Windows Update Server 2008 R2 Std

Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because updates on this computer are controlled by your system administrator

PS. I have approved all updates but only one server got the updates, the other 8 servers have not updated and when you look at the wsus console the the 8 servers are sitting on 96% installed.

WSUS 3.2 replica server synchronization failed with error 'OutOfMemoryException'

Hi,

The problem I have is, the downstream servers cannot synchronize to their upstream server. Every time gets the synchronization with 0%  the error 'OutOfMemoryException'…
Nevertheless the same problem exists with the version 3.2.7600.226 too.
The Automatic Approvals is activated for several computer groups, which during this process occurred no error.
I assume the failure occured as soon as I approved many updates to all 60 computer groups.

We have one upstream w2k8 server and 22 downstream w2k3 server as replica.
All servers are locating in different geographical locations and have this problem.
The master upstream server has no synchronization problem to the MS update server.

These steps I have already done without any effect.
wsusutil reset
Dbcc checkdb
Reindexed DB
Reduced declined updates
Restarted IIS, BIT, SQL server, wsus service

WSUS 3.2 replica server synchronization failed '...when trying to import updates into the data store...'

Hi,

for this issue I have already found the thread "http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverwsus/thread/2408f2ab-06a8-497e-bf55-a6a0b88d2d15" in this forum but the answer those not corresponds to my case.

My there replica servers which I rebuild new cannot synchronize with the upstream server successfully. According to the logfile there are four updates which are causing this problem. My other replica servers have no problem with these four updates.

The four updates can be found on the upstream server but not on the replica downstream servers.

Upstream server: 3.2.7600.251

Downstream replica servers: 3.2.7600.251

The there downstream replica servers are been rebuild new.

Declining these updates on the upstream server did not help.

Hi,

WSUS 3 SP2 on Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition SP2. Security Update for Windows XP (KB2753842) is showing up twice in WSUS. From what I been reading online it appears MS might have botched the patch and then re-released it. When the patch first came out it was assigned to my test group in WSUS for testing prior to a larger roll out. Then the re-release of patch came out. So now its showing up twice in the console. I went ahead and declined the expired update and approved the revised update for my test group. I then ran the clean up wizard and it did not delete the expired update which had been declined. Apparently I am not following the correct procedure. Can someone help?

Best way to have test patches then roll out??

$

I have seen different flavors of this question asked and answered but none of them seem to quite fit what I am looking to accomplish.  I manage a network of approximately 700 windows xp point of sale machines.  They all point to a WSUS 3.0 server. I currently have updates being installed across these 700 machines on various nights of the week in hopes of avoiding a nightmare situation where patches break our application and then we would not be able to sell any product.  I have the WSUS server configured to automatically install anything critical and security.  Also, each POS is configured via group policy.

About a month or so ago we had this sort of situation happen.  Long story short, a microsoft patch was released (2661254) that broke one of our applications because of certificate length.  As a result, I was ordered to disable the windows update server until we had a better method to test prior to deployment of patches.

So my question is - is this possible with WSUS only??  For example, it makes sense to me to have a test bed of locations,  maybe 25 endpoints that patches could be deployed to, maybe the days after each patch tuesday.  Once we were sure that none of these updates were going to harm our application, we could then deploy the the rest of our organization.

At first look, I thought of looking at the GPO settings for configure automatic updates - but I don't see how  I can configure to install, for example, every 15 days.  I then noticed that I cannot make the detection frequency more than 22 hours.

How should I accomplish this?  What are the best practices?  Should I start looking at other products??

Thanks

WSUS server cleanup wizard disconnects for every 10 mins

We did not run the server cleanup wizard from long time. So I am sure it will take lot of time to complete. The problem is, when I try to use option 4 or 1 it got disconnected for every 10 mins exactly. I am trying one option at a time. I did 2, 3 and 5 options without any issue. Is there is some where specified it should disconnect after 10 mins so that I can change it to long time. I am sure no other task is running on DB. I tried even Powershall but no luck.

Hello,

WSUS Server is installed on Windows 2008 R2 Server and WSUS DB is installed also on separate Windows 2008 R2 Server.

on database side, there is installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition.. and there is Named Instance configured (SQL01\WSUS).

i also prepared another SQL server which is in cluster, and there is installed SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Enterprise Edition (OS is windows server 2008 R2).

so i found an article related to this issue and i was following to that steps

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/winserverwsus/thread/7e5c7139-1e33-4f4b-a477-db77c43ee09c

1.Install SQL Server 2005 (with the Server and Client Tools option) and SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 or higher on your new server.

2.Stop the IIS Admin service and the Update Services service:

in Services snapin.

•Right-click IIS Admin Service, and then click Stop.

•Right-click Update Services, and then click Stop.

