Greetings,

I had to redo my WSUS server and thought all was working correctly till I tried to sync and the sync failed.

I went to the

C:\Program Files\Update Services\LogFiles and opened up the SoftwareDistribution log file

and started to look at the logs.

well here is the error I am unable to find a solid answer for.

Can not change windows update time on client PC.

Hello

Sorry to disturb you. I have a WSUS installed on my server. In WSUS Group policy the scheduled installed day set to - every day, and install time to 3AM, and it set to Auto download and schedule the install. There are couple PC attached to server all of them running Windows 7. On some machine if I go to Windows Update change settings it shows time for update - Every day at 3AM. But on two PC it is set to Everyday at 10AM. How to change it?

Thank you very much in advance

Products and Classifications and detection

Hello,

Seeking verification - I have selected Critical, Security, Service Packs and Updates classifications to synchronize. I have not selected Visual Basic Studio or asp.net as products. If there is a critical patch for Visual Basic or asp.net, it will it not be detected for a system which runs these products, correct?

Thanks

i would like to automate install updates and restart for the servers on scheduled time (or initiate manually for all/groups) that are on GPO option 3 (download updates but let me install).

I found couple of discussions from year 2010 and there is a success after many suggestions. But it is a bit time consuming to follow all this. So, may there is a definite step by step guide.

Thanks

Getting past WSUS Cleanup Wizard time out, removing unnecessary updates.

Standard problem with WSUS Cleanup Wizard timing out without removing any unnecessary updates. SBS2K8. WSUS 3. 6000+ unnecessary updates awaiting approval. Huge database. Unresponsive SQL server. Lot of people have this problem:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/9724778f-c1a0-4d24-82e4-8b2d054257d6/wsus-hangs-on-cleanup-wizard-for-unused-updates-then-disconnects-from-console?forum=winserverwsus

Drives are regularly defragged in the background. Not gonna shut down the server and have down time just to fix this.

Tried the reindexing script from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd939795(WS.10).aspx
, (don't copy the command line, it has weird characters in it, just type it in manually.) and it completes but it didn't improve anything.

Found this:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and it also times out.

Found this comment:
For anyone who is getting Timeout Expired with obsolete updates. I have a solution! Use server name : "
\\.\pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\sql\query
" to connect with SQL managment studio. Once connected manually run "
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup
". This will return a list of obsolete ID's. For each one run "
exec spDeleteUpdate @localUpdateID=000000
", where 000000 is the ID. For myself I found the first ID in the list took a full 37 minutes to delete and then after that I could run the cleanup through the GUI as per usual.

by jjdacl on Apr 23 at 12:55 PM

Found that you actually need to do:
USE SUSDB
GO
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup

And to connect in the first place, I had to hit Options, and select named pipe from the middle pull down.

First delete took 6 minutes and memory has spiked up to almost 15GB in use out of 16GB physical. But the WSUS console (Update Services) still shows the same number of old updates. Failure? I don't think so: I'm running the cleanup wizard again and so far it isn't timing out... It has run over night, and has made some progress; the bar has moved perhaps 5%.

So... My take is that the SQL server causes this problem when there is to much data, because the indexes are poorly designed (not because the indexes need to be re-indexed) causing the first query to time out, which causes the cleanup to fail. Once you get past that first deletion, and have everything loaded into memory, the cleanup tool can stay connected long enough to delete each unneeded update.

Next step will be to find a command line method, such as:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and put it into the task scheduler like Microsoft should have done at the beginning to keep this from getting out of hand.

P.S. Lawrence Garvin, please do NOT reply to this; I have no need of your arrogance.

WSUS patch status information not rolling up from Downstream to Upstream

$

We have a Windows 2008 R2 WSUS server running WSUS 3.2.7600.274

We have a Downstream replica also Windows 2008 R2 WSUS server running WSUS 3.2.7600.274

At some stage the Patch Needed status stopped rolling up from the downstream to the upstream server. ie the needed/installed/error counts can all be seen on the downstream replica however on the upstream they all show as 0 and the updates with no status is the total number of patches available.

