I have Windows Server 2012 that went somewhat stale update-wise (the most recent installed update dates back to June 2016). I am trying to get it patched up. The problem is that for some reason Windows Update refuses to acquire new updates. When I
click on "check for updates", it shows the green scrolling bar under "Checking for updates..." and it can sit there for hours doing nothing (there even seems to be no disk activity.)
In the Windows Update log, I see this (no idea if this is at all relevant)
2017-03-01 16:14:40:211 5476 1688 CltUI FATAL: CNetworkCostChangeHandler::RegisterForCostChangeNotifications: CoCreateInstance failed with error 80004002

As of this writing, the last entry is 4 hours old and the service has not been doing anything all this time. Judging by timestamps, last thing it did was to download an EULA for Silverlight, at 16:56.
It is not apparent to me what exactly is going wrong and how to get it all fixed, short of a clean reinstall.
Any suggestions?
Hello,
I have a kind of problem - or question: I didn't realize that I have to cleanup the WSUS database regularly and so there were a lot of entries and the known "timeout error" if I tried to run the cleanup tool. To fix that, I logged into the WID with SSMS and tried to change the timeout setting. But I only got a lot of 945 (file not found/denied) errors. After a lot of tries, i managed that instead with the WID properties with
USE SUSDB ;
GO
EXEC sp_configure 'remote query timeout', 2400 ;
GO
RECONFIGURE ;
GO
and that worked. My question / problem is the cause of the errors: The WID MSDB database is "recovery pending" and the Windows\WID\Data\msdbdata.mdf file has a last changed timestamp of two years ago. Is that a problem I should address or - because I don't see any external problems - should I simply ignore that error? And if I have to attempt a recovery, how do I do that? All the information could find about msdb recovery is for regular SQL Servers, not the WID Instance and almost everything I try fails with these 945 errors. (I checked and I do have sysadmin role).

I am using replica servers in remote offices for years. Works fine.
See the term branchcache in WSUS … is it something different/added or the same meaning.
Could branch cache be used without having actual WSUS REPLICA installed?

I will be standing up a new WSUS server shortly and would like to find all the imported updates and apply them to the new server. 1. Any ideas on how to search out imported updates vs regular brought in updates from Microsoft automatically?
2. Is there a way to make sure the server gets these updates and becomes the parent if I can't search and add them in manually as I would like to do?
Hello, comunity,
Is my firt post since a Joined,
I need you help
I'm having problems with patching through wsus and GPO.
Scenario 1- At the moment that the security patches are applied to the end users, the screen shows that in 15 minutes the PC will restart to finish the patching.
My wish: I need the security patches installed automatically but I did not force the restart because it is an entity that works with clients.
Scenario 2 - Production Servers
I am needing the servers the updates appear but the administrator manually apply the patches
My Wish: When installing security patches finished do not restart forcefully, that the administrator is the only one that can restart.
We are running Windows 10 build 1809 on about 12 different HP model computers. I would like to updating drivers on those machines with WSUS. What is the right option to choose of these two? and how big a footprint does each take?
Windows 10, version 1809 and later, Servicing Drivers
Windows 10, version 1809 and later, Upgrade & Servicing Drivers
Thanks!
Hi,
If one wanted to Configure WSUS Replica Server using GUI, there is an option to do it both during configuration and later in the Options menu:

Now, if I wanted to do it from Powershell, there seems to be one command Set-WsusServerSynchronization that can be used for this purpose.
So to sync with an upstream WSUS one could use:
Set-WsusServerSynchronization -UssServerName "Test" -PortNumber 42 -UseSSL
Then to sync with Microsoft Update:
Set-WsusServerSynchronization -SyncFromMU
But when I wanted designate server as replica I'm not sure which of the command to use:
Set-WsusServerSynchronization
-UpdateServer (downstream?)
-UssServerName (upstream?)
-Replica
I'm not sure if I have to use all of them or just:
Set-WsusServerSynchronization -updateserver - replica
I'd like to hear from some Powershell vets to shed some light on it.
Thanks in advance!
Hello!
As you can see on the screenshot, it lists a large number of unapproved updates, which are very old:
Release date: 2013-11-12
Arrival date: 2019-06-06
What happened!? Is WSUS' SQL Database corrupted? How to fix it?
The needed count is also strange for the strange language packs:
The 5 systems refer to 5 Windows 8.1 workstations.
Thank you!

Hello all,
We are trying to install 2 WSUS Servers with Hardware Load Balancing with F5 Appliance.
We have 2 Servers, 1 Remote SQL and the F5 Appliance to Load Balance. We configure both WSUS Servers with WSUSContent in a DFS Root and the SQL in the Remote SQL Server. But we notice, only one WSUS Server is able to contact at the same time with the SUSDB Database. Sometimes is Server1 and sometimes Server2.
We are thinking in use NLB but we prefer Hardware Load Balancing because is very powerful and we trust it.
Can you help us?
thank you.

Hi All
A question regarding forced reboot after scheduled patch install.
Generally all works well, where a patching is scheduled to install at certain time of the week, and then reboot is forced.
However, i run into some issues with Server 2016. Sometimes these don't reboot.
I am suspecting that Server 2016 updates takes forever to install... like 2 hours or more. If this is the case, is it possible for WSUS to ignore the forced reboot request, and wait for the next scheduled install time?
THanks
DM

Hi, does anyone know what SQL permissions are required to install this patch for WSUS to enable SHA 2 signing?
The SQL guys wont give me sysadmin to the instance hosting the SUSDB, so I need to know exactly wat permissions are required.
I thought that db_owner in the SUSDB would be enough, can anyone add to this please?

Hi all,
I'm struggling with update Windows 7 ent upgrade via Wsus.
Feature update is approved and downloaded. Client seems to download it, then at applying stage it spiels error c1900204.
There is at least 100GB free space, bitlocker suspended, no antivirus installed during upgrade.
My Win7 have few language packs, but English is set as default.
I've remove all versions apart from ENT from install.wim and this allowed me to move forward.
After 2 reboots, around 30% it's rolling back.
If any one can help, I would appreciate it.
