Language packs: Everything's at 99%

Hi,

I've got WSUS on Server 2012 R2 and 10 Server 2012 R2 servers.

WSUS is quite happily installing all the patches, but they're all stuck at 99% compliance. They're all reporting back that the UK language pack KB2839636 isn't installed.

They all have English-UK set as their default language and display language. KB2839636 doesn't appear in Windows Update.

How can I get this update installed and get 100%?

P.S. I hate language packs :)

Fresh WSUS 2012 setup does not create the Win7Sp1\wsus3setup.cab Folder/File => Clients cannot report to the WSUS Server

Hi,

maybe someone has an idea for this Problem:

A fresh Setup of a wsus 2012 (not R2) Server doesnt create the Win7Sp1\wsus3setup.cab Folder/File, so the Win7 and 2008 R2 Clients cannot Report to the wsus 2012 Server.

Here is the Log:

Does anybody knows  the reason?

Can I rebuild it manually with the wsusutil.exe tool?

Has it something to do with this error, that the Folder Win7SP1 doesnt exist or do we hav 2 different issues here?

WSUS Compliance reporting - How does it work?

Hello,

I have been searching for some time and can not seem to find the specific information I am looking for. What I would like to know is step by step, how WSUS reports compliance to the SCCM server. I currently have WSUS installed alongside SCCM and use it to push Microsoft Updates via the local intranet. What I know is that I first download the patches to the WSUS server and create the update lists and deployments. Here is where things start to become confusing for me. What process or application do the clients use to download and install the updates? Once the clients have downloaded and installed the updates how do they notify the SCCM server of their compliance? I know that software packages like Java or Firefox do so via the CCM client but MS updates appear to use some sort of built in service. The reason I need to know this information is because I frequently have hundreds of machines that will take several days to report compliance although the logs signify that the download and installation completed within the first few hours of the push. I have also run into issues where the machines will not install the new updates because an old update is stuck in the WMI repository. Resetting the repository causes the machines to install the updates and report compliance for a few hours before the status reverts back to non-compliant... If I had a deeper understanding of how SCCM reporting was receiving these compliance states I could more effectively troubleshoot the issues.

-Thank you for any help!

Windows 10 and WSUS

We have been using Windows 2008 R2 server for our WSUS server. It's been doing a good job, but when Windows 10 came along, WSUS flag it as Windows Vista. Any idea why WSUS flag Windows 10 as Vista?

Thanks,

Larry

I have a WSUS 3.0 sp2 server now. I want to migrate that to a Server 2012. I did this already...

  • Install KB2734608 on old WSUS server .
  • Install the WSUS role on new WS 12 server
  • Configure WSUS on WS 12 as replica server of old WSUS server
  • Synchronize WSUS servers  and wait for the update content transfer finished. It synchronize updates and  inherits the update approvals and computer groups created on its parent WSUS administration server.
  • Configure the WSUS on WS12 server as an upstream server and synchronize.
  • Configure GP to assign clients to new WSUS  server.
  • Turn off/remove old WSUS server (I have Not done this Yet).

The clients are showing up on the new 2012 server, but they Do Not Report.

I tried the reg hacks that I found (delete the SusClient).

Hello,

We're looking at upgrading our WSUS server from 2012 to 2012 R2. We're using version 6.2.9200 and wanted to know of any prerequisites needed before performing the upgrade. I attempted the upgrade to 2012 R2 earlier today but got stuck at the WSUS Post Installation Task In Progress screen and had to revert back to 2012. Thank you!

How to copy updates from test group to production group

I'm missing something basic here, but I have a test group that obtains the updates, and after a couple weeks, I'd like to deploy them to the general population. Is there a simple way to replicate the approved updates for the test group to the production group exactly, without including any new updates? Thank you.

Server Clients not reporting to WSUS server

Hi All,

Need some advise and help in the following issue im facing

I have setup my WSUS since June this year. All the server was reporting daily via GPO to my WSUS Server (2012 R2).

