HOW TO MAKE “Windows Server Update Service” THE DEFAULT AU SERVICE ON WINDOWS SERVER 2016

$

Hi,

I have a problem in my WSUS deployment in regard to Windows Server 2016. Windows Server 2016 cannot connect to WSUS server unless it has Internet connectivity of some sort. But as soon as I prevent access to the Internet, connection to the WSUS server would fail.

After some research I found that starting from Windows Server 2016 the default AU Service is Windows Update.

$MUSM=New-Object -ComObject"Microsoft.Update.ServiceManager"

$MUSM.Services

If you do the same thing on Windows Server 2012 R2 and downward, you will notice that “Windows Server Update Service” is the default AU Service.

I found the following registry key related to the subject.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\RequestedAppCategories

It seems that if I could change the default AU Service to “Windows Server Update Service” (WSUS) the problem would be solved.

Are you aware of any technique or method to achieve that?

Yours.

Hey

Machines that are on daily, show last contact as recent. But last Status report is back to Feb!

As i say, i know these machines are on, connected to the domain daily. Why is the status report not updating?

WSUS/IIS mysterious 404

WSUS update "Feature update to Windows 10 (consumer editions), version 1803, en-us" (KB: 3012973) is associated with the file E698E1F0C2E6022982A48E299E06936F84D83A74.esd.  This is a 3 GB file.

IIS claims the file does not exist (404), but it does (see screenshots below).  Because of the 404, my clients cannot receive this update.

If I rename the file from E698E1F0C2E6022982A48E299E06936F84D83A74.esd to E698E1F0C2E6022982A48E299E06936F84D83A74.bin, then IIS serves the file without error (see below).

I also included a screenshot of the failed download of the "bin" file when it was not yet renamed to prove that I am working in the correct directory.

Why does IIS 404 this file with an esd extension?  Why does IIS serve the same file without error when the exension is changed?

the server is a brand new install its windows server 2016 standard

it is domain attached obviously

the storage is not local on the server it's a NAS and the path to access storage is like so: \\xx.xx.xx.xx\wsus\wsus

the server when synchronising is downloading updates and storing them fine on the storage but i still get the error that the storage is not accessible.

i checked the path in the IIS manager and it was missing the \\ at the begining of the path.

thats all i can think of for now. can someone help me resolve that?

WSUS Breaks after KB3159706, released 5/5/2016

Hey all, just installed KB3159706 on my WS 2012 R2 WSUS Server at 2PM on 5/5/2016.  This was supposed to fix/issues when KB3148812 was released a few weeks ago.  Don't install KB3159706, it breaks WSUS.

C'mon Microsoft, get your stuff together.  I'm tired of this amateur hour BS.

Locally Published Packages failing to download from WSUS 0x80d02002

I'm continually getting the "0x80d02002" error when attempting to download locally published packages from WSUS. All computer are running Windows 10, but some are on 1511, 1803, and everywhere in between. This started happening a few months ago, but not sure what, if anything changed to cause this to happen.

It appears that most other updates complete the download, but the rest of the updates eventually seem to fail due to the packages failing.

Server is WS 2012 R2 for reference. The packages are mostly small software like Adobe, Java, etc., all seem to time out and fail with this error.

The usual delete SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folders has not worked.

WSUS Console Connection Error. Reset server node. Event ID 7053

Hello,

I'm having difficulty establishing a connection in the WSUS  console.  When I start WSUS, I can see my WSUS server listed, but when I select it, the connection seems to time out and I'm face with the error message: Error: Connection Error. I'm giving the option to 'reset server node'.

Event ID 7053 is shown (see below).  The services are running and I've tried deleting the MMC file as suggested.

Anyone got any advice on this, or is there any other Logs I can look at/post in relation to this?  The server is running On 2008 R2.

Many thanks

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.

Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.

We have one WSUS Upstream Server (Central) configured to stream with Microsoft Updates Server and 2 Downstream Servers (Primary Servers) connected to the Upstream Server.

The Upstream Server Synchronization succeeded with Microsoft Updates Server, but both the downstream Servers getting synchronization failed with the below error message.

WSUS Synchronization Failed with the error "The upstream server experienced an unexpected error. Please try again at a later time."

Details:

InvalidOperationException:    at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol.ReadResponse(SoapClientMessage message, WebResponse response, Stream responseStream, Boolean asyncCall)

   at Microsoft.UpdateServices.ServerSync.CatalogSyncAgentCore.SyncConfigUpdatesFromUSS()

   at Microsoft.UpdateServices.ServerSync.CatalogSyncAgentCore.ExecuteSyncProtocol(Boolean allowRedirect)

We tried the below but no luck,

1) Restarted WSUS, IIS services in Upstream Server.

2) Verified the credentials and WSUS folders access settings and found fine.

Can someone support on this to fix this WSUS downstream server sync failed issue ?

After Preboot Execution Phase, Laptop Reboots to No Boot Device Found

$

Hello:

I have a new Dell Latitude 3390 laptop. Our current DHCP server doesn't allow for UEFI booting so on all our new systems we are disabling secure boot, enabling legacy option ROMs and using the legacy device list and are PXE booting to our WDS server that way.