3.Detach the WSUS database (SUSDB) from the orginal SQL server.

sqlcmd -S np:\\.\pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\sql\query
use master
alter database SUSDB set single_user with rollback immediate
go
sp_detach_db ‘SUSDB’
go

when i m launching sqlcmd syntax in command promt it is not executed

C:\Users\adm>sqlcmd -S sql01\wsus
1>
2> sqlcmd -S np:\\.\pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\sql\query
3> use master
4> alter database SUSDB set single_user with rollback immediate
5> go
Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Server SQL01\WSUS, Line 2
Incorrect syntax near 'S'.
1> sp_detach_db `SUSDB'
2>

any ideas?

WSUS Web Management

On Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, I added the WSUS role and after going through some documentation, I was annoyed to see this:

Ease of use

Manage WSUS from the Administration Console

The WSUS 3.0 administration console has moved from a Web-based console to a plug-in to the Microsoft Management Console version 3.0. The new user interface provides the following features:

Has anyone found an open source solution to replace this functionality?

Clients are downloading updates but not installing and rebooting at set time

I am using WSUS 3.0 SP2 on my domain and a week ago I changed the time on my GPO to update the clients. After that the clients stopped updating and rebooting like they were doing before. I haven't modified anything  else in my GPO other than the time the clients are to install the updates and they worked fine before. The log from one of the clients is below. The icon in the system tray shows up that updates are available and I can see in the event logs that the client downloaded the updates. On this client I tried de-registering the dll's and re-registering them. I checked all my settings in GPO and toggled them but no luck.

wsus and other servers in DMZ (workgroup) need to communicate

Hi,
I have WSUS 3.2.7600.266 and about 4 servers (Windows 2008 R2) in the DMZ in a Workgroup.
Does anyone know how I can configure the systems so the Windows servers will pull updates from the WSUS server in the DMZ?

I hae tried this ->http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/2267-deploy-wsus-to-clients-without-ad-domain-gp-using-the-registry

I tried the script and it failed, it is for Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00. I need to apply it to a Win 2008R2 server w/ ver 6.1 registry editor.

Anyone suggestions?

Thanks!

I have setup SCCM 2012 Sp1 on Server 2012 with WSUS using the internal database. When I sync updates in SCCM, I get the following error on some of the updates

"Error: The Microsoft Software License Terms have not been completely downloaded and cannot be accepted. Source: Microsoft.UpdateServices.Internal.BaseApi.SoapExceptionProcessor.DeserializeAndThrow"

"Sync failed: Failed to sync some of the updates. Source: Microsoft.SystemsManagementServer.SoftwareUpdatesManagement.WsusSyncAction.WSyncAction.SyncUpdates"

Not all of the updates are showing this error. Also folders are being created in the WsusContent folder but they all seem to be empty.

WSUS fails to sync with windows update after install

Hi Everyone,

I have added the WSUS role to a new 2008 R2 machine, when i try to synch to windows update through the initial config wizard i get the below error msg

I doubt it's a proxy issue as i have the another wsus running with the same proxy settings with no problems (proxy server and credentials)

- Both servers can access the internet, and both have the same IE proxy settings.
- Both servers are running with the same WSusCertServer Service (Local System Account)

Any ideas? Thanks in advanced!

Does WSUS support S5 WOL?

Hi

I'm trying to set up WSUS in our environment and need this clarifying.

I've enabled WOL on all our desktop clients and they do wake from a cold state S5 using 3rd party class room management (I haven't got as far as setting up SCCM WOL yet but that is to follow).

I've also set up an Automatic Windows Update GPO which:

  • allows automatic downloading and installs on a schedule (every saturday from 7am)
  • has enabling windows update power management to automatically wake up the system to install scheduled updates
  • uses client side targeting.

I need to know that the power management side of things will turn the machine on from a S5 state. If not, why not!?

Also I'll need an alternative solution. Ideally a way of turning on all the desktops before the 7am start time using either a scheduled task or automatically sent wake up packet. Would it maybe make more sense to configure SCCM first so it could wake the machines but my understanding is that it'll only send wake up packets when deploying software? I've also read that broadcasting such packets requires unicast as they will crossing multiple subnets and these don't work with S5.

Is it worth setting up a scheduled task on the desktops to boot before 7am or does the command have to come through the nic to automatically boot. I did read somewhere about maybe setting the BIOS to wake, is that a better option? I hope not as it would require me changing all the BIOS settings manually unless anyone has any bright ideas on sorting that as well.

Any assisstance with this topic would be greatly appreciated, even if it's just pointing me to the right thread.

Environment: Windows 7 HP 3130 sff clients (BIOS revision 6.16) with Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller nics , 2008 servers, Update service version 3.2, SCCM 2007 v 4

Secure WSUS deployment

Hi,

I have setup WSUS on Windows 2008 R2 Ent., using IIS7. I would like to secure the deployment by configuring SSL. From the research I have done it appears that I need to:

  • setup SSL on WSUS using IIS.
  • get a certificate, I have a internal root CA.
  • create an https binding on site

are these the only configs that would be required? do they need to be done in any specific order? Please let me know if I need to supply any additional information.

Thanks.

