WSUS Client Removal Problems

$

Good Morning,

First, a little background into software and setup.

SERVER: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard with the BDC role and WSUS 3.2.7600.226 Installed. Windows 2003 Domain, using Group Policy to push out a "WSUS Computers Policy" with the correct WSUS settings.

WORKSTATION: Windows XP Pro SP3, with latest updates, that resides in the "WSUS Computers" OU, using "WSUS Computer Policy". Firewall Disabled, Antivirus Removed for testing purposes.

This has been somewhat frustrating for me. We have recently purchased GFI MAX Remote Management and would like to use this to keep track and authorize windows updates, not to mention numerous other features. I would like to move away from WSUS. WSUS is currently pushing out updates to my workstations and does not have a problem doing so, I am just looking for a more centralized solution for pushing updates and patches to not only Windows, but to 3rd party applications without breaking the bank.

Now, the problem I am having is that when I remove the test computer from the "WSUS Computers" OU and place it in "Computers" OU to just pull the Default Domain Policy, I am not able to run windows updates from the default microsoft updates site. In my Default Domain Policy I do not have Windows Updates configured, they are set to the default "Not Configured" option. I have tried creating a test policy to see if I just need to push a clean policy and still unable to receive updates. I can provide logs if need be, the error I get when trying to run windows updates after removing the computer from the OU is:

"Error number: 0x80190193"

Any help would be greatly apprciated. Thank You in advance.

Jon

KB2919355 (8.1. update 1) breaks WSUS clients

I have a Server2012R2 hyper-v test system I use to spin up dev VM's. I decided to build a new template VM with KB2919355 (81. Update 1) installed. I patch using a WSUS instance on a physical server. All went well until I installed Update 1. When I installed the update I lost WSUS connectivity.

Any attempt to check gets an immediate failure with code 80072f8f. This usually indicates that there is a time problem between the machines. I have verified that the times are not adrift and synchronised both client and server with a geophrapically close publicly available ntp server. The times on the machines do not differ in any meaningful way. I believe that KB2919355 introduces this problem.

I built another template VM to test this issue and I have proven that contact with the WSUS server fails immediately after the installation of KB2919355 and is restored by uninstallation.

Can anyone confirm this is a bug? Can you suggest a way to resolve it without uninstalling the update? If this can be confirmed and not resolved can someone tell me how best to report this to get it investigated. I can provide any additional information you need, just ask.

The log of the failure follows for completeness but I don't believe it is very useful.

Deploying WSUS Server 2012

Hi,

I have two separate domains without trust relationship and couple Windows 2003 systems on a workgroup.  I am planning to setup WSUS on Windows 2012 standard server to provide updates for both domains and workgroup systems.  Can I setup WSUS on a workgroup and point both domains and workgroup systems via registry?  Is that going to create an issue to update both domains and workgroup systems? Is this the right setups below to point systems via registry?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate:

"TargetGroupEnabled"=dword:00000001 "TargetGroup"="Managed Workgroup" "ElevateNonAdmins"=dword:00000000 "WUServer"="http://wsus1.domain.com""WUStatusServer"=http://wsus1.domain.com

Thanks

Required patches not showing in SCCM report, its all ways showing need 0 patches.

Hi,

Can any only please help me on this issue.

We have a critical server and it is added in SCCM phase for server patching.

But now the issue is, In SCCM maintenace window report, its always showing need 0 patches and its no required patches displayed.

No issue with WMI also, logs shows scan process completed successfully.

If it is the issue with WSUS client agent, can any only please provide me the steps to rebuild WSUS client agent or please suggest me the solution for to fix this issue.

Thanks in advance,

Manivel M

Hotfix not applicable

Hi all

I put a request through for hotfix kb2661001 but when I try to apply it to my test server (Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1) I receive the "Update is not applicable to your computer" error. I have double-checked we do not already have it installed. Any possible cause for this?

Thanks

Non-domain computer WSUS entries keep getting reset

We have a non-domain member laptop. So it does not get domain GPOs, confirmed by RSOP. Somewhere along the line someone entered the wrong WSUS server into gpedit.msc for the WUSERVER and WUSTATUSSERVER: http://server02:80. Whenver I try to change it to the correct server (http://server01:8530) using gpedit.msc, something changes it back to server02. I searched the entire registry and can't find where it's set other than the standard WUSERVER and WUSTATUSSERVER locations. Where else could this value be stored and how to I get this laptop to check in with the proper WSUS server?

Hi,

we will migrate the Infrasctructur on a remote location to Windows Server 2012. The Master WSUS Server is a WSUS3 installed on Windows Server 2008.

It is possible to connect a WSUS4 downstream Server to a WSUS3 upstream Server? The clients in the remote lokation will connect the WSUS4 downstream Server....

Regards, Michael

Can you deploy 3rd party root CA with WSUS?

WSUS hangs on Cleanup wizard for Unused Updates, then disconnects from console.

I am running WSUS 3.0 SP1 on Windows 2003 and recently have found that running the Cleanup Wizard works with all of the selectable options except the "Unused Updates" option. It hangs about 1\2 way through and then disconnects from the console. Up until now it has worked.
I am using the Windows Internal Database and the size of the MDF is 3193024kb.
Everything other than this wizard is working fine. Please help.

