WSUS not using 8531

I've configured WSUS clients on 2012R2 to use 8531/SSL to communicate to the upstream WSUS server. The summary screen for the client (below) says 8530, but in the registry itshttps://servername.blah.com:8531.

Network trace shows the server is using 8530, which is being blocked (only port 8531 was opened).  Any thoughts on how to correct the mis-configuration?

Thanks

Dear all,
My platform is on Widnows 2003 Std SP2 with WSUS 3.0 SP2.

I would like to ask if I can use command line to move computers into specific group as I prefer to do some automation task while in migration.  Thanks all.

Hi Technet,

I have a Server 08 R2 installation with process svchost.exe gradually increases memory usage over time until the servers performance suffers.

Using process explorer, in the handles pane, errors in path C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\datastore.edb
The error:(An error occurred while reading or writing to a file).

Stopping the Windows update service clears the errors, restarting and they appear again.

I have run the Microsoft windows update fixit.

I have renamed the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder and allowed it to rebuild its contents.

I have used esentutl to both repair and defrag the datastore.edb, both performed successfully.
However the errors persist.

Can anyone assist in what my next troubleshooting steps would be please?

Thanks,

Andrew

WSUS 3.0 Replica Server Sync Error

Good Afternoon,
I have a problem that I am having with a WSUS3 installation. This server is a Windows 2003 SP2 server and has WSUS 3.0 SP2 Version 3.2.7600.226 (WSUS30-KB9742455-x86.exe). In addition, it has the patch WSUS-KB2734608-x86.exe installed as well. The environment is as follows. We have 2 domains (Domain A and Domain B). The primary WSUS server is within Domain A and the WSUS server having the problem is in Domain B. I do not have control over the server in Domain A. The two domains are joined via a one-way outgoing (from Domain A) external trust.

The WSUS server in Domain B (which I maintain) is required to be set up as a replica server from the WSUS server within Domain A. This server is using the built in database installed on installation of WSUS. The problem occurs when once I initiate a synchronisation, the WSUS (within Domain B) gets to Status: Synchronizing..., Progress: 99%. This will stay at 99% for approximately 19 minutes and then fails with the following error within console:

An error occurred with the server's data store.
SqlException: Timeout expired.  The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.

The interesting thing is if I change this server back to a non-replica server the synchronization will complete at 100% without failure. The error only occurs when configured as a replica server.

Some facts on this installation may help in this diagnosis. This server has never successfully synchronized when configured as a replica server. The server has been rebuilt many times and WSUS installed and reinstalled many times in order to attempt to solve this problem.

How many updates are within this server? (Before Cleanup Wizard Run)
    -    Unapproved Updates (Status: Any): 25136 updates of 31653 shown, 31653 total
    -    Approved Updates (Status: Any): 2385 updates of 31653 shown, 31653 total
    -    Declined Updates (Status: Any):4132 updates of 31653 shown, 31653 total

How many computers attach to this WSUS Server:
    -    Computers: 80 all in the one group 'All Computers'.

How many languages & Update File Settings?
    -    1 x English
    -    Store update files locally on this server
          - Download update files to this server only when updates are approved.

When was the last time the Server Cleanup Wizard was run?
    -    The Server Cleanup Wizard been run several times since I was faced with the synchronization problem with no effect on the synchronization failure.

When was the last time the WSUS DB Maintenance Script was run?
    -    This is a new installation. The maintenance script has never been run.

If anyone may be able to help on trying to resolve this it would be most appreciated. I have been following other posts regarding WSUS sync issues and as of yet not been able to come up with a solution.

Kind Regards

Win8.1 Clients not reporting to WSUS

$

Testing Windows 8.1 Pro on a few of our computers here. At first, the client computers were not showing up in the WSUS Console... even after a couple days and many Console refreshes. After reading a few TechNet forums on the matter, I ran, (on the client machines - in an elevated command prompt) wuauclt /detectnow  which resulted in the computer name showing up in the Console. It shows (in the Console) Windows 6.3 as the Operating System and in Last Status Report it shows Not Yet Reported. On the Client, going into Windows Update, shows "Your set to automatically install updates - No Updates are available". Pressing "Check for Updates" results in "Windows could not search for new updates - error code: 800B0001" When checking online for Windows Updates, I can see/get updates from Windows Updates. Any ideas on how to get the Windows 8.1 clients to get their updates from WSUS? Here are the specs of both ends:

Server Side -

Windows Server 2008 R@ Enterprise SP1 64 bit

WSUS Update Service ver. 3.2.7600.226

Management Console 3.0 version 6.1 build 7600:SP1

Client Side -

Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit

Core i5-4210U w/8GB mem

WSUS status report causing high cpu usage on clients???

