1809 on W10 shows installed and requires restart

$

Hi,

the question is about 1809 update installed from MS (not from WSUS).

After all the stories with 1809, I decided to apply 1809 on my machine as a test step.

So I did install from MS. For that I connected my machine to available ISP (no corporate LAN involved).

See the pics...

One shows it installed and requires restart.

The second - current version is 1709. I restarted multiple times. The same situation.

How to explain and what to do to assure that the version will display correctly, if it was really installed.

Thx.

Some servers not in the correct group

Hello.

I have a 3-node Hyper-V cluster. The 3 nodes are all identical servers, in the same OU in AD, and getting the same Group Policies. RSOP shows the correct WSUS settings on each one, however, in WSUS Server 1 is correctly listed in the Servers Group. Server 2 and Server 3 are only listed in the All Computers Group. Server 1 is 99% compliant, Server 2 is 100% compliant and Server 3 is 0%, having 'not reported'. These servers have been running for months (with the exception of Server 3 which was purchased at the same time, but only recently added to the Hyper-V cluster).

Adding Server 3 to the cluster seems to have also interfered with CAU, as that now fails as well. Troubleshooting that led me to the WSUS server, which in turn led me to the inconsistent state.

How do I get all 3 of them in the Servers OU and communicating when GPO seems to be assigning the correct settings already? Could this be a local firewall issue on the new server? is the a way to 'unregister' the new server from WSUS and 're-register' it?

Thank you.

Install Critical updates at arrival time and install other updates two weeks later

Hello

I need to know what is the best way to Install Critical and security updates at arrival time and install other updates two weeks after arrival tim?  (when all updates are auto approved).

Can I use "Set a deadline for approval" option in WSUS or not?

Copy back WSUS Content Folder

Hi,

I have RAID 1 in my WSUS Content disk, but im out of disk space. I want to change this RAID to RAID 0, so it will double my disk space.

I don't have any free slot in my WSUS Server, so I cant simply add a new hard disk and move content using wsusutil.

The only thing I can think now is to copy my WsusContent folder to a different server, stop WSUS services, change my RAID to 0, copy the data back and start the services again. It will work? Anyone have a better idea?

Thank you!

KB3146978 status not correctly reported.

On a computer, the update KB3146978 is not reported as missing by the WUA but the content of the registry key  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\ registry and the Package_for_KB3146878~31bf385ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.0 is clearly missing. Therefore if I want to programatically check for the presence of that update I am sure to report it as missing whereas the WUA will not.

What can be the cause of such a problem ?

WSUS - updates for NOT selected products

I use WSUS 3.0 on Win2012R2 server. Due to limited disk space on WSUS server I selected only the most important products in the product list (such as Windows 7, 10). All computers are set (over group policy) to download updates from WSUS. If the computers need to update a Microsoft product not selected in WSUS (for ex. Office), does it mean this product will never get any updates? Or WSUS will allow to download updates for such product from regular Windows update? Will it somehow bypass WSUS database of cached updates and download such update from internet everytime the client needs? Thanks for describing.

Updates not downloading and installing when scheduled

I am checking into why one of out windows 10 clients failed to install updates automatically this morning.

We have the GPO policy "Configure Automatic Update" set to 4 - Auto download and schedule the install. The scheduled time is Wednesday and 1am.

For some reason the client in question downloaded the updates ok, but did not install them. I came in this morning and and was presented with the "Install Now" when i checked updates on the PC. Here is a copy of the log from the PC.

Troubleshooing guide for Surface Hub

$

Does anyone have a guide on how to troubleshoot windows update for surface hub? We have 10+ surface hub, all pointed to the same FQDN for an internal WSUS server. Some of them work as expected, others do not.

Those that are not working as expected properly show up in the WSUS console with 'not yet reported' as their status... They also receive a 200 on :

/ClientWebService/client.asmx
/SimpleAuthWebService/SimpleAuth.asmx

As I can see that referenced in the IIS log file

However, I cannot find any documentation on whether an equivalent of WindowsUpdate.log exists on a surface hub...

Any thoughts on where to go next for troubleshooting surface hub?

What to do with non-rollup updates?

$

I'm wondering how others handle the approval of Windows updates. I have recently built a WSUS server to handle the patching in the estate. Previously the servers (and workstations) would go direct to the internet to download the updates.

I am mainly interested in only patching the Security and Quality Rollups that are released each month, this is for OS, as well as .net framework (rollups).

If there is a major security update that is released outwith of the monthly rollups then of course we would approve and patch via WSUS.

The majority of the servers are Server 2012R2, built using an image which has been recently patched as well.

I was under the impression that the latest rollups that are released contain all previous months updates, one thing that confuses me is that when I check the status of some servers, I can see they are advising they need certain standalone updates. For example, only 1 server is complaining it needs KB3134813 (using this as an example).

Because I am installing rollups each month, am I right in thinking I can Decline standalone updates like the one above, because it should be included in the monthly rollups? If its not included in the monthly updates then why do the odd servers say they need these updates? As its not installed on every server in the estate so surely other ones should be complaining as well?

