"WSUSutil.exe Export" still creates a zero-byte .cab file - Dec 2012

I have been using WSUS to deploy patches to multiple servers and our last successful WSUS's synchronization was in Oct 2012. However, in Nov 2012, I had created a zero-byte .cab file after running the command, WSUSutil.exe export. Till now, I have tried the following methods as follows, but to no avail:

  1. Re-index and defragment WSUS 3.0 databases.
  2. Run the Server Cleanup Wizard to clean up the WSUS database.

It seems that the problem occurs due to the generated temp files, which was more than 2GB during the export process (Note: The .cab file format has a 2GB limitation).

According to Microsoft TechNet, it seems that many administrators like me are still without a solution to this problem. As such, I really look forward to Microsoft's official reply in the WSUS Website and resolution to this problem.

Since it's already shown up on windows updates, does anyone have a date when we can expect Internet Explorer 10 to appear on WSUS ?

WSUS Disconnected network

WSUS - Doesnt appear to be working..a little background on this..

1. Created a  WSUS VM using Virtual Box to download updates from Microsoft.com

2.Then followed procedure for using WSUS on a disconnected LAN per MS Article on WSUS Disconnected networks.

3.Used xcopy /J /F /E /S c:\WSUS\WSusContent\* to destination(by the way, i tried the /O switch to preserve permissions/ACL and it didnt like that).

4. Ran wsusexport on exporting server/vm (imported .cab file with content and made a log file of transaction)

5. Ran wsusimport on importing server giving it the exported(export.cab file from export server) and create an imprt.log file

6. Walked away from VM for awhile(as there is no indication other than a blinking cursor telling you that updates are being imported.

7. Came back and i noticed the VM seemed to endlessly try to start windows..killed/powered down VM.

8. Upon reboot, noticed that 1: all files in wsuscontent were there per xcopy. 2: that upon opening up the wsus console to look at all updates it reports that upon trying to approve updates, that once they are downloaded they can then be applied..

9. Assuming that my WSUS content folder is preserved and it does  show the same size in GB as my exporting server as well as size and amount of files/folders, why would they still say they needed to be downloaded?

10. I tried or am in the process of re-importing the wsus export.cab file from the export server maybe hoping this is why i am seeing the updates as not downloaded?

any thoughts/ideas on this? does this method even work? and if so, are permissions on copied wsuscontent folder/files beneath that folder, in need of their original permission sets?

Some background:

I have a WSUS server at a remote location running on 2008R2. This WSUS server has been working perfectly until 2/6/13. Doing research on this has revealed this is typically a network connection issue as the error means ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT.

However, this is not the case. If I open IE and try to browse to <servername>.<domain>.local from a client workstation I get the standard IIS7 welcome screen. I have also tried <servername>.<domain>.local/selfupdate/iuident.cab and I am able to download the iuident.cab file. So obviously the clients can reach the wsus machine.

Although I was sure it would not work since my DNS is working properly, I tried changing from the FQDN to the IP address in the Group Policy settings. As I suspected, this did not resolve the issue.

I have followed the steps in KB836941 with no success

I am really kind of lost at this point. I have other remote locations that are configured the same that are working perfectly, so that *should* rule out a parent GPO interfering with WSUS at this location.

Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Michael

  Windows 2008 r2

MDT 2012

Steps I have completed:

1.applied patch for WSUS sp 3

2. made sure folder browsing is disabled in IIS7

3. restarted server

4. looking at the wsus console I see the new computer. they are listed in "Unassigned Computers" which is correct.  These workstations have not been added to the domain yet.

Also, I am running LUP on the WSUS server

Any suggestions appreciated!

Ran solar winds WSUS diagnostic utility and received the error below

MBSA showing machine as vulnerable

Hi,
I have Windows Server 2008/Vista machine having .Net Framework 2.0 and 3.5 SP1 installed on it. On manual installation of below two updates MBSA still shows the machine as vulnerable
  1. Windows6.0-KB2742601-x64.msu
  2. Windows6.0-KB2756919-x64.msu

KB2756919 is showing as vulnerable in MBSA. On installing it again through commandline wusa.exe Windows6.0-KB2756919-x64.msu /quiet /norestart the update fails with exit code

Please note there is no problem related to antivirus. All the affected binaries are updated. The machine has also been restarted.

Thanks,

Regards,

WSUS 3.0 SP2 installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard (VM)

Group Policy Changed to direct clients to new fresh install of WSUS. Clients are populating in "Unassigned Computers" Group and moved to appropriate grouping. Neither Unassigned or custom groups are Reporting.

I have installed KB2720211 and KB2734608.

I am unable to run the  Diagnostic tool since clients are x64.

