Import WSUS approval to security offline environmet

Hi there,

I have a problem with a WSUS Solution on Windows Server 2019. We have one online WSUS with Internet connections.

One Offline WSUS in Site A and one Replica WSUS in site B as a Test environment without Internet connection.

The Productive WSUS is also one at site A and one on site B but without network connection to the test environment.

With the online WSUS we get the Microsoft updates and copy all include the wsusutil export metadata and the WsusContent Folder to the Test WSUS on site A. Here we do the approvals. WSUS on site B is configured as a replica, this works fine. After the Test we will Copy the WsusContent folder the exported metadate (with wsusutil) and the APPROVALS to the productive environment.

I could not find a solution to export and import the APPROVALS from the Test to the Productive WSUS Server. We Use Windows Server 2019.

Did you guys have any idear

THX Gerd

Guys,

I am trying to install WSUS onto a standaline server (Offline) but encountering some issues, do you know of which patches are required after the base install of WSUS onto a windows 2008 R2 server?

WSUS Setup and Minimize Catalogue

During the WSUS setup, If I connect to the Internet, by default it selects all the products which I do not want. (I do not want even the catalog for all the products)

I just need the catalog of Windows 10. How can I achieve this? If I dont sync for the first time, I dont see Win10 product selection. Is there a way around?

Windows Update Service Unavailable

Posting this here since the errors all seem to be related to WSUS. If I should put this elsewhere, please let me know. Most computers connected to our network are unable to contact the Windows Update Server for updates. If they are connected to a VPN and tunneled to an external network, they update just fine. Most of the errors I see in the logs suggest WSUS, but we don't have it on our network.

So far, I've tried deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder, ensuring the necessary services are running/restarted, SFC, Checkdsk, DISM, reinstalling Windows, etc. I've made sure there are no firewall rules or GPOs affecting updates. Systems are affected whether or not they are domain-joined.

Are there any traces that a previously-installed WSUS server would leave behind that would cause systems to still look for it? There isn't anything in the system registry that I can find, and the logs show there as being no WSUS, but researching the errors suggests otherwise. Thank you for any help anyone can provide. Below is the WindowsUpdateLog from one attempt.

gpo when computer is offline

Hi

What happend if my computer (windows10 1903 ) is offline and not connected to power supply

and has implemented gpo policy where

Configure automatic updates:

4-auto download and schedule the install

Sheduled install day 0-every day

Scheduled install time 03:00AM

Does it mean my computer skip install updates or will try asap after back to online?

Example : employee shut down his laptop at 5pm and next day starts his job at 9pm

It means his laptop will always skip install updates?

Will be glad if someone explain it to me in few words

thx

Dominik

Security Monthly Quality Update

We have a lot of windows server 2012 servers to form a LAN,and often new servers are added,
We hope that the patch installation of all servers will be up to date in a specific month,Is it possible to  apply this period of time Security Monthly Quality Update (aka the Monthly Rollup), after the operating system is installed?

We have a WSUS server to update the patch on the LAN.
However, the number of patches installed on each machine is inconsistent,
and cannot install all patches in one update,
it is difficult to maintain the consistency of all server patches.
Is it possible to apply a secure monthly quality update (also known as a monthly rollup) on each server to achieve consistency across all server patches.

Approving drivers in WSUS

I would like to know what other IT professional do with drivers in WSUS

My boss told me not to approve drivers in WSUS because they could cause problem with laptops.

We are currently only approving Windows Updates and Surface Drivers and not approving drivers for any other component.

Can  anyone tell me if this makes sense? Is it safe to deploy drivers in WSUS?

We currently have HP Probooks 650 G3, G4, G5 running Windows 10 Pro version 1903

1909 Machines Reporting to WSUS as Build 18362 Instead of 18363

I'm running WSUS (standalone) on Server 2019.  All of our pilot machines on Windows 10 1909 are reporting to WSUS with build numbers of 18362 (1903) instead of 18363 (1909).

