WSUS Certificate Renewal
Hello,
I noticed that my WSUS certificate is getting close to expiring.
Windows Sevrer 2012 R2
Can someone go through the process to renew the certificate?
Can I just choose - 'enable automatic rebind of renewed certificate'?
Will I need to touch every PC in the office and make a change?
We currently do not have a domain setup.

Why does some Windows Updates in wsus doenst contain a architecture?
synced all security/critical updates on my wsus server and got a lot of updates which doenst contain any architecture. Is this because this update obtains for both architectures (64-bit AND 32-bit). Or if there isnt any architecture does this mean the update is for x86?
A example:
Update
for Windows 7 (KB3020369)
Update
for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3020369)
And another one:
Security
Update for Windows 7 (KB3046002)
Security
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3046002)
No client computers have contacted WSUS server
Hi All,
I stood up a 2012R2 WSUS server several weeks ago and although synchronizations are going well "no client PCs or servers have contacted the server." I looked in the Application log and it verified this situation displaying a warning event ID 13051. What did I fail to configure?

Getting past WSUS Cleanup Wizard time out, removing unnecessary updates.
Standard problem with WSUS Cleanup Wizard timing out without removing any unnecessary updates. SBS2K8. WSUS 3. 6000+ unnecessary updates awaiting approval. Huge database. Unresponsive SQL server. Lot of people have this problem:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/9724778f-c1a0-4d24-82e4-8b2d054257d6/wsus-hangs-on-cleanup-wizard-for-unused-updates-then-disconnects-from-console?forum=winserverwsus
Drives are regularly defragged in the background. Not gonna shut down the server and have down time just to fix this.
Tried the reindexing script from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd939795(WS.10).aspx
, (don't copy the command line, it has weird characters in it, just type it in manually.) and it completes but it didn't improve anything.
Found this:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and it also times out.
Found this comment:
For anyone who is getting Timeout Expired with obsolete updates. I have a solution! Use server name : "
\\.\pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\sql\query
" to connect with SQL managment studio. Once connected manually run "
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup
". This will return a list of obsolete ID's. For each one run "
exec spDeleteUpdate @localUpdateID=000000
", where 000000 is the ID. For myself I found the first ID in the list took a full 37 minutes to delete and then after that I could run the cleanup through the GUI as per usual.

Found that you actually need to do:
USE SUSDB
GO
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup
And to connect in the first place, I had to hit Options, and select named pipe from the middle pull down.
First delete took 6 minutes and memory has spiked up to almost 15GB in use out of 16GB physical. But the WSUS console (Update Services) still shows the same number of old updates. Failure? I don't think so: I'm running the cleanup wizard again and so far it
isn't timing out... It has run over night, and has made some progress; the bar has moved perhaps 5%.
So... My take is that the SQL server causes this problem when there is to much data, because the indexes are poorly designed (not because the indexes need to be re-indexed) causing the first query to time out, which causes the cleanup to fail. Once you get past that first deletion, and have everything loaded into memory, the cleanup tool can stay connected long enough to delete each unneeded update.
Next step will be to find a command line method, such as:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and put it into the task scheduler like Microsoft should have done at the beginning to keep this from getting out of hand.
P.S. Lawrence Garvin, please do NOT reply to this; I have no need of your arrogance.
deleted computer group
Hi,
I deleted an entire computer group instead of removing one computer. I successfully recreated the original comptuer group. The computers show themselves in the unassigned computer group. The computers are Server side assigned. When I attempt to reassign the unassigned comptuers to the original group, the "change membership" command is not available. Please advise. Thank in advance.

Can wsus automatically aprove updates by reading in a file?
In the WSUS server you have to approve the updates 1 by 1. Now i have all the updates which i went to approve in my excel list, this list contains the exact string of the description in the wsus server. Example: "update for windows 7 (kb123456)" I also have to exact updatelink of this. Now, is there anyone I can load this excel file, or text or whatever file, into the wsus server so it automatically approves all the updates with the exact same string. So i dont have to approve them 1by1 anymore.
Thanks in advance!
WID on another Drive? (Server 2012 R2)
Hi,
the Best Practise Analyser keeps telling me I should move the WSUS database to another drive.
I have searched the internet, but all the articles I could find were using the SQL Management Studio. Is this really the way to go here? I would expect that moving the WID, which is a role and not a exclusive software like SQL Server 2015 or Exchange Server 2013, can be done without separate Software?
In lack of other options, I did install the SQL 2012 Management Studio x64 and were trying to connect to \\.\pipe\mssql$microsoft##ssee\sql\query, but that never worked ...
SCUP 2011 not updating WSUS
SCUP 2011 on Srv2012 with WSUS 6.2.9200.16384, no SCCM in environment. I've been through the TechNet article about SCUP on 2012.
SCUP appears to run fine and claims success in publishing. Yet after forcing synchronization on WSUS the update never shows (latest Adobe Flash). SCUP.LOG is no help (No idea what I'm looking for, nothing jumps out as a problem)
Exchange Anti-Spam update fails with 80070643
Server 2012R@
Exchange 2013 SP1
I get routine updates to the exchange anti-spam filters delivered from WSUS. They are all failing with error 80070643. I went to the exchange forum and got a manual update script which works. Why does the WSUS update fail?

