Hello,

I need to verify the system requirements for installing WSUS/WDS on a Windows server 2012 r2 machine virtual machine

(We have VMWARE ESXI 6.0.

Once I verify the requirements then I'll need to make the adjustments on an existing 2012 r2 server on this virtual machine then i'll be ready to install WSUS/WDS.

I can be reached at scott.samuel.w@gmail.com

Question about monthly update rollups (e.g., 3179574) for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2

$

This question is regarding the new monthly update rollups for "Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2"

In May and in June, there was a nice list of "Fixed issues" / KB#s

May: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3156418

June: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3161606

However, in July and August that nice list was missing the "Fixed issues" / KB#s data:

July: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3172614

August: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3179574

Anyone know why this is? And if that data is available elsewhere?

TIA.

Attempting to deploy Windows 10 build 1607 over WSUS, clients say they're up to date

I have a strange issue and I'll do my best to explain it. I really hope somebody has a solution.

Yesterday the Windows 10 Anniversary update build 1607 appared on WSUS. I've been testing the build and making adjustments with the domain to make sure it works correctly. After enough testing I wanted to roll out the update earlier today.

For the november 1511 update I already took the steps to allow the Windows 10 Upgrades to show up in WSUS (Windows Server 2012 R2) and installed the correct hotfix and manually setup the IIS server to allow the downloading and decrypting of esd files. This worked flawlessly even though it took some time to get working.

The Windows 10 update downloaded without a problem after approving them. It takes up about 28GB for the Dutch and English version. Professional and Enterprise. I was able to do the upgrade on a test PC that was running Windows 10 1511 Professional without any problems, but all other computers in the network say they're up-to-date and do not detect the upgrade at all.

On another PC running Windows 10 Professional and three running Windows 10 Enterprise (all running the previous November update) the update simply does not appear at all. The event logs are useless since they simply say that there are no updates available.

I never enabled any policies or settings to defer upgrades and there is no DisableUpgrade registry entry or other stuff enabled that should prevent them from happening. I'm really confused but also found out that some non-domain members don't get the update. I should be able to force this by using WSUS though!

Any ideas?

WSUS & KB3159706

Hi,

It appears KB3159706 broke my WSUS. I don't have KB3148812 installed.

On getting various errors, I did the KB3159706 post install tasks as suggested. Also added the HTTP activation feature as suggested etc.

No joy.

I've now removed KB3159706

But..... I still get:

"Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database 'SUSDB'. [CLIENT: <named pipe>]"

And if I load the WSUS MMC and connect to database I get:

"Cannot connect to'localhost'. SQL server may not be running on the server.

Please verify that SQL server is running and configured correctly on the server. Contact your network administrator if the problem persists"

I'm using WinServ2012 R2 and the database is via Windows Internal DB.

I've also had a strange error appear in event viewer:

"A significant part of sql server process memory has been paged out. This may result in a performance degradation. Duration: 1247 seconds. Working set (KB): 75232, committed (KB): 218156, memory utilization: 34%%."

Now I'm stuck and not sure where to go next.

Update (@17:13):

I'm now getting an error:

"The schema version of the database is from a newer version of WSUS
than currently installed.  You must either patch your WSUS server to at least
that version or drop the database."

When I re-try the "wsusutil.exe postinstall /servicing"

Server 2012 R2 WSUS client Web Service is not working

I can't seem to find an answer to this question. I reloaded the OS, installed Windows Updates until there were no more. Then I added the role of WSUS. After running the post install configuration of WSUS I edited the web.config file according to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3159706

I removed and deleted all my Windows Update GPOs last week. I created a new GPO linked to one OU with one computer in it.

KB3172985 and Google Cloud Print

So we are in an education setting. We use Windows 10 Pro and google cloud print. Today, a large majority of us were not able to print using google cloud print. I quickly found this:

https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/omdLlyyPCu0;context-place=forum/chrome

Where users state that the google cloud print installation errors out. Which leads to most of us uninstalling google cloud print and trying to reinstall and this is where we encounter the error. After you install a windows update (i was never able to find the specified update), the install succeeds and printing resumes. However, we use WSUS and with Windows 10 the updates happen automatically which reinstalls the update that was removed. I know i can stop the update install but the issue is, the update to stop on the WSUS server does not appear to be the same across systems. So, i wanted to check here and see if anybody has reported this issue and if not, see if anyone has any ideas as to what is going on?

How to keep Win 10 up to date in business envoriment

Earlier this year we deployed Win 10 Pro to 200 computers and in WSUS we had one option in products available to keep it up to date: Windows 10.

With the anniversary update coming I was wondering which option where available in WSUS products.
There are e whole bunch of new products to keep Win 10 up to date but I don't have any idea what are the differences or what I really need.