I understand that 1903/1909 share the same baseline and that the difference between them is basically a feature enablement package, but the different build numbers still need to be properly reported in WSUS. Otherwise, a whole bunch of reporting that I do just goes out the window.

Need help upgrading Windows 10 Machines with WSUS

I have a Server 2016 with WSUS Role installed. I have approved the feature Upgrade to Windows 10 1903 for a test group. The Upgrade downloaded to WSUS just fine and the upgrade downloaded to the Client without issue. The user selected the Upgrade Tonight option vs Schedule (wish I knew what upgrade tonight even means) and the Computer shows it is pending a Restart in the Windows Update settings Dialog. WSUS shows a status of Installation successful and restart required for the following update: Feature update to Windows 10 (business editions), version 1903, en-us x64. We left the machine overnight and it did not Upgrade or at least look like it attempted to upgrade (Does the machine just prompt the user at night?). Is there away to automate the installation of the upgrade without interaction by the users? Our PC's are authorized to install updates on there own every night at 7:00 pm however upgrades don't seem to respond to this authorization. Is there away to force the Install at a specific time without the user interacting with the upgrade?  I really want all of the machines approved for upgrades to install at night to prevent someones machine from getting high jacked by the upgrade when they need to use it. Any guidance would be great.

Thanks.

WSUS 3.0 Database Computer Status field

$

On WSUS 3.0 when I select a Group, I can filter the results on the right pane byStatus. One of the possible Status values is "Needed" wich gives me a listing of every computer belonging to the selected group with needed updates. so far, so good...

I found some information on the SQL database schema (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb410149%28VS.85%29.aspx) that supports WSUS and I'm building my own queries but I'm stuck on a detail!!!

The table-valued function PUBLIC_VIEWS.fnUpdateInstallationStateMap allows me to map the values of the fieldState on PUBLIC_VIEWS.vUpdateInstallationInfoBasic, but there's no value for "Needed"!?!?

Does anyone know where the information for the updates needed by a computer is kept? Or else, at is the mapping for the "Needed" value?

My goal is to list all updates needed by computers on a specific group and the join that result set with another query that returns the updates installed on a specific beta testers group. I want to accomplish this without any WSUS plug-ins or 3rd party software, in order to integrate with my powershell scripts.

Thanks,
Pedro Sousa

Enable Windows Update Power Management GPO question

I am solving for laptop updates for users who are taking their laptops home. I can configure the BIOS to wake up a given laptop at a specified time - such as 3am. At which point the Windows Update is configured to carry out a maintenance cycle.

My question is, with the GPO setting "Enable Windows Update Power Management to automatically wake up the system to install scheduled updates"enabled, a laptop on battery will return to hibernation when woken from hibernation, but will it return to hibernation from a fully powered on state? Versus, from a fully powered on state, Windows Update runs regardless of being connected to power or on battery. Or am I better of relying on the user to leave the laptop in hibernation and letting the power management GPO setting to negotiate the task?

The GPO setting is found at: Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update.

Thank you for your thoughtful response,

Jason

WSUS 2016 Server - No Data Listed for Update Details

$

I am seeing the following on my upstream WSUS Server when trying to look at a computer report for any update (doesn't matter if it failed, succeeded, or is downloaded and waiting, I get the same data): "No events are available. This may be because the client has not yet sent the event or the events have been purged from the server. ".

The steps I am using:

1. WSUS Console  -> <Server> -> Computers -> All Computers -> Select any computer -> In the lower half of window -> Select: Updates installed/not applicable

2. Once the report opens -> Next page -> On the next page click the status for any update.

On my Upstream Server it returns: "No events are available. This may be because the client has not yet sent the event or the events have been purged from the server. Please refer to %WINDIR%\WindowsUpdate.log on <computer-name> for details."

The downstream servers are properly reporting, detailed reports, so it seems limited to the upstream server.

All of my WSUS Servers are the same version: 10.0.14393.2969 on Windows Server Datacenter:  1607 (14393.3274)

I haven't found a fix for this yet, anyone have any ideas on a fix?

Please let me know if you need any other information.

Thanks in advance!