After days of troubleshooting. We re-installed WSUS on both the upstream and downstream and let the agents report in again and the issue was resolved.

Less that 30 days later the issue has started occurring again. Needed counts are correct on the downstream replica however this is not replicating up to the upstream. New agents that report in show "no status" for all patches, and all agents show 'no Status" for any new patches.

The downstream server has now been deleted from the upstreams "Downstream Servers" section, forcing all machines to be removed from the Upstream console and then re-sync the downstream again. Now all machines show no status for all patches.

  • The WSUS instances are at the same version.
  • The time is within 1 minute of each other on downstream and upstream.
  • the rollup reporting is enabled on the upstream.

Currently we have the support teams using the downstream for reporting and approving patches on the upstream. Not ideal.

WSUS - EXE Downloads Fail

Server 2012 R2 Datacenter

I just recently got WSUS installed and thought it was working properly - numerous computers have successfully downloaded and installed updates over the past couple weeks.  But I've discovered over 60 computers have failed to install the April Malicious Software Removal Tool - the only update I had set to be automatically approved.

After digging, I found this in the WindowsUpdate.log file on one of the clients:

I go into IIS and look at the ISAPI and CGI Restrictions, and there's no entry there for CGI-exe.  I found CGI-exe in Handler Mappings, set to Disabled.  I enabled it by by selecting it and going to Edit Feature Permissions, then checking Execute.  But that made no difference; I get the same error when accessing that URL, and it's still not listed in the ISAPI and CGI Restrictions.  I went ahead and manually added it...  Path %windir%\System32\inetsrv\cgi.dll, Description CGI-exe, Allow checked.  No change.

It would seem that something has changed on the server, since this worked before - but I haven't been able to determine what changed.  Any suggestions on further troubleshooting?  It seems to be IIS related.  A coworker had previously attempted (and failed) to get Systems Center running on this server in the past, I don't know if that might have anything to do with it.

Post install problem. Changes to the state or options of DB SUSDB can't be made at this time. DB Is in single-user mode.

Hi,

Have you ever come across this problem before.

Changes to the state or options of DB SUSDB can't be made at this time. DB Is in single-user mode and a user is currently connected to it.

It's preventing the post WSUS installation task from completing.

I opted to use the WID Database option and it created the SUSDB.

How can I resolve it?

Thanks

WSUS on windows server 2008 R2 has recently stopped working.

First comes up with "Snap in not responding" while stil "expanding" then fails and shows "Error: Connection Error"

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.

This is the message the copies to clipboard
Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.

The WSUS administration console has encountered an unexpected error. This may be a transient error; try restarting the administration console. If this error persists,

Try removing the persisted preferences for the console by deleting the wsus file under %appdata%\Microsoft\MMC\.

I have configured a new WSUS server in my domain environment consist of around 1000 computers, I have approved all security updates and most of them are updated in client machines. but some updates are missing in client machines when checked I found that all missing updates were I have already approved for client machines.

Please give guidance to complete all security update in client machines.

WSUS - Clients stopped reporting on downstream replicas

Just looking for some advice on what could be wrong here.

Some of our downstream WSUS replicas have stopped 'receiving' updates from machines on the network.  Below is an example of one group affected.  In this case WSUS is on a 2003 server but there is 1 instance where there is a 2008 R2 replica with the exact same problem.

<image can't be posted until account is verified>

Image was of the WSUS console with machines in the group stuck on 'Last Status Report' on '15/04/2015'.  Once account is verified, will post.

There doesn't seem to be a common denominator between the replicas that do work and those that don't.

WSUS v3.2.7600.256
According to Add or Remove Programs, the following hotfixes are installed:
KB2720211
KB2734608

There are no client connectivity issues, one of the machines is actually the WSUS server itself (so local).  The others are all on the same local LAN

Machines are pointed to the correct WSUS server via GPO and worked up until the 15th.

The only thing that stands out in the WindowsUpdate.log on each machine is this:

2015-04-20    10:49:22:094     900    15f0    Report    REPORT EVENT: {3B186FC1-29B3-4D3E-800E-19BF108CE254}    2015-04-20 10:40:45:606+0200    1   202    102    {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}    0    0    AutomaticUpdates    Success    Content Install    Reboot completed.

