Powershell 3.0 patch
KB 2734608 - problem
Because we have already Win8 clients in our environment i had to try this Patch on my WSUS 3.0 SP2 (which is a SCCM 2007 R3 WSUS).
Being careful i installed and tested it first on my lab machine which is a 2003 R2 server. No problem, the installation worked and i am now able to patch Win8 clients.
After some days of testing i applied the patch on the real environment which is a dedicated 2003 R2 server for the Software update role (WSUS) and Asset Intelligence component for the SCCM 2007 R3.
There the installation failed. I have enclosed a snipplet out of the log:

A clean rollback of the patch was not successful. So the WSUS was out of order. Fortunately i was able to fix this by myself. My hope is that i get some help in aspect of this installation issue? I hope the german log is okay for you.

WSUS - various questions
Hi guyz,
I'm new on this forum and with WSUS too.
I'm making some test in my company in order to perform a full windows update management through WSUS but I have some pending questions. Before asking the community to give me a hand, here is my environment : Windows 2008 R2 for WSUS server and Windows 7
Pro for clients. I've set WSUS to run with the 4th. level (auto download and install update, scheduled every day at noon)
1. After tests on 3-4 computers, it seems that Clients are automatically downloading updates but wait for a shutdown to install updates. I've noticed that it's not possible to make and "Install and Restart" but only an "Install and Shutdown".
After a quick check on Windows forums, it seems that it's because on Windows 7 and that this option was available on XP but not anymore since Vista.
Is there any chance that it's possible to manage that because shutting down computers is not the greatest solution for some departments that need an 24/7 available remote computer ?
I also have to say that GPO are settled to prevent restart of the computer if someone is logged on.
2. If I can't change the fact that only a shutdown will proceed to the Windows Update, is it possible to send a pop-up like with the "/msg" or "/net send" command in DOS that will inform people that a shutdown will be require to perform the update on their computers.
Indeed as we planed the WSUS GPO to run at noon, people may be out for lunch and will not see the small message from the taskbar that allows the run/postpone/cancel for windows update.
Thanks.
TiGrOu.

Trying to configure WSUS 3 on Server 2012 and get Fatal error Fatal Error: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.UpdateServices.DBlayer,
We have a fresh install of Server 2012 with Sql Server 2012 and SCCM 2012 (all latest versions)
Everything works except WSUS. When it does its 'Post Installation Task' it fails every time.
Have tried all database types
It points to the log file and the only error is ...

The module was expected to contain an assembly manifest.I can't seem to find anything that addresses that particular error. I have uninstalled and tried each Database option

WSUS Updates Superseding Help.
Hello everyone, I am new to WSUS and I have just configured it as a test for Windows XP updates only. After the first sync there where 805 updates. As I was going through them, and most say there is an update that superseds this one.
My question is, can I just decline all the updates that say this or do I approve them all and let the client PC decide if it needs the earlier update?
I am a little confused at this, we want to roll this WSUS out for our organization but I don't want to hae to go through 8000 updates once i add in Windows 2003 / 2008 / 7 and vista.
What is a good way to achieve this? can the client computers decide if they need the update or not if I just approve all the updates.
I was looking around in the forums and I could not really find an answer that cleared it up for me. So hopefully someone can explain the process of approving updates and all that.
Thank you in advance.
Multiple WSUS v6 (Server 2012) sharing UNC path with the content
So, I wish to consolidate my WSUS content so it can be shared between 2 (or more) WSUS v6 servers. Historically, I've had 2-3 WSUS servers but they tend to take up a lot of HDD space with duplicate updates. I usually have 1 for Windows 7/Vista clients (users), 1 for production 2008-R2 servers, and 1 for pre-prod/development 2008-R2 servers. With most updates being downloaded for each WSUS server, the duplicates begin to add up quickly. After all, most updates that are for Win7-64-bit will also work for 2008-R2... With WSUS v6, that comes with Server 2012, it allows you to use UNC a path during setup.
I want to know if what I'm trying to do is able to be done. (I cannot be the only one running multiple WSUS servers.) I also want to know if this type of setup (using the UNC path) is to be used for what I'm trying to do.

Can the location fo the WSUSTemp folder/share be moved.
Server is Windows 2012 Essentials. WSUS role (Version: 6.2.9200.16384) is running on the WSE 2012 server. Clients are a mixture of Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows XP.
The WSUSTemp share installed by WSUS when the WSUS role on WSE2012 was activated, triggered a warning from WSE 2012 that a share was installed on the C drive and recommended that the share be moved to a non-OS drive. Can the WSUSTemp folder/share, which is located at C:\Program Files\Update Services\LogFiles\WSUSTemp by default, be safely moved to another partition?

