Connection Error WSUS Console

Hi,

When opening the WSUS console i now get the following error -

An Error occurred trying to connect the WSUS server. This error can happen for a number of reasons. Check connectivity with the server. Please contact your network administrator if the problem persists.

In the event logs we have the event id: 7053. I can supply the whole event if needed.

Does anyone know how i might be able to resolve this?

Thanks.

WSUS clients stuck at "not yet reported" after routing change

I have a group of 20 machines, all Windows 7 with sp1. These machines are scattered across different sites, each site has 2 machines. They were able to report and download patches from my WSUS server a year ago. Since the change in network routing last year October, these clients no longer communicate with the WSUS server, thus I deleted them from WSUS console. I had worked with my network team to re-route the network traffic back to my WSUS server but through a new route and opened up TCP 80 and 8530 in the firewall. These clients were able to be seen in my WSUS server but remains stuck at "not yet reported".

There are 600 other clients reporting to this WSUS server without problem (but there was no network routing change for these clients), so problem is not with the server.

I read through the windowsupdate.log, really don't understand the messages, hope our experts here can provide some insight hints.

I have WSUS server with 500 PCs on it (Windows 7 SP1 x64).

200 PCs refused to install IE11. I found that needed for IE11 update is not installed on those PCs, is KB2834140.

KB2834140 has status Not Applicable.

I tried to install it manually on different PCs but with no luck.

How can I install it and why it can have such a strange status "Not Applicable"?

I have performed:

SFC /scannow

cleanup of a WU temp location

Investigated logs provided with System Update Readiness Tool (nothing special was found there)

Thank You!

Cannot delete computers from WSUS

Hello All,

I am unable to delete a number of computers in our WSUS environment,

Whenever I try to remove these computers the GUI crashes and I have to reset it, if I try a delete operation in PowerShell I get the following:

Exception calling "Delete" with "0" argument(s): "The DELETE statement conflicted with the REFERENCE constraint
"FK__tbExpande__Targe__1881A0DE". The conflict occurred in database "SUSDB", table
"dbo.tbExpandedTargetInTargetGroup", column 'TargetID'.
The statement has been terminated."
At line:1 char:1
+ $targets[0].Delete()

    + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (:) [], MethodInvocationException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : SqlException

What I think has happened is that these machine have a relationship with a computer target group that no longer exists. I don't know how that could happen, but we recently cleanup our group structure and I think the issue is related to that.

Updates not installing post KB3138615 on WS2012+WS2012R2

Hi!

On all my 2012 and 2012R2 servers updates are not installing after applying KB3138615.

Our WSUS server is on 2012R2.

In a secondary environment we have a WSUS server on 2008R2 and there all 2012R2 servers are correctly installing and rebooting as expected.

NOTE: in both environments the AlwaysAutoRebootAtScheduledTime setting is enabled.

Before applying KB3138615, updates were installing, but the servers were not rebooting as expected, now install and reboot does not work at all in the WSUS 2012R2 environment!

Does anyone have any idea as to what might have happend?

Perhaps the KB3138615 effectively kills off the WSUS agent when contacting WSUS 2012R2, and need a code review by MS?

Best regards,

Michael

I have a Server 2008 R2 WSUS server that is connected to the internet and downloads updates. I have an offline WSUS server on a closed network running Server 2012 R2.  Starting in February, when importing (wsusutil.exe import export.xml.gz import.log) it fails with:

Import failed to import updates.  Please look at the log file for error details.  Fatal Error: Unexpected end of file has occurred.  The following elements are not closed: Metadata, Update, Updates, ExportPackage. Line 4037, position 66330143.

The log file doesn't seem to have any additional information other than the above message repeated in the log file.

Does anyone have any ideas, or anything additional I can look at?  Thanks!

Hello All,

I wonder if anyone can please explain the following to me.

I have just installed sp2 and wanted someone to explain the 'set a deadline for the approval' feature in the automatic approvals?  How does it work?

Is it meant for say.... group A has deadline of 5 days and group B has deadline of 10 days so that group A installs updates 1st and then 10days later group B installs ???

Much Appreciated

Mark Shannon

Users getting immediate reboot prompt after manually installing uodates

We have had some Windows 7 users manually install updates that had a WSUS installation deadline set for the next day.  However, as soon as they manually installed the update, they were prompted to reboot with a 15 minute countdown that had no option to cancel or postpone just as if the installation deadline had already passed.

They intended to start the installation while working and finish the reboot when they left for lunch a few hours later, but had to interrupt their work to reboot immediately after the installation completed instead.

Why is this happening before the installation deadline has been reached?

How to approve only one udpate with PowerShell command "approve-wsusupdate"

Hi Guys ,

Does any guys know how to approve one patch with approve-wsusupdate command in windows server 2012 R2 ?

According to technet documents that I have to use get-wsusudpate to find one patch and then approve it withapprove-wsusupdate

Example : Get-WsusUpdate -Approval AnyExceptDeclined | ? {$_.update.title -like "Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3072630)"} | Approve-Wsusupdate -Action Install -TargetGroupName "All Computers"

That's so slow to find one patch in over 3000 patches with get-wsusudpateand approve it .