2015-04-20    10:49:22:094     900    15f0    Report    WARNING: Reporter failed to upload events with hr = 80240004.

I'm not convinced the error is totally relevant to the issue.

I have searched through many online posts but haven't found an answer that works.

Can anyone point me in the right direction or aware of what could be the problem?

Thanks

-- Edit for Further Info --

These are not new replicas and definitely have been working up until recently.  All 'broken' replicas seemed to stop on the same day.

People,

I'd like to bring up the version of my WSUS up to the latest, so which update that I should be installing ?

My current version is:

From the Server MMC console

Update Services
Microsoft Corporation
Version: 3.2.7600.226

From the Windows 8.1 console

Update Services
Microsoft Corporation
Version: 6.3.9600.16384

/* Server Support Specialist */

Servers restart after getting updated - Schedule the restart

I currently have a GPO deployed in our AD for applying updates using WSUS (on version 3.2).  In my GPO, under Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Windows Update I have the following settings:

Allow Automatic Updates immediate installation Enabled
Allow non-administrators to receive update notifications Enabled
Automatic Updates detection frequency Enabled
Check for updates at the following
interval (hours):  22

Configure Automatic Updates Enabled
Configure automatic updating: 4 - Auto download and schedule the install
The following settings are only required
and applicable if 4 is selected.
Scheduled install day:  0 - Every day
Scheduled install time: 13:00

Do not display 'Install Updates and Shut Down' option in Shut Down Windows dialog box Disabled
No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations Enabled
Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations Enabled
Wait the following period before
prompting again with a scheduled
restart (minutes):  1440

Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled installations Enabled
Wait after system
startup (minutes):  10

Specify intranet Microsoft update service location Enabled
Set the intranet update service for detecting updates: http://srv-wsus1
Set the intranet statistics server: http://srv-wsus1
(example: http://IntranetUpd01)

Turn on recommended updates via Automatic Updates

I want to specify restart times after update installations, for example I want to restart servers only Thursdays 10:00 PM. how should I change the settings?

Or if its not possible at least schedule to restart on a specific time like every day 10:00 PM not on update installation time. (even despite wsus deadline)

Thanks in advance

I have a small handful of PCs in my office that were recently upgraded from Office 2010 to Office 2013.  2010 was uninstalled then 2013 was installed.

It has been weeks since this update and my WSUS server is still stating these PC's have various Office 2010 updates that need to be installed.

Why is this?  These PCs do not have Office 2010 installed.

Dear all,

we are experiencing trouble with one WSUS client which is running on Windows server 2012 and WUAgent is at version 7.8.9200.17185. This server was installed by fresh installation (no cloned). This server is presented at WSUS admin console but is at status:  "Not reported yet". We are not able to persuade this client to report to WSUS server.

We went through a lot of articles where similar issues was described but sofar no solution was found.

What we did already:

Remove wsus client from Admin console, restart WSUS client OS and WSUS server as well. Restart WUAUSERV on client, wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow, wuauclt /reportnow. We Reseted Windows update settings on client according article:

Article ID: 971058

We ran Solarwinds diagnostic tool for WSUS Agent but no errors found. We captured communication between client and wsus server via Wireshark as well. Devices communicate properly and all required ports are opened. We checked windowsupdatelog, applog on server and client as well.

There is a copy of windows update log from client:

2015-04-20 11:03:09:976  860 12c8 WS FATAL: OnCallFailure(hrCall, m_error) failed with hr=0x80240439

2015-04-20 11:03:09:976  860 12c8 WS WARNING: Nws Failure: errorCode=0x803d0000

2015-04-20 11:03:09:976  860 12c8 Report WARNING: Failed to upload events to the server with hr = 80240439.
2015-04-20 11:03:09:976  860 12c8 Report WARNING: Reporter failed to upload events with hr = 80240439.

Do you anybody have idea how to solve this issue please? Any help or suggestion will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance
