Allowing WSUS to communicate with Microsoft update source through internet firewall

Hello

I am in the process of setting up a new WSUS on Windows Server 2012 R2 to synchronise with Microsoft update on the internet. I want to be as granular as possible to only allow what is required minimally in order to achieve this.

I found contradicting information from online resources indicating which ports and protocols WSUS uses to communicate with Microsft update for synchronizing updates:

1.) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh852346.aspx at point 3.1.1 says: "To obtain updates from Microsoft Update, the WSUS server uses port443 for HTTPS protocol." This suggests HTTPS (443) only.

2.) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb693717.aspx atTo configure the firewall for software updates, says: "Configure the firewall to allow communication for the HTTP and HTTPS ports used by the WSUS server. By default, a WSUS server that is configured for the default Web site uses port 80 for HTTP and port 443 for HTTPS". This suggests HTTPS (443) as well as HTTP (80).

3.) http://www.lucianolima.org/how-to-configure-wsus-server-4-0-in-windows-server-2012/ atConfiguring the Firewall, says: "If there is a corporate firewall between WSUS and the Internet, you may need to configure your firewall to ensure that WSUS can obtain updates. To obtain updates from Microsoft Update, the WSUS server uses port 8530 for HTTP protocol and port 443 for HTTPSprotocol. These options are not configurable." This suggests HTTPS (443) as well as HTTP (8530).

So which is it? HTTPS (443) only/and/or HTTP (80) only/and/orHTTP (8530)?

Also, as I already mentioned that if want to be as granular as possible with the access I will be allowing through our internet firewall, I tried to restrict the destination to the URLs documented on these above links:http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com;http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com;https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com;http://*.update.microsoft.com; https://*.update.microsoft.com; http://*.windowsupdate.com;http://download.windowsupdate.com;http://download.microsoft.com; http://*.download.windowsupdate.com; http://wustat.windows.com;http://ntservicepack.microsoft.com on both HTTPS en HTTP protocols respectively, yet the synchronization failed due to not being able to connect to host 134.170.115.62:443. I tried to determine what the hostname is for the IP 134.170.115.62 though it does not have a PTR record for a reverse lookup. I am assuming this IP does not form part of these URL sets I granularly defined in the allowed destination lists on the firewall? Any idea what this IP is for?

Cannot install updates after new Windows Update Agent - Code 80246002

Good morning,

I just installed the new Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320 on 2 Server 2008 R2 physical machines, one being a Domain Controller and one being a Terminal Server. Following this, I have attempted to check for updates.

When the check is performed, I receive the error code almost instantly. I have followed the advise in the article here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958056 but this has made no difference.

Any assistance on this issue would be appreciated.

Kind regards,

AE

It appears that on 8/1/14 Windows update agent 7.6.7600.320 was installed on the servers that will no longer update. Do you have any recommendations on how to fix this as I can not update these servers  I could not send the entire log

Getting past WSUS Cleanup Wizard time out, removing unnecessary updates.

Standard problem with WSUS Cleanup Wizard timing out without removing any unnecessary updates. SBS2K8. WSUS 3. 6000+ unnecessary updates awaiting approval. Huge database. Unresponsive SQL server. Lot of people have this problem:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/9724778f-c1a0-4d24-82e4-8b2d054257d6/wsus-hangs-on-cleanup-wizard-for-unused-updates-then-disconnects-from-console?forum=winserverwsus

Drives are regularly defragged in the background. Not gonna shut down the server and have down time just to fix this.

Tried the reindexing script from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd939795(WS.10).aspx
, (don't copy the command line, it has weird characters in it, just type it in manually.) and it completes but it didn't improve anything.

Found this:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and it also times out.

Found this comment:
For anyone who is getting Timeout Expired with obsolete updates. I have a solution! Use server name : "
\\.\pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\sql\query
" to connect with SQL managment studio. Once connected manually run "
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup
". This will return a list of obsolete ID's. For each one run "
exec spDeleteUpdate @localUpdateID=000000
", where 000000 is the ID. For myself I found the first ID in the list took a full 37 minutes to delete and then after that I could run the cleanup through the GUI as per usual.

