384

Windows 10 updates have been allowed and approved in WSUS.  Windows 10 Pro PC's are listed in WSUS "computers" container. WSUS misidentifies the Windows 10 PC's OS as "Windows Vista".

Update GPO is applied to all domain PC's.

Windows 10 PC's are not responding to the WSUS server & Update-GPO.  All Windows 8/8.1/7 PC's and Windows Servers (2008R2 & 2012R2) are & have been updating properly as configured by the Update GPO.  Driver Updates are not "Automatically Approved" by WSUS & the GPO specifies that users have the right to delay updating and that users are prompted for updates when logging off, shutting down or restarting the PC.  This configuration has been in place and is still working on ALL Windows 8/8.1/7 PC's and Windows Servers (2008R2 & 2012R2).  Windows 10 PC's are completely ignoring the GPO & WSUS server.

The Windows 10 PC's update randomly - day or night.  Install drivers and every other type of update.  Users are prompted randomly to update and are not given the option to delay the update.

What gives?  Is this part of the Windows 10 forced update issue?  Are there plans to correct the issue and allow continued update management through WSUS and Group Policy...Or has Microsoft decided to deprecate these management tools? Does anyone know a work around for the Windows 10 Professional, domain joined PC's? And if those PC's are able to ignore the WSUS and GPO update policies, what other policies are they ignoring????

Downloaded update causes high CPU usage on SQL servers

On one of our domains (but curiously not the others), when Windows Server 2008R2 updates are downloaded to SQL 2008 servers it causes high CPU spiking on the servers. This spiking only stops after the install/reboot cycle for updates is complete. So between the updates being Approved in WSUS and the reboot occurring the servers are unusable at times. A google has not turned up anything obvious, has anyone got any ideas why this might be occurring?

KB2881073 not applicable?

Hi everyone

I have a question regarding KB2881073. This update is not missing according to WSUS and Microsoft Update. However, our patch management solution indicates that this update is missing and needs to be installed. I first thought it could be a false-positive but then I manually installed it without a problem. According to the KB article (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2881073?wa=wsignin1.0), the prerequisite is Office 2010 SP2, so WSUS and Microsoft Update should offer this update to all our PCs but that's not the case. Any ideas why? Is anyone else seeing this?

WSUS Caching issue

Hi,

I am experiencing an issue with WSUS that I hope someone can help with.

I currently have a GPO setup for Windows Update, option 3, download and prompt to install. Once I approve updates to these so that it caches them down ready for instalaltion, it's causing high CPU usage and spiking every hour or so.

If I move these servers out of a 'caching' group that doesn't have the updates applied then it stops happening.

I recently replaced our existing WSUS Server 2003 with a new WSUS Server 2012 and ever since then this has began happening.

Nothing on the GPO side of things has changed.

Any help gratefully received

Thanks

Getting past WSUS Cleanup Wizard time out, removing unnecessary updates.

Standard problem with WSUS Cleanup Wizard timing out without removing any unnecessary updates. SBS2K8. WSUS 3. 6000+ unnecessary updates awaiting approval. Huge database. Unresponsive SQL server. Lot of people have this problem:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/9724778f-c1a0-4d24-82e4-8b2d054257d6/wsus-hangs-on-cleanup-wizard-for-unused-updates-then-disconnects-from-console?forum=winserverwsus

Drives are regularly defragged in the background. Not gonna shut down the server and have down time just to fix this.

Tried the reindexing script from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd939795(WS.10).aspx
, (don't copy the command line, it has weird characters in it, just type it in manually.) and it completes but it didn't improve anything.

Found this:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and it also times out.

Found this comment:
For anyone who is getting Timeout Expired with obsolete updates. I have a solution! Use server name : "
\\.\pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\sql\query
" to connect with SQL managment studio. Once connected manually run "
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup
". This will return a list of obsolete ID's. For each one run "
exec spDeleteUpdate @localUpdateID=000000
", where 000000 is the ID. For myself I found the first ID in the list took a full 37 minutes to delete and then after that I could run the cleanup through the GUI as per usual.

by jjdacl on Apr 23 at 12:55 PM

Found that you actually need to do:
USE SUSDB
GO
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup

And to connect in the first place, I had to hit Options, and select named pipe from the middle pull down.

First delete took 6 minutes and memory has spiked up to almost 15GB in use out of 16GB physical. But the WSUS console (Update Services) still shows the same number of old updates. Failure? I don't think so: I'm running the cleanup wizard again and so far it isn't timing out... It has run over night, and has made some progress; the bar has moved perhaps 5%.

So... My take is that the SQL server causes this problem when there is to much data, because the indexes are poorly designed (not because the indexes need to be re-indexed) causing the first query to time out, which causes the cleanup to fail. Once you get past that first deletion, and have everything loaded into memory, the cleanup tool can stay connected long enough to delete each unneeded update.

Next step will be to find a command line method, such as:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and put it into the task scheduler like Microsoft should have done at the beginning to keep this from getting out of hand.

P.S. Lawrence Garvin, please do NOT reply to this; I have no need of your arrogance.

Windows Server 2012 fails to report status to WSUS

Our WSUS install runs on Windows server 2012, reported WSUS version is 6.2.9200.16384.  We have two virtual hosts, both running Windows Server 2012 with the Hyper-V role enabled, Windows Update Version 7.8.9200.17185.

For some reason, both of these machines fail to report to WSUS.  All other servers (all 2012) and all Windows 7 clients report correctly.

I have tried most of the basic troubleshooting steps, including verifying that the WSUS Server address is correct and that the machines in question can communicate to WSUS.  Updates are being downloaded and installed, only the status reporting is failing.

