WSUS content folder & synchronization problem

$

Actually, our WSUS content folder was full and that's why to reduce the size of the folder I tried the following steps and after that I am in a big trouble.

1. Close any open WSUS consoles.

2. Go to Administrative Tools – Services and STOP the Update Services service.

3. In Windows Explorer browse to the WSUSContent folder (typically D:\WSUS\WSUSContent or C:\WSUS\WSUSContent)

4. Delete ALL the files and folders in the WSUSContent folder.

5. Go to Administrative Tools – Services and START the Update Services service.

6. Open a command prompt and navigate to the folder: C:\Program Files\Update Services\Tools.

7. Run the command WSUSUtil.exe RESET.

After all the above steps, our WSUS is not synchronizing and no updates are being downloaded at all. Every time showing "Reset Server Node"

Please help me out as soon as possible.

Thanks

Yousuf

How can i stop auto restart in our servers only after the windows update from the WSUS Server

I need to stop the auto restart option to all servers after run the windows update from the wsus. I will manually run this restart to all the servers.

WSUS console & service can't start. "Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database 'SUSDB'"

Our WSUS server (Windows Server 2012 R2) hanged when it was installing updates on itself. I rebooted it in a harsh way, it started normally and finished installing the updates. However, now I can't start the WSUS management console due to a connection error. The WSUS server service itself doesn't start as well.

The Application server contains multiple events 18456, source MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID, message "Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database 'SUSDB'. [CLIENT: <named pipe>]" If I try to connect to the server using SQL Server Management Studio, it displays the following error:

"Cannot connect to \\.\pipe\MICROSOFT##WID\tsql\query. Login failed for user 'MY-LOGIN'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456)"

The Application even log contains the same event mentioned above, only the message is different: "Login failed for user 'MY-LOGIN'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT:<named pipe>]".

If I restart the Windows Internal Database service, it starts normally and doesn't throw any errors in the Application log. Among other things, it successfully mounts the SUSDB database. No other errors (including DCOM errors) can be found in the log.

Seems that security setting on the WID engine are damaged. Any ideas how to fix them? Besides reinstalling the server, of course? :)

WSUS 6.3 default install, the IIS Worker Process takes 90(+)% of the CPU's which crashes WSUS MMC Snapin

$

We have a default install of WSUS 6.3.9600.16384 we have been unable to put into production because IIS Worker Processes are consuming 90(+)% of the (4) CPU's which causes the WSUS management console to crash. The install is on a newly built Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter server with no other server Roles or Features installed. When the WSUS role was added, it added the additional required roles and features as needed, we added nothing extra.

In IIS, when the role was installed it shows 2 sites, the Default Web Site bindings on port 80 and the WSUS Administration site bindings on ports 8530 & 8531. 2,900 Machines are hitting the new server and showing up in WSUS console. We are also able to sync and pull down updates without issue.

What is occurring is that IIS Worker Processes will consume all of the CPU resources causing the WSUS management to freeze and crash. Once the management console crashes, we found that we can do an "iisreset" and once the reset has completed WSUS begins functioning without issue until the IIS Worker Processes peg the CPU's again. (Which most times only takes a few minutes after IIS has been reset.) We have done multiple new builds/WSUS installs as described above and each time we have the same issue with the IIS Worker Process pegging the CPU's.

When this occurs we see the following error in the event logs:

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.
Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.
The WSUS administration console has encountered an unexpected error. This may be a transient error; try restarting the administration console.

The IIS worker process that is causing this is the WSUSPool (process id: 7052)

Does anyone have a solution or work around to fix this issue?

Additional Note: Previously we were using WSUS 3.0 on Windows Server 2008 for several years and never encountered this issue.

I have a WSUS server to manage Windows Updates.

I set GPO to manage installations.
I set Configure Automatic Updates with option 4 - Auto download and Schedule the install.

I would like to configure servers to INSTALL UPDATES BUT NOT TO RESTART AFTER THAT. Is that possible ?

Automatically install Defender definitions on Server 2016 not working

$

We have an auto approval rule for definition updates plus the GPO to automatically install updates that don't interrupt running services or require rebooting applied to our clients including servers.

The servers are getting the updates but the definitions queue up waiting to be manually installed on these servers.

What else do we need to do to make these updates install automatically?

Value does not fall within the expected range on new WSUS install on Server 2012

I just enabled and configured the WSUS role on a new Server 2012 installation and after synchronizing with Microsoft and approving some updates, I see that none of them are being downloaded. I look in the event log and get something similar to this for each update I've approved. I have looked around on the Internet and most of the entries I find say something about a proxy server being configured wrong. We do not have a proxy server for this network and the only firewall we have is between our router and the Internet. In other words, the firewall does not interfere with anything on our intranet. I've stood up many WSUS servers on Windows 2008 R2 platforms and have never had this problem. I would appreciate anyone who can help with this.

Windows 10 machines not picking up any patches from WSUS on SUP?

$

We're running WSUS service on a software update point (SUP) on SCCM server.

And this is our configuration:

Product category:

windows 10
windows 10 LTSB
windows 10, version 1903 and later

Patch Classification:

Critical
Security

Windows 10 machines check the updates from WSUS running under SUP on SCCM, and say no patch missing or applicable in the logs.
Although, there are many patches which are not installed, so there's a conflict.

And we're able to deploy patches for office using this setup, so communication and configuration is all good at the server and client end.

Now, my question is do we need to enable "Update Rollups" as well in Classifications for WSUS or what could possibly the reason behind for patches not getting qualified for installation while it says that patch is for that particular OS on windows update catalog?
Maybe that's why the new patches are not getting eligible for installation.

WSUS sync

Hi Guys,

We recently cloned a WSUS W2008. Rebuilt the cloned machine to W2012 and shutdown the legacy. When it comes to sync from the upstream server it just gets stuck on 0% and does not seem to go anywhere.

Does anyone know how I can troubleshoot this issue. There doesn't appear to be anything in the windowsupdate.log in c:\windows.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards.

WSUS Server Unable to Sync from Microsoft

Hi All

I have been struggling the past few days to resolve my WSUS problems spending allot of time on Google. No solution at all.

My network is small with 2 Windows Server 2012 R2 servers and a mixed environment of Windows 7 and Windows 10 machines.

WSUS stopped Synchronizing updates from Microsoft a few days ago wit the below error.

WebException: The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel. ---> System.Security.Authentication.AuthenticationException: The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure.

   at Microsoft.UpdateServices.ServerSync.CatalogSyncAgentCore.SyncConfigUpdatesFromUSS()

   at Microsoft.UpdateServices.ServerSync.CatalogSyncAgentCore.ExecuteSyncProtocol(Boolean allowRedirect)

I have since tried installing WSUS on a second server with all Updates installed and getting the same error.

Any help please would be appreciated.

can't re-install WSUS

Hello.

We had a running WSUS Server 2012R2 server, but the console stopped connecting (and clients stopped updating) weeks ago. Not being able to find anything stopped services or such, I recalled that an earlier issue was resolved by uninstalling and re-installing WSUS. Ii have tried that a few times today, but the post-installation tasks fail each time. I have uninstalled the IIS role, WSUS role and WID feature, manually deleted the WID folder and the updates locations folders and then tried to re-install. The post installation tasks stops at the IIS configuration section, saying:

Any suggestions as to how I can get WSUS to re-install?