KB2524478 Detected As Not Applicable

Microsoft recently released KB2524478 (The network location profile changes from "Domain" to "Public" in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2) to WSUS.  Neither of my two WSUS instances detects any of my Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 systems as needing the update, though (status = Not Applicable).  Everything looks good in WSUS (the update is not declined); I've verified that the files in the KB are newer versions than the ones my servers; and I successfully downloaded the update from the Microsoft Download Center and manually installed it (no errors or other statements that it wasn't applicable).  There are no special requirements listed in the KB article, so I can't figure out why WSUS thinks my servers don't need the update.  Is there something I'm missing?

Below is 30 minutes worth of output from WindowsUpdate.log after stopping and restarting the Windows Update agent service on one of my servers and then doing a wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow.  Looks normal to me.

Push urgent update via WSUS?

Hello,

I am using WSUS 2012 and have a couple of questions.  We have created multiple Computer Groups in the WSUS console to manage the different departments and regional offices and it is working great,wih our GPOs.  Once we approve the updates then afer a couple of days they will have them.

1.) If we need to push an urgent update out or remove one very quickly how can we do this?

2.) What is the best way to show what Computer groups we have approve updates on?

Thanks

Language packs: Everything's at 99%

Hi,

I've got WSUS on Server 2012 R2 and 10 Server 2012 R2 servers.

WSUS is quite happily installing all the patches, but they're all stuck at 99% compliance. They're all reporting back that the UK language pack KB2839636 isn't installed.

They all have English-UK set as their default language and display language. KB2839636 doesn't appear in Windows Update.

How can I get this update installed and get 100%?

P.S. I hate language packs :)

Gary

Identify New Products Recently Added

Occasionally I'll receive a notice in WSUS that new products have been added, but they aren't flagged in any way when searching through the several-hundred-item-long list of products. Anyone know of a way to identify the newly added products?

Pushing IE + Cumulative Update

I have my PC's set to install updates every day at 1:00 AM from WSUS and automatically reboot.  Everything about that works.  I want to push out IE 10, which also works fine.  But I would like to install the latest Cumulative Update to 10 after the initial install is done so that the PC is ready with IE 10 and the CU all at once instead of waiting until the next update window at 1 AM the next day.  Basically I want to avoid having the GA version running for a day before the CU is installed.  And I need it to all be done by start of business.  So, ideally it would go:

  1. Install IE 10
  2. Reboot
  3. Check for updates, detect the CU as needed and install it
  4. Reboot

I have a deadline set on the CU so that as soon as a machine checks in and finds it, it will install it.  That gets me partway there, but the problem I have is that #3 doesn't happen after the first reboot.  I do not have the detection frequency set through GPO, so it's the default of every 22 hours.  Is that my issue?  I would have thought that it would check in when the service starts up after a reboot regardless of the detection interval setting, but that doesn't seem to be the case.  So I could change the interval to every hour, but I'm a little hesitant to do that for performance reasons.

Grab Superseded updates from WSUS

Hey,

I had previously asked about how WSUS deployed updates to end clients. I was able to figure this out doing some research and scanning these forums.

Now the thing is the server behind our TMG which has no access to the internet and which I was assuming it would grab the updates from our WSUS server instead of WU since i made the change on our WSUS server.

Thing is its able to determine right away the list of updates it needs ("Check for updates", succeeds almost instantly and uses netstat can see the connection to WSUS as established) However whenever I click install updates I once again see attempts to connect to internet based WU servers.

My guess is since I selected to clear the server (Clear all old stale data, including no longer needed updates. or updates older than 30 days) even though it was never set to hold updates locally so this was kind of pointless.

The things is that server hadn't had updates installed on it since over a year ago (18/4/13). When I check the status of the listed updates on WSUS, the reports says failed on this one server...

I was hopin thered be an option on WSUS once the update was located using search to download a local copy, this does not seem to be the case.

Any thoughts or suggestions on how I can grab these updates from WSUS, or get WSUS to grab them from WU?

Updates in question are: 2798897
                                        2840631
                                        2833946
                                        2804579

                                        2736422
                                        2832414

Thanks!

Cannot retrieve the CVE-ID for the updates.

I am writing the code using windows update agent apis, i am getting all the information except for the CVE-ID's associated with that update. I know that update type can be bundle, i have also tries to extract the updates for the individual updates in the bundle, but i am unable to get the CVE-ID's.
I have tried using my code, to get the updates from the microsoft server and the locan WSUS, but in both the cases i am unable to get the CVE_ID's.

Following is the code snippet to get the cveIds;

hrRes = pIUpdate2->get_CveIDs(&pIStrCollCveIds);
if (FAILED(hrRes))
{
pIUpdate2->Release();
return FALSE;
}

hrRes = pIStrCollCveIds->get_Count(&lCount);
if (FAILED(hrRes))
{
pIUpdate2->Release();
pIStrCollCveIds->Release();

return FALSE;
}

I get lCount as 0, every time.
