Can someone explain why the SoftwareDistribution.log contains LOTS of the following? It's a 2012R2 server (WSUS 6.3).

2012 R2 Servers not auto rebooting after scheduled update install

Hi,

Since the installation of the July 2018 rollup I've noticed our 2012 R2 servers which have active or disconnected sessions are not rebooting after the scheduled install of updates.

The Monthly rollup KB4338815 was installed last weekend 17/07/2018 and this weekend we noticed after the install of KB4345224 which fixes issues introduced by KB4338815, 2012 R2 servers have a status of pending restart if they have disconnected sessions.

We have the policy setting 'alwaysautorebootatscheduledtime' enabled and the 'noautorebootwithloggedonusers' set to false or zero.

Never had this problem in previous patch installations, anyone else seeing this issue ?

Thanks

WSUS errors on servers 2008 R2 and 2012 R2

Hello,

We are deploying security updates for a hundred Windows Server through WSUS. However, there is a problem: some of our servers don’t install all the updates (KB) we put in the WSUS. Looking more in detail, these servers don’t have some updates because WSUS considers that they are not applicable for these servers. However, these updates can be applied by installing them by hand.

We observe that servers running Windows Server 2012 R2 receive much better updates than servers running Windows Server 2008 R2. Also, servers don’t receive all the same updates, so we know that the problem is not an incompatibility of an update but rather a bad distribution of updates. Obviously, we created two GPO, one for the 2008 R2 and one for the 2012 R2. WSUS is installed on a server running Windows Server 2012 R2. The version of WSUS is 6.3.9600.18694.

Do you have any idea?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Number of "Updates Needing Files" never changes

Hi

I have a WSUS server on Windows Server 2016.  It seems to be stuck on the number of files needing updates.

Every day it reports the same figure:-

Updates needing files: 193
Downloaded 356,281.49 of 549,502.84 MB

Every night my FW reports BITS traffic to my WSUS server of +/- 6 or 7 GB, but the number of updates needing files never changes.  It has been like this for over a week.

Is there any way I can check exactly what has been downloaded over the past day or two? Or get the number of required files to change?

Thanks very much

This Computer has not reported status yet

Hi,

I have installed WSUS 3.2 in Windows 2008 R2 server on June 25th and created GPO to point all the clients to WSUS. I see most of the clients computers listed under WSUS computers list. But the problem is more than 50% of clients status shows has "Not Yet Reported".

I have carried out the below steps to fix it, but still it is not working.

1 - Force Detection of Updates and Report to the WSUS Server: wuauclt.exe /detectnow /reportnow

2 - Cleanup all cached files and force detection:
      net stop wuauserv
      rmdir /S /Q C:\Windows\softwaredistribution
      net start wuauserv
      wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow

3 - Stopped the BITS  and the Windows Update service  removed registry

     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate
     "SusClientId"
     Restarted the machine
     wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow

4 - Done SID refresh by running Sysprep.exe and forced to report the clients on WSUS (wuauclt.exe /reportnow)

After all these steps still client shows has Not yet reported.

thanks

Difference with info between downstream server and upstream server WSUS 6.3

1 upstream server, 5 downstream servers

Fairly new to WSUS here. I walked into a role with an already established WSUS setup. Things seem to be working as designed:

Client side targetting

WSUS Downstream server at each site

The issue I am seeing here is a difference in status for clients when looking at them from the upstream console verses looking at the same computer group from the console at the site itself (downstream server).

Example:

Upstream System console

Computer Group "Site A" shows 500 workstations, 200 of which show as 100% done concerning patching and compliance.

Downstream System Site A Console

Computer Group "Site A" shows 500 workstations, 20 of which show as 100% done concerning patching and compliance.

We also see issues with clients that show a status of 99% done. When we check the "updates needed" against these 99'ers we see anywhere from 1 to as much as 30-40 updates that are "not approved". When we check this update against the Upstream system its approved.

We have Synchronizations running daily on all downstream systems, disabled on upstream. I've since removed and added the WSUS role, server reset, server cleanup, and so on with the Downstream Site A system.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Windows 10 Machines Not Rebooting After Updates Installed

$

Good afternoon,

I'm having a frustrating time getting machines to reliably reboot after installing Windows Updates. I've posted our current GPO below to help troubleshoot. It seem that most machines, mine included, will reboot after installing updates, but other machines do not. They will download and install updates per our policy, but do not perform a reboot until later in the week, something we do not want happening. We want to be able to tell users, 'On Wednesday nights, your machine will reboot'.

Group Policy

Always automatically restart at the scheduled time: 15 minutes

Configure Automatic Updates:

  • Configure automatic updates- 4 - Auto download and schedule the install
  • Install during automatic maintenance - Disabled
  • Scheduled install day- 4 - Every Wednesday, Every week
  • Scheduled install time - 23:00
  • Install updated for other Microsoft products - Enabled

Do not allow update deferral policies to cause scans against Windows Update - Enabled

No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations - Disabled

Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled installations - 15 minutes

Specify intranet Microsoft Update service location - Internal URLS

Manage Preview Builds - Disable preview builds

Select when Preview Builds and Features Updates are received - Semi-annual, Deferred 180 days.

Any help is appreciated. What I want is for machines to download and install updates every Wednesday night, and to reboot right after installation is complete. As stated, it works for some machines and not for others. These machines are in the same OU and same Windows 10 version, so nothing wacky is going on there.

Thanks,

CA

0x80d02002 Error on clients (while download Feature update 1803)

$

Good Day!

We are use WSUS Role on Windows Server 2016.

Clients can't download "Feature update to Windows 10 (consumer editions), version 1803, en-us". It's stuck on 0% and  failed  after few hours with error "0x80d02002".

In WindowsUpdate.log I saw this entries:

2018/05/22 16:10:50.9524467 4496  10012 DownloadManager DO job {32BDB35B-BE74-4B32-B146-FDFDBFCF9DB4} failed, updateId = 0DF72D03-C700-4EEA-994A-9777CCDFBF90.200, hr = 0x80D02002. File URL = http://wsus.domain.com:8530/d/msdownload/update/software/secu/2018/05/windows10.0-kb4103729-x64_0cf6d3009ed0bb61fab3c4d8964cd6f209373c97.cab, local path = C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\eb380a276773ea9883b97c243ead8ed0\Windows10.0-KB4103729-X64.cab

2018/05/22 16:10:50.9529958 4496  10012 DownloadManager   Progress failure bytes total = 21692097, bytes transferred = 0

On WSUS server in "Update Files and Languages" window option "Do not store update files locally, computers install from Microsoft Update" is set.

I can't understand why clients still use local URL. And i didn't receive such errors before.
I reinstalled WSUS role (absolutely wiped db), but error still persist.

Does anybody faced with such problem?

Thanks!

Locally Published Packages failing to download from WSUS 0x80d02002

$

I'm continually getting the "0x80d02002" error when attempting to download locally published packages from WSUS. All computer are running Windows 10, but some are on 1511, 1803, and everywhere in between. This started happening a few months ago, but not sure what, if anything changed to cause this to happen.

It appears that most other updates complete the download, but the rest of the updates eventually seem to fail due to the packages failing.

Server is WS 2012 R2 for reference. The packages are mostly small software like Adobe, Java, etc., all seem to time out and fail with this error.

The usual delete SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folders has not worked.

Windows 10/Server 2016 Windows update blues

$

I am seriously wondering when Microsoft fires the people responsible for the downright disaster that is Windows Update in Windows 10 and Server 2016.

I sometimes wonder where Microsoft gets their employees from ? It seems to be from some alien planet.

Prior to Win10/2016 Wu was ok, nothing more and nothing less. It was always prone to errors here and errors there. But since Windows 10/Server 2016 it is downright unusable. More often then not, I simply download from the update catalog, because the built in function is error and fail central. Failed here, failed there. Please how difficult can it be to just update the OS so we can move on.

I have maintenance weekends, and about 140 servers to do, but the time it takes to download/preparing / installing a CU on Windows server 2016 means the weekend is too short !

For instance, I have this server that is on 14393.1198, used the software center of SCCM, updates installed except for the CU which failed to install. Ok, fine, use WU, oh boy, it's stuck at preparing to install for over 40 minutes now. This is a SERVER for cyring out loud. Why does such an update take this long to install. A new OS installation is done in less than 20 minutes, yet a simple build upgrade takes ages. This is not acceptable, it takes to long, too cumbersome and too prone to errors.

When oh when do you guys scrap the system and design something that works ? And why the fuck am I presented with KB4034658 when the lastest one is KB4039396 ? What total idiocy is that ?

Fix your shit please, it is simply unworkable. I am reluctant to introduce any more server 2016 servers because of this problem.

Oh I forgot, a brand new windows server installation, windows update, after ages it claims it is ready and reboots, after reboot it failed to apply the update, and this happens more and more often. It is simply unbelieveable that after about an hour, it is still not happy and reboots the machine several times ! The reason why we have so many MS servers is at least the workload keeps running if you have several servers running the same workload, because with WU you could loose your servers for hours, even if you did a WU just three months ago.

LOL and failed again, after almost an hour, failed to install KB4034658, twice now. How CAN a simple OS upgrade fail, can someone explain. The machine has the OS, hyper-v and nothing more. It has enough memory, enough disk space, enough processing power, yet KB4034658 has now failed twice. This server is now trying to update itself for over two hours. What a nightmare WU on windows have become. Like I said, unusable, I do think there is no other way to describe this disaster.

and despite it failed to install the update, this server is now displaying this for the past 30 minutes or so. Microsoft, wake up, this is a SERVER, we want uptime, not this shit.

How long can client computer refuse to download updates after deferral period.

$

Hi all,

I have a question regarding WSUS and updates deferral. Right now I have my own server with WSUS configured. Client computers are connected to it and set to check for updates each 10h, defer quality updates for 30 days, "Notify for download and auto install". I am using Windows Server 2016 Datacenter and Windows 10 Enterprise. None of the updates are approved.

Lets imagine a situation when new cumulative update is released, client computer will then "don't see" it for 30 days as it is deferred. After this period of time there is a notification about new updates and Updates & Security page in Settings shows an option to download it. And here comes my question, how long can client computer refuse to download it? Will it be forced after some time and download/install by itself? If so, when?

Thank you for help in advance.

WSUS Downloads all files again and again

Hi everyone,

I-ve set up a online WSUS and at every sync, it seems it downloads all files. In other words :

- I start a sync the 1st, and it announced me 900GB to download (for example)

- The day after, all files are downloaded and approved. I start a new sync and it downloads everything again !

Are there a way to only download the difference ? Or is it the normal way ?

The next point I don't understand is : it downloads 900GB, but only 350GB is taken by WSUSContent : why ?

Thanks in advance for your answers

PS : sorry for my approximative english

WSUS was not getting all updates from Windows Update Site

Recently, I discovered that WSUS from my customers is not getting all updates available in Windows Update Site, like the last ones KB4088889, KB4089848, KB4099950, for example. WSUS is able to find all others updates and I can approve its without problems. I think that maybe be a problem inside of site of Microsoft or Microsoft will release this updates later, I don´t know. My customers have WSUS installed in Windows 2012 R2 and 2016 servers, so is not a problem related with the version of O.S. Are there more people with this problem??? Please let me know.

Thanks
