WSUS Cleanup

Hi, I've been using the excellent articles on Technet to cleanup a SBS 2011 WSUS due to the amount of space it was consuming.  In the WSUS console I showed the “Supersedence” column and sorted on it, delined all the updates that were 2nd level or below and the “Needed” count is zero and the “Installed / Not Applicable” value is 100%.  It has gone well so far.  However, as I get near the bottom of the list I'm finding updates that do not have any supersedence symbol next to them.  As it is sorted on this column with top-level at the top can I safely assume these are 2nd level or lower and decline them?

Why can't I install WSUS updates on my Essentials server?

I have a simple setup. I have a Windows 2012 R2 Essentials server (Server A) which has the WSUS role enabled. It is syncing the updates, and when I approve them, the client machines are able to install them. However, on the Essentials server itself, I find no way to install updates. Every day the health report says that there are "missing updates" on the Essentials server and I see that also in the WSUS admin tool. But nowhere do I get a prompt to install updates. Note that I only just recently migrated from SBS 2008, so not entirely familiar with 2012 R2 Essentials. I looked all over the forums and other online resources, and have not found anything that has helped to resolve this issue. Note that the same is true for the only other server on the network, a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (Server B). Both Server A and Server B are virtual machines running on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard host.  Not sure if that makes a difference with this issue.  But all machines on the domain are getting updates and able to install them.  Note that all the client machines are Windows 7 SP1.  Except for these two servers.  Any clues on how to resolve this would be much appreciated.

WSUS downstream autonymous server - downloading upstream updates from central products and classifications

Our organisation has had up until recently a 'central' WSUS server which downloads updates directly from Microsoft. Beneath this are many WSUS servers in replica mode.

We now have a requirement to point the 'central' server to a new internal WSUS source, which is taking over this role.

I am now wondering if the by-design behaviour that we now cannot control the Products and Classifications means that we will now automatically download ALL potentialadditional updates for these products. Or will these not download unless these include updates that we have a approval rule for?

Thanks

Nick

WSUS Pool crash (w3wp.exe)

Hey guys,

we are having a strange issue with our SCCM 2012 / WSUS Server. The Server is W2k8R2 and we are installing Wsus 3.0 SP2.

Since Friday everything was working (Whole SCCM2012 with WSUS SUP installed). Then on Friday something happened and WSUS is no longer working. We already reinstalled it several times. But suddenly after the WSUS installation (tried .exe and Add or remove features) it is already broken.

- The Console only shows "Service unavailable" with a Button Reset Server Node

- All Services a Running

- When trying to open The WSUS Console the IIS Application Pool "Wsus Pool" is stopped

Here are some Event Logs:

WSUS server - moving from downstream autonymous to update from Microsoft

I was wondering how I could possibly transfer all my computer groups / approval rules to another enterprise WSUS server.

At present a central in-house server is the sole recipient of all external Microsoft updates. But it would be nice to have a secondary (standby) server, but one which also had all the same (or inherited) groups etc.

Would it be possible to build a secondary WSUS server, point it to the 'central' server and synchronise all the update, groups rules - then point it back to Microsoft for all ongoing patches. Would the groups etc be retained or will they get cleaed when a new external source is set?

Thanks

Newly installed WSUS - Win server 2012 (AD and GPM on 2003)

Hi everyone, i have installed an Win 2012 Server VM with IIS + WSUS so we could manage the updates for >900 Machines over our network environment.

I'm coming across some issues, after reading documentation and having spend some time searching about it, im getting a bit disappointed because i can't fix it.

So to start i have configured everything on WSUS and the machines are appearing properly, The GPO is working as intended because i have forced it into a GPO and it gets all the settings correctly..

Moving on, i have used the Solarwinds tool (sorry about ad) and i have come across 2 errors which i cant understand them really.

its about the content (Error:Forbiden - Incorrect Client Configuration - use settings tab to test proxy configuration settings\ may also be cause by misconfigured SSL implementation or access rights on WSUS Servers)

iuident.cab (Error: Not found - Omitting required port suffix on URL to access WSUS installed to port 8530 or resource is unreachable)

When i try to manually force de iuident.cab from the url : hdesserv65:8530/selfupdate/iuident.cab it downloads correctly.

I have aproved critical and security rules to be done automatically on WSUS server, but when i try to force it in the client machine, it doesnt seem to be installing anything...

I will post a log from a XP machine to see if anyone can help.

WSUS and Computer shows Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64 (KB976932) status as "Installed" but Windows Update lists it as a needed update

As a starting point,

When we made our Windows 7 image, we slipstreamed SP1 in it. It was not noticed until we tried, and could not use, WSUS to install IE10 that there was an issue.

IE10 lists on many of our computers as "Not Applicable" even though the prerequisites are showing as "Installed" or "Not Applicable" in WSUS on any of the PCs we have been testing. Thus far we have been able to fix this by manually installing the SP1 package through Windows Update. Further, SP1 does not have a "Needed" status for any of these affected PCs within WSUS.

I am at a loss as of now as to why SP1 lists as needed on PC's in Windows Updates, but the properties of My Computer lists SP1 as being installed. It is putting a damper on our IE10 rollout.

Any insight is greatly appreciated, and I can provide any information requested to iron this out.

Thanks in advance

Automatic Approvals force apply

Lets say I want to get on WSUS and create an auto approval rule. How do I force this to apply the rule immediately?