$

0

Hi,

Since yesterday morning, we've been noticing abnormal cpu spikes on many of our windows servers.  It's occurring randomly and only lasts for about 5 or 10 mins, then goes away.  On a hunch that it might be windows updates, I checked our WSUS server and noticed that the "last report status report" date for each of the affected machines matches very closely to the time when the spike occurred.  I have checked %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log  on a couple of the machines and the last entry in the file shows something similar to:

2015-07-16 12:28:09:365  872 f34 AU Launched new AU client for directive 'Install Approval', session id = 0x2

Nothing has changed with our WSUS configuration (which is controlled by group policy).  Also, our group policy is set to auto download and schedule the install on Sunday mornings....immediate installation disabled....detection frequency disabled.

all that said:

1.  what exactly is the log entry that I posted above saying?  Is it downloading approved updates?  Installing them (it shouldn't be according to our policy)

2.  why is this causing cpu spike's?...after reviewing our performance logs for each server (going back 30 days), these servers never have cpu spikes like this.

3. what exactly is the "status report" date showing in wsus and how to control it?

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Windows Server 2012R2 DC with MSSQL$Microsoft##WID errors

My DC is intermittently showing errors:

SQL Server is terminating a system or background task HADR Task due to errors in starting up the task (setup state 1).
Error: 18054, Severity: 16, State: 1.

These errors have a Microsoft HotFix - see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2769594

BUT- the hotfix for SQL server and my DC does not have a stand alone copy of SQL - the SQL server that the DC uses is bundled into the OS.  So my question is how to I apply this fix to the DC when there is no real instance of SQL on the DC?

Is Microsoft aware that this same memory allocation error can occur on a Windows Server DC?   What is the recommended method for repair?

wuauclt commands to force reporting of status?

It seems that wuauclt /reportnow does not really seem to be doing anything even though it is supposed to make the clients report their status.  Is there anything that can be done to force an immediate status report?

I also notice that wuauclt does not seem to display errors.  I can type wuauclt /detttecknow or wuauclt /klsdjlkfjds and it won't display an error.

Imaged PCs cant update - useless error message

I've been imaging pcs at a rate of about 6 a week for the last few months.  I made a single change to the deployment.  I changed the version of flash from 15 to 18.  The three computers i'm working with are the first three imaged with flash 18.  I do not know if it's relevant, but it's the only change I made, so anything's possible.

Three newly imaged PCs are unable to check for updates.  I searched and found this article:https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/954960 however these are windows 7 64bit pc's (with 32bit office and in at least one case, a 64bit Microsoft office product, however they are all office 2013) however ospp.vbs tells me that all Microsoft products are 2013.  In addition, the quoted text from the softwaredistribution.log is very different from mine.

These three pcs are all throwing the same error when I try to check for updates.  Below is a sample from the windowsupdate.log of one of the clients with the problem. I have compared to a healthy pc's windowsupdate.log and this is where the problem starts:

however at the very same time, give or take 5 milliseconds I see this:

Again, this is for all three computers with the problem.

So I researched that problem and it came up as a potential ram problem on the server, yet if that was the case, wouldn't more desktops be reporting this same problem?  Chkdsk in read only mode indicated no disk errors and I am currently running a RAM diagnostic, just in case - but it's not adding up for me.

I have exhausted my skill with google, TechNet and wsus troubleshooting. Can anybody recommend a course of action to continue troubleshooting the problem?