So does anyone know how to approve one patch directly with command "approve-wsusupdate" . If so , Could you please give me an example : )

Thanks a lot

Trying to understand WSUS updates

Hi,

I have installed a Windows 2012 R2 server with WSUS services. I have created a TestGroup of computers to check the installation and make tests before put it in production. I have configured a GPO for 4 computers: One Windows 2008 R2 server, one Windows 2012 R2 Server, one Windows 10 client and one Windows 7 client. This GPO puts those 4 computers into the TestGroup group.

I have set to update computers once a day. I have downloaded all available updates in WSus server, and approved all for the TestGroup.

I see in that group that, for example, one of the servers needs 95 updates. They are approved but not installed. I log into that server, manually seach for updates, and the Windows Update screen says that there is no update available, the server is up to date. But in update history, it has updates installed from WSUS.

What is the reason for this to happen? How can I solve it?

Setting up WSUS to deploy patches on computers and servers

$

My current setup only deploys patches for computers and I would like to add also the servers. I have one server in the center location that is being used as a upstreamer and I have one server per other location that will connect to the upstreamer server and download the patches from this server.

I would like some suggestion on the new set up. I have two solutions:

a) Setup the current downstreamer wsus servers to also deploy patches for the servers located in the same location.

b) Setup a new server that will be dedicated to updates related to servers.

The only thing I am worrying about is if I choose option a, is there any why that can cause some security issues? And if I select be as the locations are spread all around the world, I think it will consume to much bandwidth to send all the patched from central location to the server directly.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

Upgrading to Windows 10 using WSUS doesn't work

Hi

I am trying to deploy the upgrade to Windows 10 to a test client running Windows 7 Professional Retail license (activated) in a virtual machine for testing purposes, but it doesn’t seem to be installing Windows 10. It appears to have downloaded the files, I can see the ESD in C:\$WINDOWS~BT, and the WindowsUpdateBox.exe in the SoftwareDistribution\Download\GUID folder.

I installed KB3095113 on my Server 2012 R2 WSUS server before I selected the Upgrade product group and synchronised, as instructed in the Blog and KB article. However I have ran the powershell commands anyway to clear this out and reset it in case there was a problem, but it’s still not installing on my client (http://blogs.technet.com/b/wsus/archive/2016/01/30/quot-help-i-synched-upgrades-too-soon-quot.aspx).

This is a brand new build of Windows 7 Pro (all the updates), activated, and about 30GB free space. I can see the machine report into the WSUS console and when I click to see why it failed to install I can see it states “Download succeeded” whereas earlier it says download failed, but I have since added the ESD as a MIME type in IIS on my WSUS server. So it is getting further than it was before. I have also approved the upgrade for this machine, as WSUS synchronises many versions of Windows 10, I first approved the Windows 10 Pro en-GB Retail but the client reported into WSUS requesting en-US Retail so I approved that also.

My WindowsUpdate.log, setupact.log and setuperr.log files are in the link below.

Windows 10 Pro & WSUS - Install Updates on Shutdown

$

Hi,

I just installed WSUS on Windows Server 2012 (without R2) with the Hotfix 3095113. I have set the update settings in the WSUS GPO to "Auto download and notify for install" and Windows 10 reflects this as "Notify for install".

This actually works and I am informed in Action Center about new updates. However, there is no Option to install the updates at reboot and shutdown - Windows shows just the normal shutdown and reboot options. "Fast Shutdown" is already disabled.

I only get the options if I install updates manually that require a restart. After they have been installed - approx 30 minutes laters - the start menu options change to "Shutdown and install updates" and "Reboot and install updates".

Is there a way to get this functionality working so the option to install updates on shutdown is always shown when new updates are available? On Windows 7 we are installing all updates during shutdown which is especially important for 3rd party updates like Java and Flash which cannot be installed during a browser is running.

The Windows 10 version I'm testing with is 1511 x64.

Thanks,
Michael

WSUS centralize management from Master wsus server

Hi All, we have a WSUS environment consisting of a master server and 5 downstream servers. The Master server is running windows 2012r2 and the downstream servers are at 2008r2.  The master points to MS website for getting updates and the 5 downstream server get their updates from the Master server.  When we approve updates we are touching each of the 6 servers (master plus 5 downstream) to approve them for release.  Is there a way to centralize this process so we only touch the master server for approval and these approved filter down to the downstream servers already approved?

WSUS install on 2008R2 fails from WID

I've got a 2008R2 server that did have WSUS installed. It was removed; I believe the DB was deleted prior to uninstalling however. When I tried to install WSUS; I got errors indicating database still remained. Trying to install WID specifically as a feature gives me an error of "Attempt to install windows internal database failed with error code 0x80070643. Fatal error during installation"

I've checked registry keys, wininit.ini file, and attempted to follow the various posts for removal. Neither WSUS or WID show up in add/remove programs, or with msicuu.exe

Not allowed to link/attach here yet, but the log is at https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/36390841/msi.log

anyone have any suggestions?

(I couldnt think what forum would be the correct one if not this - let me know if i'm wrong though)

Hi

I believe i read that the Wsusscn2.cab only contains Security Update reference, what about all the other Updates that is release, are there a cab for these also?...

Another problem it seems like that the Wsusscn2.cab is not about the same day as "patch tuesday" any officiel MS note on when this file is updated...