NOT INSTALL the updates but change the updates for the group to approved for install.  I'm wondering how to trigger this in WSUS so for example I can create an auto approve rule.  Set the rule to apply to group and then shut down rule.

WSUS 2012r2 Implementation in an Enterprise Environment

We are going to install and configure WSUS with server 2012r2 but have questions on best practices for installing it in a good size enterprise network.  First, should I use the Windows Internal Database or download SQL Express for use with the WSUS server?

Will WSUS service all the domains in a forest?  Sites with WAN links will have to have a local WSUS to minimize update traffic over the link.  What about non child domains?  Other domains in other forests that have trusts?

KB3038314 causing IE crash

$

0

hey all,

hopefully i have the right forum for this question.

the IE cumulative update for the past few months has been causing IE to crash on one of our internal websites.

the March update (3032359) has a documented issue with table-based websites (which our internal site is); this issue isn't documented for the April update (3038314), however it's still crashing IE on this website.

if i understand the cumulative updates correctly, they're a roll up of individual IE updates.  from what i can see, there's no way to uninstall these updates one by one.

my current theory is there's an offending update within the cumulative that's causing the crashing issue, but not sure how to isolate the offending update.

make sense?  any help is appreciated.

thanks!

update Office 2013 & IE

Hi there, I have WSUS setup to approve Windows Updates for my 2012 servers. Can I use WSUS to approve and install Updates for Office 2013 & IE 10 as well? If so, how? If not, what is other way to install updates for Office 2013 & IE 10?

I open Word -> File -> Account, but I can't find manual update there, so I'm sure how to update it manually.

Thanks.

WSUS issue after updates

Everything was going along just fine with WSUS on our SBS 2011 server until app three weeks ago. After installing MS updates WSUS is up and running but our clients (and the server itself) are not picking up any of the new updates that are synchronizing to WSUS from Microsoft. When I highlight the computers in WSUS, All Computers it shows that they have updates that have not been installed (and they have yellow exclamation marks) but when I run Check For Updates from the workstations they say that Windows is up to date. I know of two other companies using SBS 2011 and they have the same problem. How do I resolve this?

After a WSUS 3.0 SP2 repair on a SBS 2008 system, all computers have not reported a status yet. Why?

Hi there, I am an unpaid Intern for a small non-profit with no IT staff. They have a neglected SBS 2008 system. It has not pushed updates in years, WSUS 3.0 SP2 was broken, and the WSUS snap-in would no longer load. Also, I am new to WSUS and SBS 2008.

After many hours (days & weeks) of research I had finally figured out how to uninstall and install WSUS 3.0 SP2 on the SBS 2008 System. After, a new install of WSUS and then fixing synchronizing issues I have many updates that just will not install (even when approved) and all of my computers including the SBS 2008 server are all listed as computers with no status. Additionally, I keep getting Event ID 13042 and I have extensively researched that, as well and found these articles:(KB 2000598) and (SBS 2008, WSUS Self Update 13042 error even after following KB 2000598) which I did find informative.

Therefore, from what I understand the problems are linked to IIS which has me confused because I do not understand how to configure and make the correct changes to IIS.

Also I tried these steps in this article:(SBS 2008, WSUS SelfUpdate 13042 error even after following KB 2000598)

This is what I get:

http://servername/iuident.cab (Error 403.4) and (Error 404.0) when I put https at the beginning.

http://servername/selfupdate/iuident.cab (Error 403.4) (Error 404.0) when I put https at the beginning.

So please, I really need some kind of simplified instruction on how to configure IIS correctly so WSUS SP2 in SBS 2008 can begin pushing updates that are so desperate in need! Additionally, I am at the end of my internship and I have worked so hard on this and I know I am so close to getting WSUS fully functional again.

Any help at all would be extremely appreciated!

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. :-)

wuauclt commands to force reporting of status?

It seems that wuauclt /reportnow does not really seem to be doing anything even though it is supposed to make the clients report their status.  Is there anything that can be done to force an immediate status report?

I also notice that wuauclt does not seem to display errors.  I can type wuauclt /detttecknow or wuauclt /klsdjlkfjds and it won't display an error.

Downstream server(s) show 0% installed/not applicable on primary WSUS

Hi

I'm having a problem that probably is not a problem but I just want to ask if anyone know why this is happening.

I have a central primary WSUS and 6-7 replica servers at the local sites.
When I'm on the primary WSUS server and select the Downstream Servers view I see my replica servers. I see that they all according to that view last synchronized when they should - at night, but not at the same time, as configured.

One or two servers always show that they have 0% installed/not applicable in that view, when I log on to one of those replica servers that show 0%, I can see computers there and that their last status report was recently (today). So I would guess it actually is working as it should?

Recently, I  iniated the cleanup wizard on of those replica servers showing 0% and after I did that and manually syncronized and then refresed the Downsream Servers view the 0% changed to ~89%. However the other replica server didn't change after the same procedure.

Has anyone else experience this or know why this is happening?

Primary WSUS and all replica server are isntalled on Server 2008 R2.

Hi All

I am getting the error 80072ef3   in general the errors are relate to not being able tosearch for updates

We are using a wsus server  https://sccm.ourserver.com:8531

What could be causing this behavior?   I need to be able to search and get updates, this occurs during regular accounts and my domain admin account.

Do you know what actions I can take ?

Thanks