Windows 7 not updating from SBS2008 after KB2734608
All,
I have issues with some Win7 clients not updating from an SBS2008 wsus.
I'm aware of the multiple discussion that have been going on with regard to KB2720211 & KB2734608.
What has been done so far:
- since KB2720211 caused issues I waited to deploy
- deployed KB2734608 following the article
- In the article its states: " Update 2720211 is included in this update and strengthens the WSUS communication channels." I assumed this would fix the issue.
- However, after installing KB2734608 I still have issues on "some" Win7 desktops. WinXP is ok, server 2008 & 2008R2 are also OK.
- Tried the command lines as described in KB2734608, forced WSUS connections, forced WSUS registration, nothing helps.
So what now? Should I install KB2720211after all? Even if KB2734608 has already been installed on
the server?
All help is appreciated.

34. The issue would be resolved once and for all.
Microsoft has released this update for Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) 3.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
This update strengthens the WSUS communication channels.
The Windows Update Agent (WUA) on computers that are managed by this WSUS server will be automatically upgraded as needed after you apply this update.
WSUS must be in a known, good working state for this update to work. If WSUS is configured to synchronize updates from Microsoft Update, make sure that WSUS can synchronize updates. And, clients must be able to communicate with the WSUS server.
This update lets servers that are running Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) 3.0 SP2 provide updates to computers that are running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.
Any improvements or feedback on above troubleshooting steps is surely welcome.
Thank You.

Approving only Security updates
Someone here could say anything about this:
I am approving only security updates. This could cause some kind of instability in the computers. Because for example the critical updates aren´t approved.
What kind of problem I could have ?
Some explanation about this it will be wellcome.
Thanks in Advance
Lyra
WSUS Update View
Someone here could tell me if WSUS Updates View is still receiving updates from the microsoft update site ?
I am asking because I don´t see new updates in this view for long time .

Error 0x80072EFE on Windows Server 2003 R2
So I've been struggling with this particular issue for about a week. As a new Technology Assistant with a local library one of my first challenges has been to fix servers that were not updating. One was a simple certificate issue related to Server 2000. This one is a Server 2003 R2 machine.
So some details relevant to the error...
Firewall: Nothing third party; Symantec Endpoint was installed but has since been uninstalled and wiped using their utility in an attempt to solve this error
My efforts have taken me through both Knowledge Base articles I could find related to the error. I've gone as far as re-registering the DLLs in one article, along with all of the steps found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941/en-us
No dice.
I've run the TDSS utility from Kaspersky to find rootkits that typically cause this issue. I've renamed "Software Distribution" with .old after disabling the Automatic Updates service as part of that process. I've deleted the folder entirely. At some point I updated the update agent itself as well. None of this proved successful.
Naturally it won't automatically update and I've been using the actual update website. I can get as far as clicking on Express or Custom before the update website quickly delivers the error message.
I can post Windows Update logs as needed and any other information that any helpful posters might wish from me. The entire Technology Department here is stumped and have left it to me to figure out. It was suggested to go straight here, and I used it once before when I was younger and doing some Windows Seven upgrades. Hopefully there's a solution floating around out there!
Here's hoping this was the right place to post.
Client doesn't register with New server
Test client is Windows 8
New WSUS server is Server 2012
I created a test OU and applied a GPO to point test client to the new WSUS server but it never appears in the All Computers group. I did check the registry and it seems that the GPO is pointing it to the new server. I ran the clientdiag tool and it returns:
WSUS Client Diagnostics Tool
Checking Machine State
Checking for admin rights to run tool . . . . . . . . . PASS
Automatic Updates Service is running. . . . . . . . . . PASS
Background Intelligent Transfer Service is running. . . PASS
GetFileVersion(szEngineDir,&susVersion) failed with hr=0x80070002
The system cannot find the file specified.
If I do wuauclt.exe /detectnow from an elevated command prompt I see an event 1001 containing the following:

To the untrained eye, it seems there is a fault in the server. Am I correct? Is there a tool or methodology to troubleshoot the server with?
Thanks o all who reply.
WSUS client high memory and CPU usage
Hi all,
I have AD domain that contains ~120 workstations with Windows XP installed. I implemented WSUS role on Windows 2012 server and configure GPO for workstations to connect and report to this WSUS. I'm was not approved any updates for installation.
After that, I got a complaints to workstations performance. Problem was that the wuauclt.exe eats >70% of RAM and loads >80% of CPU. This problem exists only on workstations with Windows XP and RAM less than 1GB. I was look to "windowsupdate.log" on a some workstations, but it contains no errors.
Any ideas?
WSUS not working on 8530
I cannot get WSUS to run on 8530 anymore, it was running fine and then one morning it stopped. I've uninstalled it, IIS and even remove WCP.
If I install WSUS on the default site using 80 it works but if I change it to 8530(by uninstalling and reinstalling on 8530) none of the services start anymore and MMC cannot connect to it.
If I run it on 8530 I get all kinds of errors like these. I really need to get this back on Port 8530