There are multiple other updates that are sporadically required for random servers, and if they are legitimately required, then it will take me some time going through each one, reviewing the KB article, and seeing if its something that is required.

Another example is a couple of servers were reporting they needed certain KB's for timezone fixes for Azerbaijan. Now, the servers are based in the UK so I have no need to be installing a fix for the Azerbaijan timezone :)

To note; I built the WSUS server, selected my products and classifications (everything except Drivers, feature packs and Tools), and let is check in with MS Online.

So currently I have around 980 unapproved updates, most of them are 2012 related, and the release date for most of them go back years.

Should I just select pretty much all of them and decline them? Knowing that the monthly rollups will take care of them. Should I just leave them and not care, and only focus on the monthly rollups? Or do I need to go through each server individually in WSUS and review each KB it advises its needing?

From a compliance and reporting perspective, a good chunk of servers show as 99% Installed/NotApplicable, and this is because of these odd standalone updates advising they are required, as they sit in the Unapproved state.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API. (kb3159706)

My WSUS stop working when I installed kb3159706 and ran the post install so I can deploy Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Has anyone ran into this same problem? Below is my log.

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.

Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.

The WSUS administration console has encountered an unexpected error. This may be a transient error; try restarting the administration console. If this error persists,

Try removing the persisted preferences for the console by deleting the wsus file under %appdata%\Microsoft\MMC\.

WSUS - Which Windows 10 chose

$

Hi,

I would like to implement the WSUS service on a Windows Server 2012 server. I installed the service but now I do not know what to choose in the service itself in the "products and classifications" section in terms of Windows 10. What are the differences between this versions ? I would like WSUS to be able to install the latest version of windows 10, as the new version will appear. Which item to choose?

Windows 10 version 1809 and Later Servicing Drivers
Windows 10 version 1809 and Later Upgrade & Servicing Drivers
Windows 10 Dynamic Update
Windows 10 Feature On Demand
Windows 10 GDR-DU FOD
Windows 10 GDR-DU LP
Windows 10 GDR-DU
Windows 10

I understand that if I have the latest version of W10 1809 on all computers, I have to choose only Windows 10, version 1809 and later, Servicing Drivers in WSUS?

If I had more types of Windows 10 then I have to choose everyone? Or maybe Windows 10 (without any additional descriptions) means all windows?

WSUS - Unexpected reboot with an outstanding pending reboot

Hi

I am setting up WSUS to discover servers.

I don't have any WSUS updates approved.

I have set the scheduled install to occur, say Saturday 9pm.

Also I have the policy "
The restart timer can be configured to start with any value from 15 to 180 minutes. When the timer runs out, the restart will proceed even if the PC has signed-in users.

If you disable or do not configure this policy, Windows Update will not alter its restart behavior.

If the "No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations" policy is enabled, then this policy has no effect." gpmc_settingname="Always automatically restart at the scheduled time" gpmc_settingpath="Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Update" gpmc_supported="At least Windows Server 2012, Windows 8 or Windows RT" tabindex="0">

WSUS - Computer not yet reported

Hi,

I'm running WSUS 6.3.9600 on a Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter.

Only 1 WSUS server which is running over port 80. Configuration for the clients is done by GPO. Since 2 months I've a lot of clients (Win 7) which have the status "Computer not yet reported" (appr. 60 clients over 700) which for some are fresh installed an other installed from a long time.

I've already try the following:
1. On the client, run different scripts found on the forum including the "Clean Software Repository", reset authorization code, stop and start the service,....Check if there is not 2 entry for WSUS in the registry, telnet the server + port is OK. I've tested all the end-client scipts I've found on the forum, nothing change.

2. The client can ping the server and can access the web console of the server

3. On the server, change the value in IIS for "Queue Length" to 25000 and "Limit Interval" to 5

Unfortunately no changes.

I would really appreciate any help, I don't know what I can do now.

P.S: Don't recommend me to buy software which will clean the DB

Thank you very much

I keep getting error 80070643 while attempting to install KB4471813 on Windows 2008 r2 64 bit server. I have attempted to install system update readiness tool, and checked system fine integrity with SFC /scannow.  I rebooted in safemode with networking and tried to install.  None of these attempts seemed to have worked.  Is there something else I should try?

Updates for windows server 2016 not downloading in WSUS

Hi All,

We are having trouble installing updates for windows server 2016 clients. The updates are failing with the error code 0x80244019. However other operating systems like 2012 R2, 2008 R2 are working without any issues.

After some research i found that the update files are missing in WSUS content folder.

We could not find the respective file in WSUS content.

Any idea why this is happening?

Thanks in advance...

Client-Side Targeting theory question

$

Hello!

Please help me to understand the following:

- why do I need to (manually) "add domain-member computers to that group" if the purpose of the Enable client-side targeting setting is to enable client computerto add themselves to the computer group(s) created on WSUS?

In other words, shouldn't it be enough to specify the name of the computer group in the Enable client-side targeting policy setting to auto-populate the computer group (for example Test Computers) on the WSUS server?

Thank you in advance,
Michael