Supersedence of some Office 2010 packages

$

Hi all,

I have a WSUS 3.0 SP2 setup on a 2003 domain with mixed Windows 7 and Windows XP machines, all 32-bit. I've been applying updates using the supersedence column sort so that only the latest and most comprehensive packages are applied. I've approved all packages that have the blue square on top and the ones which have no supersedence icon, and all have been correctly applied.

However there are a few superseded Office packages that are still reported as needed for my computers, some with the blue square on the middle and some with the blue square on the bottom. For example:

- KB2553455 (bottom square), which has been superseded by KB2597091

- KB2597091 (middle square), which has been superseded by KB2687509 and KB2598289

When I go to the details of KB2687509 and KB2598289, both report as Not Applicable for any of my computers, so they aren't supposed to be installed on the computers.

What should I do to sort this out?

Thanks

Gustavo

I've been all over the forums on this but have yet to find a solution. I have a downstream WSUS server running WSUS version 3.2.7600.226 with 64 clients connected (both Win 7 and Win XP).The server is not in a load balanced cluster, but clients were redirected to another server via Group Policy before this server was in place.

2013-01-25         07:42:23:289       1164      1d8         Agent   Created new random SusClientId efad077d-cdf7-409e-bf40-d623ac06bf69. Old Id: none.

Thus far I have tried attacking this from the client and server angles:

To recap from the client side I've done:

- I have stopped the AU service, deleted the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder then restarted the AU service (which recreated the SoftwareDistribution folder) and ran wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow
- I have stopped the Windows Management Instrumentation Service, renamed the REPOSITORY to REPOSITORY.OLD in C:\Windows\system32\wbem and restarted the service which recreated the REPOSITORY folder
- I have
stopped the AU service, deleted the SUSID from the registry:
REG DELETE "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v AccountDomainSid /f
REG DELETE "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v PingID /f
Reg Delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v SusClientId /f
Reg Delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v SusClientIdValidation /f
- then restarted AU service and ran wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow
- as some blogs indicated a change in local permissions on the C:\ drive I compared the local C:\ drive permissions with a working PC connected to a different WSUS server and saw no difference
- some blogs indicated a services permission issue using a custom account
   - Automatic Update Service, Background Intelligent Transfer Service were both using the Local System account
   - dependent service (on the XP box) Remote Procedure Call was using Network Service account

Clients could then always talk to the WSUS server, update their "Reported" status, and get metadata approvals, but would never download updates (would stay at status "Not Installed" and never move to "Downloaded")

As some blogs indicated an issue with IIS, from the server side:
- I uninstalled the IIS role, all dependent roles and services and WSUS
- I removed all files and local DB's during the WSUS uninstallation
- Rebooted, then again after the IIS removal was complete after that reboot
- reinstalled IIS and WSUS, re-setup the server as a downstream (no SSL no proxy - as before)

Now all clients (Win 7 and Win XP) hit the WSUS server and hang indefinitely in a "Not Yet Reported" status unless I run a wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow  command where they will at least register a status, but when they do, same issue as before. Metadata on approvals shows ok, but client does not download any updates.

Wanting to verify the PCs needed updates so while I was on one I had it hit Windows Update via IE. PC needed 9 updates. I was able to successfully download and install one update as a test, then rebooted the PC, so the AU client is working when connected to Windows Update directly.

Then after stopping and starting the service net stop/start wuauserv  and re-registering with  wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow
this is how the log looks now:

The WSUS client now seems to think it needs zero updates when talking to the WSUS server. What gives?

Having looked at 15 or 16 blogs on this subject over the last week or so and having done everything I can think of from a client and server side - I am at a loss to understand where issue lies. Can anyone help?

WSUS Role (Re)Install on Server 2012 Errors at "Post-deployment Configuration" Failed

I'm looking for some help troubleshooting WSUS Role (Re)Install on Server 2012, we are seeing the error "Post-deployment Configuration" Failed.

The Role install process itself completes without error, but the post-deployment configuration task fails almost immediately with a generic error stating "Configuration failed.  A log file was created at ..." and the referenced log file is always present but 1K on disk and seems to be empty, so I don't really have any good clues as to what is going wrong.

I have tried both the default WID option as well as pointing to an instance of SQL2012 running locally on the box (for SCCM 2012).  One underlying question is if WSUS does in fact support SQL 2012, but since the install fails when using WID as well I don't THINK this is the issue.

IIS (Web role) is already installed and seems to be running properly, i.e. I can browse to the default home page.  SCCM is also installed and has some roles configured, but I'm at the point of installing WSUS so the roles that depend on that are not currently installed.

I have tried removing the WSUS role, rebooting, and reinstalling with no change.  I have also tried to follow all of the "forced" uninstall instructions on this forum (mainly http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverwsus/thread/f447e7d6-7007-4eb6-b38b-90f92525e09), but between not being able to find a trustworth source for the now defunct Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and also not finding the MSIZAP tool in 2012, there isn't much useful there other than some file and registry locations to check, which seem to be uninstalling cleanly when I remove the role and reboot.

I'd appreciate any clues on what other logs to check or what else might be going wrong.  Please let me know if you need any other details of the problem.

Thanks,

-Scott