Found that you actually need to do:
USE SUSDB
GO
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup

And to connect in the first place, I had to hit Options, and select named pipe from the middle pull down.

First delete took 6 minutes and memory has spiked up to almost 15GB in use out of 16GB physical. But the WSUS console (Update Services) still shows the same number of old updates. Failure? I don't think so: I'm running the cleanup wizard again and so far it isn't timing out... It has run over night, and has made some progress; the bar has moved perhaps 5%.

So... My take is that the SQL server causes this problem when there is to much data, because the indexes are poorly designed (not because the indexes need to be re-indexed) causing the first query to time out, which causes the cleanup to fail. Once you get past that first deletion, and have everything loaded into memory, the cleanup tool can stay connected long enough to delete each unneeded update.

Next step will be to find a command line method, such as:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and put it into the task scheduler like Microsoft should have done at the beginning to keep this from getting out of hand.

P.S. Lawrence Garvin, please do NOT reply to this; I have no need of your arrogance.

Bug: halt when deleting unneeded update files

If WSUS installed on a heavy IO loaded harddrive (LUN) of a VM, when deleting unneeded update files by Server Cleanup Wizard, MMC node may halt.

Step to repo:

1 Open Update Services MMC.
2 Click Options from the left panel.
3 Select Server Cleanup Wizard from the right.
4 Press Next.
MMC node MAY(only when lots of files need to be deleted) be prompted to be reset when deleting unneeded files if it's running longer than usual. Re-open Update Services MMC will fix it. But it will be appeared again another day when many unneeded files exist.

Eternal Snow

New Installation Failing w/Error: The update could not be found.

On a new 2008 R2 server (Standard), using the Add Roles Wizard, I tried adding WSUS but it fails with "The update cound not be found. There may be a network connection issue. Click here for more information."

Clicking there takes me to the "Resolving WSUS issues" pages with refereces to Microsoft. The first is the most relevent:
"If you receive the message “The update could not be found. There may be a network connection issue.” when you try to install WSUS, refer to the information in the Network and Sharing Center Troubleshooting Guide."

Clicking on the link to the "Network and Sharing Center Troubleshooting Guide http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=140135" takes me there (so there are no connectivity issues) but nothing seems to apply to my issue. I can browse the internet just fine and have even went in and manually installed various required components like IIS, .NET Framework 3.5.1, and Windows Internal Database but still no luck. I even downloaded the file "WSUS30-KB972455-x64" and tried running that without success. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

Problems with WSUS over VPN

A while back we started having trouble with our WSUS server communicating with our laptops over our VPN. We've been just running updates manually, but it's become a priority to find out what the issue is so that we can resume using it to deploy other software packages.

We're getting the following in our WindowsUpdate.log:

Both of the above were run without any firewall at all. For some reason it appears as though (in the log anyway) it's trying to use a proxy. (when it shouldn't)

Updates work perfectly when plugged into our network, and while they're on the VPN they have access to all network resources. (mapped drives, etc)

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm afraid this one has me stumped.

I want to know how method of move "A'" to "B'", immediately(command line? GUI work?). Please tell me.

Windows\SoftwareDistribution Folder Cleanup Automation

Hi -

I have a number of machines with a bloated Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder.  I usually address this by:

  1. Stopping the Automatic Updates service.
  2. Deleting the Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder.
  3. Restarting the Automatic Updates service.

I'm considering using a computer startup script to perform this task automatically.  Does anyone have a more elegant method of automating this task?

Thanks in advance for your input.

When will wsusscn2.cab include the newly released update (KB2993651) from the revised MS14-0045 bulletin?

We use a third party updating service in an offline environment. This service uses the offline update scanner file wsusscn2.cab. Microsoft released a new update (KB2993651) for MS14-045 on 8/27/2014). I was expecting wsusscn2.cab to have this update included by now. Hopefully it will be updated before the September release. Any information is appreciated.  Thanks.

Rebuild of WSUS failed due to Reset Process in Progress

I was trying to move WSUS_Database from one drive to another. I have internal database not SQLServer express on server.

The WSUSUtil movecontent did not work because WSUSUtil is not installed ion the server (admins console is). I tried to delete database by selecting no content on server in files and locations. That started a reconfiguration that did not end. I then removed the WSUS role and re-installed (after reboot). Now I get post configuration failure:

Generation of encryption key to save to the database failed. Error=System.InvalidOperationException: Cannot save configuration because the server is still processing a previous configuration change. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: spSetConfiguration was called while a Reset Process was Needed/InProgress cannot change Configuration at this time

StartServer encountered errors. Exception=Cannot save configuration because the server is still processing a previous configuration change. Microsoft.UpdateServices.Administration.CommandException: Failed to start and configure the WSUS service

How can I get this working and clear the pending process?

WSUS Connection Error when trying to view all updates

Hello,

ive recently started getting Error: Connection Error when trying to view all updates within WSUS. and cannot work out how to resolve this.

to give some more information

i have x2 WSUS servers (1 is setup as a downstream server and doesnt recieve the error). the main server is the one in question. i am able to view computer information and how many updates are needed etc, i dont get any sync issues reported. reports are sent out daily and new updates sync with both servers when available. i only receive the error when i try to view anything within the Updates section. which is what i need in order to approve and assign any new updates that are available.

when i check the event log, the following event is listed

Event 7032

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.

Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.

i have checked services and restarted them, plus re-booted the server all with no joy

Help!!

thanks in advance

WSUS 3.0 SP2 on Server 2k8 R2 getting Error 364 and 10032

This is a FRESH installation of Server 2008 R2, installed with SP1 (no updates applied from Windows Update - I want this to happen via WSUS)

WSUS 3.0 SP2 FRESH installation from standalone installer.

Installed KB2720211 to correct the issue of clients being unable to communicate with WSUS server.

WSUS installs fine, synchronizes fine, but a number of updates showing "The Microsoft Software License Terms for this update failed to download"

Many other updates report the download failed with REASON: HTTP 404 The requested URL does not exist on the server.

Throughout the last 2 days of researching and investigating these particular errors, I have performed the following steps:

Verify correct permissions for the drive and folders - no change

wsusutil reset - no change

wsusutil checkhealth - Reports WSUS working correctly

Uninstalled and reinstalled WSUS 3.0 in full

Removed server from any and all firewall and ISA devices, turned off the internal Windows Firewall completely - no change

Reinstalled Server 2008R2 again from scratch, installed WSUS again from scratch - no change

WSUS and Server 2008R2 configurations are identical to a previous installation that was working perfectly, and is NOT using a proxy.

WSUS : Bundle update hierarchy in IUpdate.

As Windows update details are defined by IUpdate interface, it has different properties about an update.

Till now, I saw that bundled update is present at most 1st level only in an update(IUpdate). Does anyone know about this bundle structure that at which level one bundle-update can have update?

Win2k8R2 SP1 installer slipstream with post SP1 patches

$

I'm looking to slipstream a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 installer with all available post-patches released by Microsoft, so I can then deploy that installer package across a number of servers that do not yet have SP1 installed in my company environment.

Through some research I've already done on the internet, all I can find are instructions on how to slipstream SP1 into a Windows Server 2008 R2 ISO/media which is not what I need/intend to do.

If anyone has a script or instructions on how to slipstream an SP1 installer itself with post SP1 patches, I'd appreciate the assistance

For clarification, the servers in question are in the following situation:

- They are located in a DMZ

- No internet access for the servers exists

- Servers are standalone servers, NOT domain members

- WSUS and SCCM is not in existence in their DMZ environment

A colleague earlier this year manually installed SP1 on a Win2k8R2 server, and after rebooting he then proceed to manually install about 150-200 post SP1 patches on the server without reboots..... once he finished the installs he then rebooted the server, resulting in an unrecoverable BSOD so the server had to be rebuilt..

Note - This was originally raised on the following Security forum thread, but under recommendation I'm re-submitting under the Deployment forum as well

Cannot install updates after new Windows Update Agent - Code 80246002

$

Good morning,

I just installed the new Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320 on 2 Server 2008 R2 physical machines, one being a Domain Controller and one being a Terminal Server. Following this, I have attempted to check for updates.

When the check is performed, I receive the error code almost instantly. I have followed the advise in the article here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958056 but this has made no difference.

Any assistance on this issue would be appreciated.

Kind regards,

AE