Moved SUSDB.mdf and SUSDB_log.ldf, but the Best Practices Analyser keeps telling me it's located on a System Drive.
WSUS disappears after a reboot.
After I install WSUS on my Window 2012 R2 Standard server and reboot the role disappears.
WID also disappears. My server is a DC, and yes I know I should not run it on a DC but I have no choice.
I have now tried to install this role maybe 5 times now and get the same result. Also for some reason the Windows Installer service is greyed out in the start type and set to manual.
I have also run sfc /scannow without any lucky.
My e:\WSUS is also intact.

WSUS migration from Windows server 2003 to Windows server 2008 R2
We have followed below steps :
1. Install WSUS on new server with local express database
2. During configuration wizard choose "Synchronize from another WSUS server…", enter the name of the existing WSUS instance we are migrating from, and then choose the replica option.
3. Complete the configuration wizard
4. Wait for initial synchronisation to complete.
5. Change the new server from a replica to standalone.
6. Download the WSUS API Samples and Tools from Microsoft and install it on each of the servers.
7. On the old server open a command prompt and navigate to the C:\Program Files\Update Services 3.0 API Samples and Tools\WsusMigrate\WsusMigrationExport folder.
8. Run "wsusmigrationexport.exe settings.xml" to export the settings.
But at this step we are facing below error :

KB954430 on 2008R2 SP1
On July 12th Microsoft changed the detection of KB954430 to support 2008R2 SP1 also with this XML Core Services 4.0 security update. But although WU offers it WSUS won't. Can anyone confirm this?
Thank you
Daniel
ComputersNeedingThisUpdate always shows 0 in UpdateServices PowerShell module
I've just written an extremely simple script to query our WSUS server to check how many servers need a patch that has been approved. Here's the code:
$patchID = "KB2992611" $wsusServerName = "wsusserver" $wsusserver = Get-WsusServer $wsusServerName -PortNumber 8530 # Get approved patches that are still needed: $approvedandneeded = Get-WsusUpdate -UpdateServer $wsusserver -Status Needed -Approval Approved # Filter to get the patch you're after: $filteredUpdates = $approvedandneeded | Select-Object -ExpandProperty Update | Where-Object { $_.Title -match $patchID } foreach($update in $filteredUpdates) { $updateDetails = Get-WsusUpdate -UpdateId $($update.UpdateID) -UpdateServer $server Write-Output "Computers needing this update: $($updateDetails.ComputersNeedingThisUpdate) | $($update.Title)" }
Output
Computers needing this update: 0 | Security Update for Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Edition (KB2992611) Computers needing this update: 0 | Security Update for Windows Server 2012 R2 (KB2992611) Computers needing this update: 0 | Security Update for Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition (KB2992611) Computers needing this update: 0 | Security Update for Windows Server 2008 (KB2992611) Computers needing this update: 0 | Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB2992611)
As you can see, the ComputersNeedingThisUpdate attribute/property is always showing 0. This is despite the WSUS console showing completely different results. I *know* most computers need that patch and I can see this through the console, just not via a script.
It's worth stating that the ComputersInstalledOrNotApplicable and ComputersWithNoStatus properties return accurate data, it's not a problem with the code.
Help is appreciated.
Regards,
Robin
WSUS and laptops
We use WSUS and control it via Group Policy. If I have a laptop that is in the office and on the network, it will get it's updates from WSUS when they are approved (e.g. 2pm on patch Tuesday). The laptop will also get it's instructions for when to schedule those updates (in our case 3am) and will wake it up if it's asleep. My question is what happens if the laptop is taken home and is not on the network when 3am comes along? Does it still follow it's instructions?
Thanks!
Jim
PS: our Group Policy is configured as such:
------------------------------------------------------------------
Allow Automatic Updates immediate installation: Enabled
Allow non-Administrators to receive update notifications: Enabled
Automatic Updates detection frequency: 1 hour
Configure Automatic Updates: Enabled
Configure Automatic Updating: 4 - Auto download and schedule the install
Install during automatic maintenance: Enabled
Scheduled install day: 0 - Every day
Scheduled install time: 03:00
Enabling Windows Update Power Management to auto wake up the system: Enabled
No auto-restart with logged on users: Enabled
Re-Prompt for restart with scheduled installations: Enabled
Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled installations: Disabled

136GB of unwanted, unrequested update downloads to WSUS 2012 R2
Hi, I've got a single, newly installed WSUS server.
I have "Download update files to this server only when updates are approved" selected - and have done since install.
Server summary stats show "Approved Updates : 291" and Download status shows "Updates needing files : 3,440 download 35GB of 136GB". So, something is wrong here. When I check the download destination directory, I can see service packs for products I don't use, in Languages I don't want - and have never synced or approved.
I don't want to wait a week to download updates I'll never need, and then have to try and remove them (meanwhile it's holding up the download of the only updates I DO want).
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Or, more importantly, how I can cancel these unwanted downloads and remove them?
