Import MS17-010 for Windows 10 (1507, 1511, 1607)

Hi,

I am trying to import or approve MS17-010 for a few older PC on our network through WSUS (6.3.9600.18838).  I can see the updates for most of the older version of Windows from and prior to Windows 8 & Windows 2008.  But I cannot find how/where to get the patches for Windows 10 (1507, 1511, 1607), or update and push the patch from WSUS.

I understand KB4013198 may be the required update.  but i cannot find it even in the MS Update Catalog.

Please help

Thanks

WSUS GPO - Download only approved updates

Hello everyone,

I installed a server WSUS windows server 2019
I created a test OU with a PC
This OU contains two GPOs
- WSUS_Policy_Global
- WSUS_Group_Windows10

The WSUS_Policy_Global GPO contains this:

The WSUS_Group_Windows10 GPO contains this:

If I go to the WSUS console, I can see that the PC is back in the right group:

My issue is the following:

When I go to Update and security of the PC, and I click on "Check for updates", updates are installed.

I would like ONLY approved updates in WSUS to be installed on this machine.

Can you help me for this configuration please?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

WSUS Error 8024401F on Server 2008R2

Hello,

Since some days I get on all Windows Server 2008R2 machines the error code 8024401F. My WSUS Server is already a W2K16 Server and all other servers as 2012 and 2016 are served fine. Only on all W2k8 machines I am facing this problems. Does anyone have an idea what I can do: No GPO changes where done.

Kind Regards

Increase CPU capped "Update Status" - Slow update - while the server is running in SCVMM2016 Update5 Maintaince mode

I am sitting here, with a Windows Server 2016 Datacenter 2018-05 update, and I am doing the update to 2018-06, it feels very slow that a 40 CPU Core, with 256 GB Memory. It is a HPE Gen9 Server.

When I look in task manger, I see that Windows Modules installer Worker is only using 3-4% CPU and no more memory than 256 Mb, which make the 730mb delta update take 2 Hours to complete the update

How do I increase the speed?

why is it capped and how do I temporally assign more CPU Speed and memory, because a 730 mb delta upgrade should not take so many hours to complete?

Also why is the update speed on my Raid1 Entreprise Class Intel SSD disk capped to only do 1mb/sec and have 20 - 120 sec delays between disk activity?

No hardware errors reported on the server, and the event log shows nothing to be concerned about.

If I copy a file of 100GB, I reach 900Mb/S in matter of seconds.

Anyone know when wsus will be able to decline preview updates automatically?

WSUS server always stuck on a one update to download.

I have a wsus server that is constantly stuck on trying to download a single update.

Error in the windows event log is

Content file download failed.
Reason: The server did not return the file size. The URL might point to dynamic content. The Content-Length header is not available in the server's HTTP reply.

Source File: /c/msdownload/update/software/uprl/2019/03/windows-kb890830-x64-v5.70_2dc82158b6a00eb66764378b727525893d94d625.exe
Destination File: P:\Updates\WsusContent\25\2DC82158B6A00EB66764378B727525893D94D625.exe

I have tried to remove the approval for all instances of KB890830 and then re-approve them but it still does not download.

Can i just delete the file listed in the wsuscontent folder and let it redownload or how can i get this update to download?

Stop SLS in WSUS supported W10 1709 with Windows Apps disabled

Would like recommended registry and GP settings for Windows 10 1709 environments with App store functionality blocked, for both standalone machines without internet access as well as machines with internet access, that facilitate locally managed updates via a local WSUS and that stop associated Windows Update Engine Dual Scan functionality.

Goals for associated locally managed environments include:

1) Stop use of local network bandwidth buy all assets for continual Windows Update attempts to reach any of the following URLs:

    *.download.windowsupdate.com

    *.au.windowsupdate.com

    *.tlu.dl.delivery.mp.microsoft.com

2)  In standalone environments without any internet access, stop the following local Windows Update Control Panel "Check For Updates" response from occurring:

"Device at risk because it's out of date and missing important security Security and Quality updates. Let's get you back on track so windows can run more securely. Select this button to get going."

Thanks,

Patches don't download (WSUS & Windows Update) Error 0x80200011 BITS Download job failed because of insufficient range support

We have an Active Directory domain (Win 2012 R2 DCs) that uses a Proxy Server ('Squid', ver. 3.5.20, on Linux) to reach the internet. There's a WSUS server (also Win 2012 R2) to handle patching. Patch Server has 17 GB free on C:, 174 GB free on D: (where it stores downloaded patches). It uses the Windows Internal Database and does not download the actual patch files until they are approved.

It had apparently been working fine, but at some point it started failing to download patches.  It synchronizes directly from Microsoft Update with no errors, gets the patch list, displays applicable patches, and we approve them.  Then it starts trying to download them and fails.  Application Log shows Event ID 364 Task Category 2 "Content file download failed.  Reason: The server did not return the file size.  The URL might point to dynamic content.  The Content-Length header is not available in the server's HTTP reply".  BITS looks like it's running, but the state says 'Ignores_Shutdown'.  I tried building a clean new VM with the intent of setting up a new WSUS server to experiment with.  It is not joined to the domain.  I tried to patch it directly from Microsoft Update, not going through my WSUS server.  It fails to download patches.  The failure looks like the same problem the WSUS server is having, but the error code is 0x80200011.  The WindowsUpdate.log file looks like the BITS job is being built correctly - at least, it seems to be pointing at the proxy server correctly - but every download job has a 'Download job failed because of insufficient range support' error.  I asked the network / proxy guys if the proxy server supports http 1.1, specifically the Range Request feature, but that have not responded.