Until 3 weeks ago daily reporting stopped. I have done some reserach online and I appliedwuauclt /resetauthorization /detechnow command. I did notice that the server (2008 R2, 2012 and 2012 R2) did report to my WSUS. I continue monitor for the next few days, notice that it once again didn't report to the WSUS server the following day.

Can anyone kindly advise? I have done some iis 8.5 hardening does this affect the reporting? Does the wsus always do daily reporting or it will stop once there no longer update is avaliable? My wsus is not pointed to MS catalog website for updates. It is always been download from a wsus terminal and imported into the WSUS server to be push down to the servers.

Look forward to some advise and help in this.

Strange permission issue when installing WSUS on 2012 R2

I added the WSUS role to a completely new 2012 R2 VM. All available updates installed before adding the role. I set it to store updates locally on E:\WSUS

After the role has been added, Server Manager asks me to allow some "After Deployment Configuration tasks" to be done. I accept. However the action fails without any specific error. When I launch the WSUS Console it asks me for where to store updates. The value I added earlier is already entered (E:\WSUS). I hit OK but after a while it fails and references a log file, see further down below.

I try to reinstall the role but with same problem.

I also tried to use C:\WSUS as the location but with the same error.

I have tried to add "Full access" for "Authenticated users" on the folder with no luck.

Thank you,

Jonas

Hello Experts,

I have recently migrated WSUS upstrem server from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 & below are the steps I have followed.

  • Taken Metata backup using wsusuti.exe
  • Approvals backup using wsusmigrationexport.exe
  • Coppied all downloads on a folder.

After fresh installation of WSUS role on 2012 R2, verifyed all the settins with old server and corrected.

coppied all the Downloads in to D:\WSUS foder which was taken from old servers. (While configuring WSUS role on new server, given D:\WSUS path for downloads)

Restored metada using wsustil.exe command successfully.

But when I tried to restore approvals using wsusmigrationexport.exe, getting error

"WsusMigration failed with the below exception!"

System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.UpdateServices.Administration, Version=3.0.6000.273, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

   at Microsoft.WsusMigrationTools.WsusMigrationTool.Main(String[] args)

I tried to copy administration.dll from C:\program files but it did not help.

Also all the groups are missing from All Computers which and threre is no single old download showing in "Updates"

Please help me to resolve this provlem.

Post KB2775511 Regression Patches and rdbss.sys

Hi guys. So, I'm looking to install the Post SP1 Enterprise Hotfix Rollup KB2775511 on my 2008 R2 SP1 estate. It the installation notes it states:

  • After this update is installed, you must install update 2732673 to fix a regression issue in the Rdbss.sys file.

So, I install the roll up, reboot and then try and install KB2732673. It tell me the update is not applicable. So, i checked the versions of therdbss.sys as follows:

  • Version on our systems post SP1 it is 6.1.7601.18711 Date Modified 07/01/2015
  • Version on our systems post SP1 with KB2732673 (Windows6.1-KB2732673-v4-x64) it is 6.1.7601.22917 Date Modified 07/01/2015
  • Version on our systems post SP1 with KB2775511 it is 6.1.7601.22917 Date Modified 07/01/2015

On the KB for KB2732673 is states the driver version should be 6.1.7601.22377. Whats going on here ? I have some older systems with both installed and the version is indeed .22377. Does the rollup now include a superseded patch for KB2732673 ?

I just started to use freshly  installed WSUS server Version: 6.3.9600.16384 a few days  ago .

Number of computers configured  via group policies and pointing to the installed server (http).

Win 7  machines appeared right away . I see none of  Win 10 machines  ( Pro , Enterprise)

Do I miss upgrades for the server or WIn 10  required different configuration ? Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance

Getting past WSUS Cleanup Wizard time out, removing unnecessary updates.

