WSUS - 2019 All Computers Server Node Crash

I wanted to try out a test 2019 WSUS server. Everything seemed to go smoothly, however when I go look at All Computers, I get a system node crash.

I looked at the possibility of it being the same as the bad BIOS name, but I do not seem to see any errors.

The error is as follows:

The WSUS administration console has encountered an unexpected error. This may be a transient error; try restarting the administration console. If this error persists,

Try removing the persisted preferences for the console by deleting the wsus file under %appdata%\Microsoft\MMC\.

System.InvalidCastException -- Unable to cast object of type 'System.Guid' to type 'System.String'.

Deleting Computer no Longer in Active Directory

Is there a script somewhere that can delete computers from WSUS(Server 2016) that have been removed from active directory?

Also if I delete a computer, that is still around will it just add its self back to the console?

Thanks..

Windows Server 2016 Microsoft report viewer 2012 redistributable and Microsoft system CLR types for microsoft sql server 2012

Anyone has any idea why do I need to install this 2012 version on windows server 2016?

and if i must please guide me how to install both step by step

WSUS MMC stopped working

Hello

The MMC worked fine for a few days, and then suddenly started showing me this: https://i.imgur.com/XUtOPL3.png
Rough translation: MMC cannot create the snap-in. The snap-in may not be installed correctly.
I tried removing the snap-in and installing it again (each time it requires me to unplug myself from our WSUS server). It didn't help.
Luckily I have access to the WSUS server itself and can manage it, but having a working MMC for it would be very convenient ;)

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Windows 10 1903

Our WSUS server (6.3.9600.18838) is receiving updates for all versions of Windows 10 except 1903. Looking for help as to how to receive updates for 1903.

Thanks!

Two Domains, WSUS Downstream Server and Database

Hi,

we have two domains.

- We would like deploy on "Domain A" an upstream server (UPSERVER). In"Domain B"will include only a downstream server (DOWNSERVER).

- Only UPSERVER download all updates from Microsoft Windows Updates Servers.

- UPSERVER has a dedicated SQL server.

- DOWNSERVER should only download all updates, etc. from UPSERVER.

- DOWNSERVER is NO replica server.

We don't want to use WID database for DOWNSERVER. Can DOWNSERVER use the same dedicated SQL instance and database from UPSERVER?

If yes, is it enough to have the open SQL TCP/1433 on WSUS database server? Or are another ports for SQL access necessary?

Best regards

Birdal

WSUS - Synchronization Failures after migrating WID to SQL Instance

Hello,

Hope all is well! I have been working to resolve an issue for the better part of 2 weeks now, and do not seem to have an end in sight. I have an issue regarding synchronization between my USS and DSS after migrating the WSUS WID instance to a SQL instance. I can still pull down the Microsoft Updates to the USS; however, when I try to sync from my DSS to my USS I will continually get the same error below:

"One or more errors were found when trying to import updates into the data store, and the synchronization has failed. The next synchronization will try to import the updates that were imported in this attempt."

I have edited the registry to support the remote SQL instance:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Update Services\Setup\SqlServerName - Giving the SQL Instance Name

HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Update Services\Setup\SqlInstanceIsRemote - Set value to '1'

HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Update Services\Setup\wyukonInstalled - Set value to '0'

HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Update Services\Setup\Installed Role Services - Changed 'UpdateServices-WidDatabase' to 'UpdateServices-Database'.

Looking at the Logs 'C:\Program Files\Update Services\LogFiles\SoftwareDistribution' does yield a pretty good amount of info.