I have WSUS 3 SP2 with KB2938066 installed on top of that.  WSUS is running with a SQL Server 2008R2 (standard, not express) back end on a Windows 2008R2 server

The clients are Windows 7 64bit with a combination of 64 and 32bit software installed as part of the imaging process.  Two of the desktops are currently identical since the imaging just completed.  One has had a number of things installed on top of the base image software.

the imaging process uses ADK and MDT 2012 (lite touch) with pxe boot, if that is relevant at all.

Thank you.

Can WSUS be configured to install at a time other than the top of the hour?

I'd prefer to select times like 8:30pm or 5:45am. I currently can only select the top of the hour (12am; 1pm; etc.). Is it possible to change it to a different time?

Installing WSUS on a 2008 downstream server not connected to the internet

Hello -

This is my first time posting on here and I'm not a guru of Microsoft OS...so go easy.

Here is my problem...

I have a WSUS server (called SCRM) that I built and is connected to the internet...it updates all the clients and everything seems to work fine. My problem is, I have closed network with no internet connectivity except to SCRM and I'd like to build another WSUS server (called WRA) on that network and get the updates from SCRM so I can update all the clients on the private network.

When I go to install WSUS on WRA, it fails....because the WSUS install wants to connect to the internet, which of course it can't do and I'm stuck in this loop. I have also tried to download the WSUS 3.0 SP2 and run it on the WRA...no luck there either. I have installed IIS on WRA with no problem. Suggestions??

WSUS can not sync, error in ipv6 address

Hello everyone,
While I installed wsus in my Windows 2012 R2 server, and start sync, the server report an error like this:

WebException: 无法连接到远程服务器 ---> System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: 向一个无法连接的网络尝试了一个套接字操作。 [2a01:111:f330:1790::a01]:443

   在 Microsoft.UpdateServices.ServerSync.CatalogSyncAgentCore.SyncConfigUpdatesFromUSS()
   在 Microsoft.UpdateServices.ServerSync.CatalogSyncAgentCore.ExecuteSyncProtocol(Boolean allowRedirect)

My server can only support ipv4, so I think while wsus using ipv6, I can not sync.

But how can I disable ipv6 sync? I have already disbale ipv6 in my network connections.

Thanks.

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/f447e7d6-7007-4eb6-b38b-90f92525e092/how-to-uninstall-wsus

Now i have mi server 2008 SP2 with Windows internal Database and this errors

I try this solution:

The NT Authority\Network Service account must have Full Control permission for the following folders so that the WSUS Administration snap-in displays correctly:

%windir%\Microsoft .NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files

%windir%\Temp

I dont know what more can i do. I cannotseethe IIS console either the WSUS console.

I am trying to install WSUS on a Hyper-V guest server 2012 R2 but it is failing on the post installation task. I have done this on a number of other similar system without any problems.

I have uninstalled WSUS, IIS and WID then re-installed but still get the same error.

I have obviously done something different on this system but cannot see what.

Stop a Language Pack for trying to load

I would appreciate advice on how to Stop a Language Pack for trying to load

Unsure if the Language Pack was requested or not but IT IS NOT NEEDED - yet I cannot find how to delete it - as a consequence it keeps prompting to be allowed to download (which is most kind and helpful if I needed it).

Advice appreciated.

WSUS and laptops

We use WSUS and control it via Group Policy.  If I have a laptop that is in the office and on the network, it will get it's updates from WSUS when they are approved (e.g. 2pm on patch Tuesday).  The laptop will also get it's instructions for when to schedule those updates (in our case 3am) and will wake it up if it's asleep.  My question is what happens if the laptop is taken home and is not on the network when 3am comes along?  Does it still follow it's instructions?

Thanks!

Jim

PS: our Group Policy is configured as such:

------------------------------------------------------------------

Allow Automatic Updates immediate installation: Enabled

Allow non-Administrators to receive update notifications: Enabled

Automatic Updates detection frequency: 1 hour

Configure Automatic Updates: Enabled

Configure Automatic Updating: 4 - Auto download and schedule the install

Install during automatic maintenance: Enabled

Scheduled install day: 0 - Every day

Scheduled install time: 03:00

Enabling Windows Update Power Management to auto wake up the system: Enabled

No auto-restart with logged on users: Enabled

Re-Prompt for restart with scheduled installations: Enabled

Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled installations: Disabled