Standard problem with WSUS Cleanup Wizard timing out without removing any unnecessary updates. SBS2K8. WSUS 3. 6000+ unnecessary updates awaiting approval. Huge database. Unresponsive SQL server. Lot of people have this problem:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/9724778f-c1a0-4d24-82e4-8b2d054257d6/wsus-hangs-on-cleanup-wizard-for-unused-updates-then-disconnects-from-console?forum=winserverwsus

Drives are regularly defragged in the background. Not gonna shut down the server and have down time just to fix this.

Tried the reindexing script from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd939795(WS.10).aspx
, (don't copy the command line, it has weird characters in it, just type it in manually.) and it completes but it didn't improve anything.

Found this:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and it also times out.

Found this comment:
For anyone who is getting Timeout Expired with obsolete updates. I have a solution! Use server name : "
\\.\pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\sql\query
" to connect with SQL managment studio. Once connected manually run "
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup
". This will return a list of obsolete ID's. For each one run "
exec spDeleteUpdate @localUpdateID=000000
", where 000000 is the ID. For myself I found the first ID in the list took a full 37 minutes to delete and then after that I could run the cleanup through the GUI as per usual.

Found that you actually need to do:
USE SUSDB
GO
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup

And to connect in the first place, I had to hit Options, and select named pipe from the middle pull down.

First delete took 6 minutes and memory has spiked up to almost 15GB in use out of 16GB physical. But the WSUS console (Update Services) still shows the same number of old updates. Failure? I don't think so: I'm running the cleanup wizard again and so far it isn't timing out... It has run over night, and has made some progress; the bar has moved perhaps 5%.

So... My take is that the SQL server causes this problem when there is to much data, because the indexes are poorly designed (not because the indexes need to be re-indexed) causing the first query to time out, which causes the cleanup to fail. Once you get past that first deletion, and have everything loaded into memory, the cleanup tool can stay connected long enough to delete each unneeded update.

Next step will be to find a command line method, such as:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and put it into the task scheduler like Microsoft should have done at the beginning to keep this from getting out of hand.

P.S. Lawrence Garvin, please do NOT reply to this; I have no need of your arrogance.

Windows 10 in Non–Active Directory Environment

Hi

I have a setup with Windows 7 Home computers getting updates from a WSUS server (Windows server 2012 R2). I would like to upgrade the computers to Windows 10 Home edition, but I can see that Windows update has changed a lot. I have tried with my old registry settings for Non-Active Directory Environment, but the clients down not seem to find any new updates.

This is the knowledge I have based my setup on: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc708449(v=ws.10).aspx

Is it possible to do the same with Windows 10 Home, maybe with some new registry keys?

gzip stream issue

I am having an issue when attempting to export updates from my WSUS.  My environment is a little unique compared to most.  I have WSUS 3.0 SP2 installed on 64-bit Windows Server 2008.  We have a single forward facing WSUS with an outside connection.  I should also mention upfront that upgrading my server to a newer OS and version of WSUS is NOT an option at this point in time so I need to make this work somehow. We use that to export updates using powershell with the following command:

./wsusutil.exe export E:\WSUS\Export_Cabs\export.xml.gz E:\WSUS\Logs\export.log

We then copy the exported metadata to a removable drive and air gap it over to our WSUS on an isolated network and import the metadata.

For the first few months after we implemented this WSUS installation, everything worked perfectly.  Then one day a couple months ago, I ran the export as I normally do but this time the export failed with the following error:

"The gzip stream can't contain more than 4GB data."

After researching potential causes/solutions, I came across KB2828185.  I checked my update history and it was previously installed far prior to encountering this issue.  At the time, I had .NET 3.5 and .NET 4.5.1 installed.  I have removed them and replaced them with .NET 4.0 and still receive the same error.  I am at my wits end on this.  Every solution I have found leads me to KB 2828185 but this does not fix the problem.  Anybody who can offer some advice or other avenues to explore would be greatly appreciated.