Examples:

Bad Update Revision #319: f400c36b-d4bb-424b-a4a3-c4a837b04fff/203
   at Microsoft.UpdateServices.ServerSync.CatalogSyncAgentCore.ExecuteSyncProtocol(Boolean allowRedirect)

I can paste my entire SoftwareDistribution log file if needed. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Derek

.Net Framework 4.7.2 showing as not needed for Server 2016

We have a Windows Server 2016 WSUS server with a couple hundred servers checking into it for updates.  Our Windows Server 2016 servers have .NET Framework 4.6.2 installed on them by default.  When they check in to WSUS, .NET framework 4.7, 4.7.1, and 4.7.2 never downloads to them.  I searched for "Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2" in updates in WSUS and I see a whole bunch of options for different OS's including one with the same KB4054590 for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64 but I do not see one specifically for Server 2016.

I searched the Microsoft Update Catalog and "Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2 for Windows 10 Version 1607 and Server 2016 for x64 (KB4054590)" shows up in there.  I downloaded it and it installed on one of the 2016 servers just fine.

Other Server OS's have 4.7.2 installed and get the Cumulative updates for .NET framework when they come out.  Why are the 2016 servers different and not getting any .NET framework updates?

WSUS - Client Status Sync between Down- and Upstream-Server

Hi

I'm building a WSUS System environment on Windows 2019 Server.

My environment has an upstream and downstream-Server. The groupes are synced to the downstream server. As well the approved patches. Clients which are connected to the downstream server, get their patches correctly, as they are approved on the upstreamserver. I also see the correct status of the clients at the downstream-server.

But the status of the clients at the downstream-server are not synced back to the upstream-server.

How can I achieve, that i see all the client status (Updates needed, updates with error, etc.) on the Upstream-Server?

Thank you

Best regards
Martin

WSUS 2019 - Client-authentication on replica server

Hi

I would like to put a replica server to the dmz zone, which should be available for roaming clients.
Now as default, wsus ist unauthenticated, means every windows client could connect to this server.

Does WSUS support an option to authenticate the clients?

Thank you

WSUS not Updating Windows 10 Client

Hello fellow guru's. I have an issue where i'm unable to update a Windows 10 client computer with WSUS. I'm running WSUS version 10 on Server 2016, and deploying updates via GPO.

On the DC:
AD:
The client computer is a part of a universal security group called Pilot

Group policy:
Security filtering for Authenticated Users and  Pilot Group.
Under the delegation tab, "Apply Group Policy" is checked.

GPO OPtions:
Allow auto updates immediate install - enabled
Allow non-admins to receive update notifications - enabled
Auto restart at scheduled time (option 4) - enabled (install during maintenance not checked)
Enable Client Side Targeting - enabled and WSUS Test Computer Group Configured
Active hours - configured

On the WSUS Server:
Updates approved to be deployed to client workstation in Polit group

On the Client PC:
RSOP shows that all settings are applied
GPREsult /h shows no errors

Network:
Firewall settings are configured to allow all traffic from WSUS server
The servers can see each other via pings.

Any ideas?

How to install updates on 2016 servers without automatic reboots

Hi everybody!

I'm looking for a way to set WSUS and group policy so that approved updates are installed automatically, but not rebooted until our weekend scheduled reboots reboot the servers in sets of 10 (We've got around 100 VMs we need to reboot)

Currently I can get WSUS to allow updates to be installed and a GP to install updates automatically, but part of this GPO setting specifies that the updates that require reboots will cause the server to be rebooted either immediately or outside of "Active Hours". For us Active hours is 24 hours during the week so this isn't a viable option. We need to have a specific window in the weekend to reboot the servers. But we also don't want to have to manually go to each of the 100 servers and start the the update installs on Saturday.

Any combinations of GP settings that will do what I'm wanting?

Just to be clear that is

*Approve Updates in WSUS

*Client server downloads and installs updates

*Client server waits with pending reboot status (could be any time as long as it doesn't affect the performance of the server)

*Scheduled reboot takes place at set time on Saturday - and finishes the installs.

Windows 10/Server 2016 Windows update blues

I am seriously wondering when Microsoft fires the people responsible for the downright disaster that is Windows Update in Windows 10 and Server 2016.

I sometimes wonder where Microsoft gets their employees from ? It seems to be from some alien planet.