I have imported the drivers for this laptop into MDT. I created a task sequence for it. I then regenerated the boot image. The laptop boots fine to the server. I select the task sequence, give it a machine name and start imaging. The OS progress bar gets to 100% and it reboots. It then gives a 'no boot device found' error.

The laptop reboots and seems to be skipping or not finding anything on the hard drive. It goes straight to PXE/network boot where I can hit F12 to boot to our imaging server again.

I did recently update MDT/ADK to the latest version but I can't be certain that's the cause. I imaged 96 PCs using this same procedure and they worked fine. Upon reboot, they boot and continue the imaging process.

Click here for a small video of what's happening.

Can't delete unused updates from WSUS console Cleanup Wizard

$

I'm trying to regain disk space by deselecting many unused products that were selected and then running the server cleanup wizard on Server 2016.

When running the cleanup wizard, I checked only the box to delete unused updates and update revisions, but it only runs for a few seconds and then the entire WSUS console crashes and says and error occurred trying to perform a database operation.

I have already run other options such as deleting expired and superceded updates and that worked, but I still can't delete unused updates and update revisions.

There is only one language selected and not that many products left selected after I removed the excess ones, yet the WSUSContent folder is still close to filling a 2TB drive.

How can I get past this issue?

WSUS Deployed on Windows Server 2016 - Windows 10 and 2016 clients no longer presented option to check for updates direct from Microsoft

$

Since we upgraded to Windows Server 2016 and the latest WSUS (3.2?) - we've noticed that we no longer have the ability to manually tell Windows 10x or Windows 2016 clients to look for updates from Microsoft.

Prior to this, by default, when you launch Windows Update, you'd be presented with check now option (which would look to the WSUS server). But there would be an option next to it that would say something along the lines of, "Check for updates from Microsoft Servers" - and when you chose that option, it skipped looking in WSUS and went direct to the update servers on Microsoft.

Since we've upgraded, that option to look directly to Microsoft's update servers has disappeared. I thought it may be that somehow the GPO changed or needed to be switched back from a new configuration - but nothing. I can't find any option to fix this in GPO, WSUS or anywhere else. The only work around I've found, is I have to disable the GPO policy for WSUS - at which point the client will then default back to looking at Microsoft.

We have times (especially with clients failing updates) where we want to point to the Microsoft Update server to verify if the installer is working or perhaps something in our WSUS is corrupt or something else. We REALLY want this option to return please - as once in a while, we'll find going direct solves the problem for that one client (saving hours of troubleshooting).

Thanks,
Shawn

Security monthly quality updates failing with error code 800F0831

On a Server 2012 R2 all the Security monthly updates have been failing to install since October 2016!

The Security only updates do install and so does Security update for IE.

I have tried downloading the updates and running locally to no avail.

This is happening on a few 2012 R2 Servers. I tried deleting Software Distribution folder and re-running Windows update to no avail.

I have checked the CBS.log for CBS_E_STORE_CORRUPTION and tried manually installing the KB it was referring to. This failed as well.

Recent Patches pushed using wsus not detecting in endpoints

I've been in a process of installing MS Updates in an environment which has never Patched till date.I use WSUS . Almost every time I'm successful except scenarios like below.

Few of my Server 2008 R2 Sp1 Standard machines which has never Patched till Date. Few days back I pushed all available Patches from 2013 till May 2018. My problem is this, Machine is detecting all relevant Patches except the updates released after Jan 2018.

So I had installed all detected updates and re-booted. Once Server has came up, I've given 'Check for Update' once again. But Server says 'Windows is up to date'.

I tried following so far.

1. Created new folder in WSUS and moved Server into that and approved Patches from Jan18-May18 into that folder

2. Given wuauclt /detectnow /reportnow  and re-booted multiple times

Please help me to fix this

NB: Only recent Patch detect is Malicious Tool'

Note, I formatted the text to make it easier to read but it isn't being applied for some reason...

So in early February I was trying to get our system ready to do Windows 10 upgrades but after installing the updates on the server and enabling upgrades in SUP the clients stopped communicating with the server.  With not having too much time before February's updates I opted to just remove the monthly roll up I had applied and clients started communicating and updating again.  February patching went smooth.

Move forward to this month and our Test patching went well the weekend after patches were released.  After that weekend though things have gone downhill.  Clients have again stopped communicating with the server with the same error message in the windowsupdate.log which I've included here. >>

This time the server also has it's own issues  At the moment I'm unable to open WSUS.  I've restarted the WSUS IIS site, SQL is running and the WSUS service is running but it provides the following error:

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.

Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.

I use the AdamJ's WSUS Automated Maintenance script to maintain the database.  Currently the database is only around 4gb.  If I try to run the script right now it fails to connect to the server.

To no surprise the WSUS syncing is not working:

I figured I would post here to see if I can get a resolution before I just remove WSUS along with the database and just reinstall.  Let me know if you have questions.