Is here someone that can explain the differences and what is the best to check?

Thanks

Fails to upgrade clients to Windows 10 (1607)

$

0

I asked this question in the Configmgr forum, but might have better luck here, as I read it's more of a WSUS issue.

The Windows 10 anniversary update fails to install my test clients (Windows 10 1511).

WUHandler.log give me this error:

Installation job encountered some failures. Error = 0x80240022. Commit Result = 0x00000001.

C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log , tells me this for the update:

Remapping missing decrypt key error [0xC1800118] -> [0x80248008]

I have upgraded our site server (Windows 2012, also our Software update point. Seperate WSUS not used for clients), with the latest version(1606) applied, and the KB3159706 patch with the manual steps as described by MS

Some more drastic measures to mend this is described in this blog, but I'd rather see some official fix or comment on this.

Any suggestions?

WSUS to new 2012 R2 Server

Hello,

We have a WSUS 3.0 server running on a Windows 2008 R2 server with 5 downstream servers with the same configuration.

I have been tasked with upgrading WSUS with the new 2012 version.

I guess I am looking for opinions on how to accomplish this. I believe I can build a 2012 server and install WSUS on it and point it at the SQL database and it should pick update the database and pick up the setting and all would be good with the main WSUS server and the downstream servers?

Then upgrade all the downstream servers.

Or, should I just build a new main server and downstream servers and start off fresh.

Opinions and thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Update server listed multiple times in navigation pane

I am new to WSUS. Deployed a new 2012 R2 server and added WSUS to it. Most of my machines are reporting to it. In the navigation pane I have always had it listed twice. Once just the name of the server and once with the domain included. I was attempting to get reporting worked out and install Report Viewer and .NET as well. Subsequently it is now listed 3 more times with the domain in the navigation pane for a total of 5 times. What does this mean?

WSUS 3.0 SP2 & Windows 7 Monthly Rollup

$

Hi,

Can you tell me if we can still use WSUS v3.0 sp2 to deploy the Windows 7 new Monthly Rollup which replaces individual updates from October 2016 ?

If we can, do we have to enable the 'download express installation files' option ? I understand there are disk space implications when enabling this option ?

We will be upgrading WSUS to 2012 R2 or maybe 2016 later in the year when Windows 10 clients start getting rolled out, what is the best way to upgrade the infrastructure, we have a master server and 20 - 30 downstream servers. I'm thinking of building a new 2012 R2 WSUS server, syncing it as a replica with the master 2008 R2 wsus 3.0 server and then reconfiguring the new server to sync with Microsoft update servers and reconfiguring downstream servers to sync with new master. We will then build new downstream servers, sync with local wsus 3.0 server and then reconfigure to sync with upstream server and decom old server

Will this approach work ?

Thanks

WSUS suddenly no longer works

I have a 2012 WSUS server that has been working fine and suddenly I can't get the WSUS GUI to open the server. It just says "Error: Unexpected Error".

There are a lot of 7053 errors in the Application log that all say:

The WSUS administration console has encountered an unexpected error. This may be a transient error; try restarting the administration console. If this error persists,
Try removing the persisted preferences for the console by deleting the wsus file under %appdata%\Microsoft\MMC\.

System.NullReferenceException -- Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Source
Microsoft.UpdateServices.UI.SnapIn

Stack Trace:
   at Microsoft.UpdateServices.UI.SnapIn.Scope.ServerSummaryScopeNode.ResetScopeNode()

I've tried deleting the wsus file multiple times but that does not help.

This may have something to do with a Windows update recently installed as several were installed from the last couple months worth of updates.

I did find one article that talked about KB3148812 and its replacement KB3159706 and to run wsusutil.exe with postinstall /servicing switches. I found the latter update and removed it, rebooted the server, but it didn't help.

Any idea what to do to get this back working?

Thanks,

Jonathan

WSUS download fails

WSUS server on 2008 server.  Am not able to download the Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows 7, 2008 and Windows 7 , 2008 R2 64-bit version for the last two months (July and August 2016).  However the MSRT 64-bit version for Windows 8.x and 2012 R2 does download.

I tried the wsusutil reset command but that did not resolve the issue.

The URL in the log entry above appears to be incomplete, so I cannot download the file manually.

The WSUS server does not go through the proxy server, so the "Reason: HTTP status 407: Proxy authentication is required" is questionable; i.e., spurious.  Besides, most updates are downloading to the WSUS server just fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

WSUS Client not reporting

Hello,

I am currently trying to deploy a WSU Server for our Domain and everything seems to working fine upstream. My server is synchronizing with Microsoft for the updates. My problem is that no computers are showing up in the console.

We have created an update policy and applied it to a container. Does the Windows Update policy have to be linked to the default domain policy?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

PRM.
