Hi all,

something wrong with updates, some computers doesn't get updates. For example windows 7 workstation cannot get updates from Windows server 2016 wsus server "Windows is up to date", however when i check update history, last update is installed in 9/23/2017.

WSUS Install Error 0x80070643: Fatal error during installation

Okay, on my 5th and final server with WSUS, where I "thought" I just needed to add the Win7SP1 folders for the WSUS3Setup.cab files. Not this one. I guess there's always got to be a devil child among the problem children.

This is an SBS2011 server with WSUS. I uninstalled WSUS a few weeks ago and am now reinstalling it. On this server, and this server only, I can't reinstall. Note that I'm doing the installation from the download package, not from the Server Manager. (Same results both ways). I'm getting the following error message in the WSUSSetup.log file.

2016-06-16 20:28:00  Error     MWUSSetup          InstallWsus: MWUS Installation Failed (Error 0x80070643: Fatal error during installation.)

2016-06-16 20:28:04  Error     MWUSSetup          DoInstall: Wsus setup failed (Error 0x80070643: Fatal error during installation.)

Further details are provided in the WSUSSetupmsi_160616_2026.log file.

Issue with Windows Updates on Windows Server 2016 computers

Hi,

we have an issue with Windows Server 2016 computers related to Windows Updates.

We use WSUS. 99% of our servers will be updated NOT automatically, but manually. Updates will be downloaded automatically and an administror decide to install or not install these updates.

Now we have following issue on Windows Server 2016 computers:

If the administrator chekcs updates, then the updates will be downloaded and updates will be INSTALLED AUTOMATICALLY! That is fatal.

This issue is new (since December 2017).

What is the reason for that, and the solution?

Best Regards

WSUS Language Packs

Hi

My environment consist of 1 primary upstream server located in the USA and 3 downstream servers located in Europe. I am not familiar with the process of deploying language packs. I know I need to enable them for download on my upstream server and then on the download servers that they are applicable.

What exactly does enabling language pack do? Am I correct in stating that patches will be downloaded in the language(Italian) of the pack selected. Or is language pack just one patch in the language specified?

Also if I approve the patch in (Italian) will it only install on applicable computers(that our in Italian or to all computers including the ones in English?

Windows Patch installation getting failed on Windows 2016 sevrer

Hi,

I'm using WSUS server (2016) to install windows patches. I'm facing bit strange issue and PFB details.

Issue-  Aug2018 (KB4343887 & KB43438814) patch is not getting installed in few (16 out of 50)  windows 2016 standard edition servers. All these servers are in same network. Last patch success is June cumulative patch on these servers

  • Patch getting detected in clients and installing 100%. While rebooting sever, its undoing the patches.
  • I've tried to install manually and same issue. I've disabled local windows firewall and disabled Antivirus alsoe. still no luck.
  • I've deregister and re-register the patch server & renamed SoftwareDistribution folder also. Still no luck.
  • I've made  bits, cryptsvc, trustedinstaller services automatic and no luck.

We have done the patching in 3 slots. Slot-1 -- 10 server (100% Success), Slot-2 -- 15 servers (1 server failed) and slot-3 on Aug 30th -- 25 servers (16 failed).

I've attached error screenshots.  Please assist me to resolve the issue. Is it failing because any dependent (MAY18 patch is already installed in that sevrers) patch missing or on AUG 30th new patch got release, due to this..?

Getting Started with WSUS?

So I am brand new to WSUS and I've been working with it a little bit here and little bit there and I can't seem to get my computer to show up in the management console at all. I have the role installed on the server and I have the policy enabled to allow client side targeting in the local group policy for my test machine and it even has the correct computer group name in the policy editor. What am I doing wrong here? It seems like it should be showing up just fine but it just won't.

Applying group policy for WSUS

Good day

I'm running Windows server 2008 r2 platform and recently installed the WSUS role in a server that does not have active directory, I have a server which runs as a domain controller now I need to know where should i implement the group policy because I don't see group policy management in the actual WSUS server.

Do i need to implement the group policy for WSUS in that domain controller?