Synchronization is working on a nightly basis.

I am at a loss of what to do, this has been approx 3-4 days of no reporting. I haven't moved all machines over via changing the GPO path.

Anyone been able to fix this? need more information?

Thank you in advance.

I have a client that claims WSUS is pushing IE 10 out to desktops. Problem is that I do not see Internet Explorer 10 listed anywhere in WSUS except for a few CU's for Internet Explorer 10. So as far as I can tell WSUS is not pushing out IE 10. Is it possible it's listed under something else in WSUS? I see Internet Explorer 7,8, and 9 but nothing for 10.

WSUS syncronization - DB error

Hi all,

I have WSUS 3 SP2 on Windows 2008 R2. It configured to work with Windows Internal Database and obtain updates from remote WSUS server.

2 days ago happen an error while syncronizing with parent WSUS. Process doing up to 93% and ends with: "SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding " and than "System.Security.SecurityException: Request for principal permission failed".

Parent WSUS server works properly and syncronizing from MS WU with no errors.

I tryed to run WSUS DB Re-Index script, but it has no effect.

I use Symantec Backup Exec and have full backup of WSUS server on it. I was restored server from backup, including DB and System State, but when I start manual syncronization, I got the same errors.

However, before error, WSUS DB has size 3,9 GB. While last syncronizing, size of DB increased to 4GB. Maybe there are DB size limit in Windows Internal Database?

Please help.

WSUS reset preferences of selected products for update

Hi,

The problem appears after installing WSUS udpate KB2720211 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2720211/ru).

WSUS reset preferences of selected products for update and set "All Products".

It happens in 0.5-2 hours after I configure WSUS console "Options"-"Products and Classifications" manually or by using wizard.

It wasn't happen before  KB2720211 was installed.

This update was installed to fix problem  800B0001  while some clients hosts are trying to update.

After that WSUS is stop to synchronize with microsoft update server. (Fixes by stop "BITS service", restart "Update Service" and start again "BITS service")

OS Windows Server 2008 R2, WSUS 3.0, SP2.

How to save my preferences in product list? WSUS download updates for all products and database is too large (~300 GB).

Event ID 10032 The server is failing to download some updates

We have a SCCM 2012 SP1 hierarchy with two Software Update Points. On both SUP's we get exactly every 6 hours an error in the Application Log in Event Viewer: Event ID 10032 The server is failing to download some updates.

There are a few threads on this forum with the same error message but we don't get any other error messages. It's also not clear which updates are failing. All SCCM logs and Status Messages seems fine, it looks like a WSUS issue.

When I run manually 'wsusutil checkhealth' the same error message immediately appears in the Application Log in Event Viewer.

Is it possible to enable debug logging on the WSUS Role to get more information?

In another thread someone mentions to completely remove the SUP and WSUS roles and start over but that's a little too drastic for our environment.

Any help would be appreciated, I also posted this thread in the SCCM 2012 forum.

Hi

I‘ve installed a security update on windows server 2003.

After 8 months I’m unable to locate the installed KB in appwiz.cpl. checked in System and application event, event logs are cleared through GPO.

If I search the KB in widow’s registry I’m locate the KB number only.

However registry displays KB number but it is not telling the KB article installed.

Can we confirm using registry entry that respective was installed?

Otherwise please help me to generate an installed patch report on particular server.

Hey, all -

After removing and re-installing WSUS on a Server 2K8R2 machine, I'm now being buried in events related to the (stand-alone database engine) WSUS databases. (Unfortunately, I hadn't seen Lawrence's instructions on un-installing, although it did seem to uninstall correctly.) Full text of the events appears below. WSUS and it's prereq's are the only things installed on this machine - it's sole purpose in life is to distribute udpates to <100 machines.

I've found several forum discussions of similar errors which were resolved by setting the 'AutoClose' option of various databases to TRUE. None of these discussions involved this particular error, though, and I'm hesitant to try it in this instance without learning a little more. Does anyone have any info on resolving this issue?

Hello Members

None of our wsus servers has the product type as "Bing Desktop" under "Bing" but in internet there are some websites shows that they are able to get that product type displayed under their WSUS server.(http://windows.uwaterloo.ca/security/wsus/wsus_Products_Classes.asp)

When i set my windows 7 boxes to go direct to Microsoft update they are able to get some of the Bing Desktop product category patches like KB
2694771 http://onlinehelp.microsoft.com/en-us/bing/hh850567.aspx

Any suggestion on how i can make the wsus to get that product type?

this is the content on my WSUS servers

    • Bing
    • Bing Bar
    • Search Enhancement Pack
    • Windows Live

(Missing type "Bing Desktop")

thanks