Prior to Win10/2016 Wu was ok, nothing more and nothing less. It was always prone to errors here and errors there. But since Windows 10/Server 2016 it is downright unusable. More often then not, I simply download from the update catalog, because the built in function is error and fail central. Failed here, failed there. Please how difficult can it be to just update the OS so we can move on.

I have maintenance weekends, and about 140 servers to do, but the time it takes to download/preparing / installing a CU on Windows server 2016 means the weekend is too short !

For instance, I have this server that is on 14393.1198, used the software center of SCCM, updates installed except for the CU which failed to install. Ok, fine, use WU, oh boy, it's stuck at preparing to install for over 40 minutes now. This is a SERVER for cyring out loud. Why does such an update take this long to install. A new OS installation is done in less than 20 minutes, yet a simple build upgrade takes ages. This is not acceptable, it takes to long, too cumbersome and too prone to errors.

When oh when do you guys scrap the system and design something that works ? And why the fuck am I presented with KB4034658 when the lastest one is KB4039396 ? What total idiocy is that ?

Fix your shit please, it is simply unworkable. I am reluctant to introduce any more server 2016 servers because of this problem.

Oh I forgot, a brand new windows server installation, windows update, after ages it claims it is ready and reboots, after reboot it failed to apply the update, and this happens more and more often. It is simply unbelieveable that after about an hour, it is still not happy and reboots the machine several times ! The reason why we have so many MS servers is at least the workload keeps running if you have several servers running the same workload, because with WU you could loose your servers for hours, even if you did a WU just three months ago.

LOL and failed again, after almost an hour, failed to install KB4034658, twice now. How CAN a simple OS upgrade fail, can someone explain. The machine has the OS, hyper-v and nothing more. It has enough memory, enough disk space, enough processing power, yet KB4034658 has now failed twice. This server is now trying to update itself for over two hours. What a nightmare WU on windows have become. Like I said, unusable, I do think there is no other way to describe this disaster.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

and despite it failed to install the update, this server is now displaying this for the past 30 minutes or so. Microsoft, wake up, this is a SERVER, we want uptime, not this shit.

WSUS clients are also downloading from Windows Update

I run WSUS on a Server 2016 Essentials box (meaning the same box is also a DC and DNS server).

Desktops in the small environment are using WSUS to get updates. However the WSUS server itself, and another Server 2016 in the environment, are sometimes reaching out directly to Windows Update, bypassing WSUS. For example, KB4509475, released two days ago, hasn't even shown up in WSUS yet but it is awaiting install on two servers. Also, sometimes the servers show a "Last Contact" of the previous day, like they don't check in as often as the desktops.

Why are the servers bypassing WSUS?

More details to follow.

the IP address in the client is"172.21.11.114",but the IP address of client is "172.254.0.2"in the WSUS,how to solve it?

Superesede updates auto removal

Hello

1- I have few questions about superseded updates:

Why WSUS does not remove the superseded updates automatically? Is it the best practice to remove them manually?

2- why when I use clean up wizard it did not delete any superseded updates?

2- When I am deleteing superseded updates manually WSUS says verify it is no longer needed by any computers. How could it be needed by any other computer when there is newer update?

The WSUS Content Directory is not accessible

We get following WSUS errors

System.net.webException: The request failed with HTTP status 503: Sevice Unavailable~~~ Failures reported during periodic health check by the WSUS server. will retry check in 1 mins

I then ran the WSUSutil.exe checkhealth command and in event viewer, get a few different errors:

WSUS Reports: Report Viewer 2008 (SP1) Redistributable or MICROSOFT REPORT VIEWER 2012 RUNTIME

Hi,

After searching for some answers I found out that people with WS 2012r2 in order to view reports on WSUS install either  Report Viewer 2008 SP1 Redistributableor MICROSOFT® REPORT VIEWER 2012 RUNTIME. I wonder in what situation would you choose either of them?