Upon inspection of the Windows Update Agent log, I found the following warnings:

2015-08-17    23:56:53:687     992    1064    Report    WARNING: Failed converting event batch to web service event: 0x8007000d
2015-08-17    23:56:53:687     992    1064    Report    WARNING: Reporter failed to upload events with hr = 8007000d.

I'm guessing these are the problem, but have no idea how to fix them.  I can post the full log if needed.  Any suggestions?

Multiple WSUS v6 (Server 2012) sharing UNC path with the content

So, I wish to consolidate my WSUS content so it can be shared between 2 (or more) WSUS v6 servers.  Historically, I've had 2-3 WSUS servers but they tend to take up a lot of HDD space with duplicate updates.  I usually have 1 for Windows 7/Vista clients (users), 1 for production 2008-R2 servers, and 1 for pre-prod/development 2008-R2 servers.  With most updates being downloaded for each WSUS server, the duplicates begin to add up quickly.  After all, most updates that are for Win7-64-bit will also work for 2008-R2...  With WSUS v6, that comes with Server 2012, it allows you to use UNC a path during setup.

I want to know if what I'm trying to do is able to be done.  (I cannot be the only one running multiple WSUS servers.)  I also want to know if this type of setup (using the UNC path) is to be used for what I'm trying to do.

WSUS client Windows server 2012 version 7.8.9200.17185 can not report his status to WSUS server version 6.3.9600.16384

Dear all,

we are experiencing trouble with one WSUS client which is running on Windows server 2012 and WUAgent is at version 7.8.9200.17185. This server was installed by fresh installation (no cloned). This server is presented at WSUS admin console but is at status:  "Not reported yet". We are not able to persuade this client to report to WSUS server.

We went through a lot of articles where similar issues was described but sofar no solution was found.

What we did already:

Remove wsus client from Admin console, restart WSUS client OS and WSUS server as well. Restart WUAUSERV on client, wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow, wuauclt /reportnow. We Reseted Windows update settings on client according article:

Article ID: 971058

We ran Solarwinds diagnostic tool for WSUS Agent but no errors found. We captured communication between client and wsus server via Wireshark as well. Devices communicate properly and all required ports are opened. We checked windowsupdatelog, applog on server and client as well.

There is a copy of windows update log from client:

2015-04-20 11:03:09:976  860 12c8 WS FATAL: OnCallFailure(hrCall, m_error) failed with hr=0x80240439

2015-04-20 11:03:09:976  860 12c8 Report WARNING: Reporter failed to upload events with hr = 80240439.

Do you anybody have idea how to solve this issue please? Any help or suggestion will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

WSUS scan catalog download is causing network trouble

I am using SCCM 2007 to patch client computers.  When Microsoft releases a new scan catalog on Patch Tuesday, I am experiencing acute high network load on my WSUS server.  My problem is that I have approx. 17,000 clients and they all seem to notice and request the new scan catalog within a single one hour window.  This causes some bandwidth contention on the network path from the clients to the WSUS server.  Is there a way available to me to distribute this load a bit so that the clients either check to see if there is a new scan catalog less frequently or perhaps make them randomize their check/download over a period greater than 1 hour?  The clients are set to scan for updates on a simple "daily" schedule with not definte time set, so I am not sure why they all notice there is a new scan file available at exactly the same time.  Is there something in WSUS I can do to spread out this load?

It is just the scan catalog  (i assume) that is causing the problem.  The patches themselves, when approved are all dowloaded from distributed DPs and there's enough of those to distribute the load.  My problem is the 17,000 clients downloading the 24Mb file from a single source all at once.

How do I fix my broken WSUS on Server 2012?

I found my Server 2012 WSUS folder had exploded to over 500 GB so I followed the instructions here to fix it. Unfortunately, the WSUSContent folder is still empty apart from a file anonymouscheckfile.txt. I have tried rebooting and left it overnight.

There's nothing obvious in the event logs. The WSUS Cleanup Wizard just gets stuck on 'Deleting unused updates...'

How do I fix it?

I suppose I could just uninstall and reinstall WSUS, but I'd like to take the opportunity to learn.

Hi,

I have a WSUS infrastructure with a Win2k12 server at the head.

Some of the non WSUS servers are getting very high CPU utilization when they check for updates. The CPU will peg for 10 minutes or more. Has anyone seen this before? Is there a client update or hotfix that I need to run?

WSUS 3.0 SP2 Installation issues on 2k8 R2 with SCCM

I am unable to use WSUS on my SCCM server running Windows 2008 R2.  I have tried installing both as a role and with the standalone and receive the same errors.

I am using the same drive for storing updates and the windows internal database (I have also tried using the SQL 2008 database that SCCM is using).  I have tried using both the default web site and having WSUS create its own website on port 8530.

WSUS immediately throws out the following errors in the log:

I have ensured that in ISAPI and CGI Restrictions all applications are allowed through.

I have tried running:

cscript WSUSInstallDirectory\setup\installselfupdateonport80.vbs.

due to best practice analyzer advising that:

Issue:

The SelfUpdate folder is missing or incorrectly installed on the default Web site or the WSUS Administration site.

Impact:

Windows Update Agents will fail to verify the required version of the installed agent, which is required to communicate with the server. This will prevent Windows Update Agents from scanning for new updates or reporting their current status to the server.

Resolution:

Create a SelfUpdate folder on the default Web site or the WSUS Administration site.

Anonymous, Basic and Windows authentication are all enabled on all parts of the WSUS website.

I'm having some issues with the SUSDB database. I am unable to connect to it issuing SQLCMD or SQL Management Studio Express. When I look at services SQL Server is not running and yet the WSUS works fine. Ideally I'd like to move the database to our SQL server, but this seems to be impossible if I cannot connect to the database.

I'm running Windows Server 2012 R2 and Update Services 6.3.9600.16384

The database is located C:\Windows\WID\Data

Any ideas?