Cumulative updates explanation..

  Hello,

     A question regarding cumulative updates.

Does a CU have all the previous \ new updates for the month of updates that MS puts out for a product? Maybe not previous?

Meaning, if I have go to get updates from the internet \ Wsus, and there are 15 updates for Server 2016 security \ critical etc - whatever.. Will this CU cover all these updates?

It seems that the CU's take forever to install \ reboot etc..

If it is a combination of certain updates, which classification do they cover?

           Thanks,

WSUS - Synchronization Failures after migrating WID to SQL Instance

Hello,

Hope all is well! I have been working to resolve an issue for the better part of 2 weeks now, and do not seem to have an end in sight. I have an issue regarding synchronization between my USS and DSS after migrating the WSUS WID instance to a SQL instance. I can still pull down the Microsoft Updates to the USS; however, when I try to sync from my DSS to my USS I will continually get the same error below:

"One or more errors were found when trying to import updates into the data store, and the synchronization has failed. The next synchronization will try to import the updates that were imported in this attempt."

I have edited the registry to support the remote SQL instance:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Update Services\Setup\SqlServerName - Giving the SQL Instance Name

HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Update Services\Setup\SqlInstanceIsRemote - Set value to '1'

HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Update Services\Setup\wyukonInstalled - Set value to '0'

HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Update Services\Setup\Installed Role Services - Changed 'UpdateServices-WidDatabase' to 'UpdateServices-Database'.

Looking at the Logs 'C:\Program Files\Update Services\LogFiles\SoftwareDistribution' does yield a pretty good amount of info.

Examples:

Bad Update Revision #319: f400c36b-d4bb-424b-a4a3-c4a837b04fff/203
   at Microsoft.UpdateServices.ServerSync.CatalogSyncAgentCore.ExecuteSyncProtocol(Boolean allowRedirect)

I can paste my entire SoftwareDistribution log file if needed. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Derek

WSUS Windows 10 Drivers question

I have a WSUS infrastructure in place and use GPO to manage the settings and control which clients talk to what servers, etc.

I am not preventing Windows clients from downloading drivers in WSUS through group policy.

I have not added the Drivers Classification to WSUS either.

Is it still possible for the Windows 10 Clients to get the Drivers from Microsoft? Or do I have to add the Drivers classification to download updated drivers?

Thanks!

Are Windows 2008 systems without Service Pack affected by the critical RDP vulnerability on Microsoft Windows systems (CVE-2019-0708) ?

Hello

Within our infrastructure, we use WSUS servers for the patch management and we noticed that few of our servers based on Windows Server 2008 R2 without Service Packdid not receive the KB4499149 & KB4499180 or KB4499164 & KB4499175 related to the Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2019-0708). Furthermore they seem not to have downloaded a lot of updates compared to other systems with Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 or SP2.

So, we have 2 questions :

1/ Are Windows Server 2008 systems without Service Pack (SP1/SP2) affected by the RDS Remote Code Execution Vulnerability ?

Reference: https://portal.msrc.microsoft.com/en-US/security-guidance/advisory/CVE-2019-0708

2/ Are Service Packs required for the download/installation of MS patches on Windows Server 2008 systems ?

Thanks for your help

Windows 10 Update stuck at pending install unless I (notice this:) FLIP the option "Allow metered network"

This situation started a few months ago.

When ever new updates emerge, they stuck at pending install, forever (I usually don't turn off my PC at all for days). In the mean time, my system start to be hogged by a process called the svhcost.exe (netsvc-p) which takes half my CPU and my disk activity alike.

Windows 10 Pro 1803 OS build 17134.472 under domain environment. Update is automatically approved by WSUS.

I have a PC at home which auto updates just fine but most computer in my domain that are 1803, has this hiccup.

The process keeps reading the files I do not know detail of. But apparently it's related to Windows Update.

In the mean time the system get laggy coz all the CPU eaten up. The settings windows is ridiculously slow in response and often shows up white. Until I finally I found out that I can go to "Advanced options" and flip the option "Allow metered network". After I flip the options, update start to show 0% and then start installing.

Mind this: I need to FLIP this option every time new updates come and the system is acting up. Letting it stay on or off just do not make a different.

Does any one experience this? I can't think of a valid explanation.

Win server 2016 update issues

Since April 2019, Downloading and installing windows updates on servers with win server 2016 are too slow and for some servers is stuck checking or downloading updates, even the manual update hangs copying the files to the update cache...

Is there any way to find out the Microsoft server that windows trying to download updates from? or may be any way to run windows update in verbose mode via command line to find out why the windows update does not have any progress?

I tried GET-Windows update command but had other issue with this....

Win10 machines not talking to WSUS server

Hi,

I need some help and advice on fixing the WSUS connection issue.  Windows 10 (1809) machines from our environment getting the error "Error encountered" with error code (0x80240007) when trying to connect to our WSUS server (WSUS 4 running on Windows server 2012 R2).  When client click on the Retry button, it will work again.  But next time when machine trying to connect to WSUS again, the same error occurs.

Thanks.