Added .ADM files for an Exchange fix and now I can't tweak my WSUS policy settings

$

Hey all, I had to add some .ADM files to my GPM in order to fix a problem with Outlook 2013. Now the problem has been fixed but I've run into a snag -- I have computers that aren't being entered into WSUS. I checked Options > Computers and "Use the Update Services console" is selected. While it says that any new computers "...will automatically be placed in the Unassigned Computers group" that's not happening. I was going to change it to "Use Group Policy or registry settings on computers" but my WSUS settings aren't reachable. I can find them under the settings tab for the policy but they are listed as "Extra Registry Settings." Right under that there's a note that says "Display names for some settings cannot be found. You might be able to resolve this issue by updating the .ADM files used by Group Policy Management." I'm hesitant to do that because I don't want the Outlook issue returning (<-- management-mandated fix). Would updating the .ADM files fix my WSUS issue and leave the Outlook issue fixed too? If not any ideas, suggestions, or recommendations on how I can do both?

Thanks,

WSUS windows 10 User Reminders

$

Hey All

I am trying to sort out some WUSUS GPO policy issues. Here is what i am trying to achieve

1. Auto Download and install updates that do not require a reboot.

2. Reminder users for x days that some updates requiring a reboot are pending. Let say every 2 hours.

3. No Automatic reboot if user is logged in.

4. After x amount of days of reminding the user to restart or schedule the restart if it has not been scheduled i want the computer to auto restart it self even if the user was logged in.

Our clients are on various level of windows 10 as updates here have never been pushed to the point of reminders and automatic restarts and downloads so i am trying to get this all cleaned up now.

I have configured and trialled various options and as of now have a fair bit configured but cant quite get it to work 100%

Here is what i have

WU Client Error - 0x8024500C W10 1607 LTSB

Hello Guys,

i'm really not in the mood for any more problems about W10 and WSUS but here am i.

I recently found out  that if you have set the "defer feature updates" on a client an also activate "Do not connect to any Windows Update Internet locations" your W10 WU Client bricks. Okay so it works a couple of weeks and now i have a new problem. When i activate the GPO that a client changes the update behaviour and the Target Group the WU client bricks again. I do this cause i need the client in a first ring set up on which it gets the newly approved updates as a testclient first. How is it possibile that w2k8r2, w2k12r2 and w2k16 works without any problem and with w10 everything is messed up.

Hopefully i messed this up ..

Best regards and thank you

Michele

Getting past WSUS Cleanup Wizard time out, removing unnecessary updates.

$

Standard problem with WSUS Cleanup Wizard timing out without removing any unnecessary updates. SBS2K8. WSUS 3. 6000+ unnecessary updates awaiting approval. Huge database. Unresponsive SQL server. Lot of people have this problem:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/9724778f-c1a0-4d24-82e4-8b2d054257d6/wsus-hangs-on-cleanup-wizard-for-unused-updates-then-disconnects-from-console?forum=winserverwsus

Drives are regularly defragged in the background. Not gonna shut down the server and have down time just to fix this.

Tried the reindexing script from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd939795(WS.10).aspx
, (don't copy the command line, it has weird characters in it, just type it in manually.) and it completes but it didn't improve anything.

Found this:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and it also times out.

Found this comment:
For anyone who is getting Timeout Expired with obsolete updates. I have a solution! Use server name : "
\\.\pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\sql\query
" to connect with SQL managment studio. Once connected manually run "
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup
". This will return a list of obsolete ID's. For each one run "
exec spDeleteUpdate @localUpdateID=000000
", where 000000 is the ID. For myself I found the first ID in the list took a full 37 minutes to delete and then after that I could run the cleanup through the GUI as per usual.

by jjdacl on Apr 23 at 12:55 PM

Found that you actually need to do:
USE SUSDB
GO
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup

And to connect in the first place, I had to hit Options, and select named pipe from the middle pull down.

First delete took 6 minutes and memory has spiked up to almost 15GB in use out of 16GB physical. But the WSUS console (Update Services) still shows the same number of old updates. Failure? I don't think so: I'm running the cleanup wizard again and so far it isn't timing out... It has run over night, and has made some progress; the bar has moved perhaps 5%.

So... My take is that the SQL server causes this problem when there is to much data, because the indexes are poorly designed (not because the indexes need to be re-indexed) causing the first query to time out, which causes the cleanup to fail. Once you get past that first deletion, and have everything loaded into memory, the cleanup tool can stay connected long enough to delete each unneeded update.

Next step will be to find a command line method, such as:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and put it into the task scheduler like Microsoft should have done at the beginning to keep this from getting out of hand.

P.S. Lawrence Garvin, please do NOT reply to this; I have no need of your arrogance.
