New WSUS install on Srv 2016, Initial Synchronisation SQL issues

$

So I decided to start upgrading to Server 2016, and start with a new WSUS server.

I followed all the steps for the install.. Basic install on a clean Server Core VM, (tried both WID and SQL), set full access permissions to NETWORK SERVICE in %windir%\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v4... (as well as Framework64 just in case), %windir%\Temp as the WSUS download path.

When I'm trying to run the initial synchronisation, it always stays at 0% with no progress, even if left to run for hours.

The log file is growing ridiculously fast with messages like this:

2016-10-31 10:36:04.674 UTCWarningWsusService.30DBConnection.ExecuteCommandNoResultSqlException occurred. Number 50000 and message invalid update identity in XML for update 002370D7-F7BE-4701-B9FE-85E2092C1B85\100

http://imgur.com/o7Via3Z.jpg

I've tried over and over again, and the issue is always the same. The VM is updated with the latest CU from Windows update. Any searches online didn't lead to anything remotely similar to this.

Something tells me that the database created by WSUS during the postinstall is missing something =/

Any ideas?

WSUS not finding cumulative updates

Hi,

Currently running VMware horizon.  In the past, i've just checked for updates through Microsoft direct for my parent VM's, however now it's trying to pull a feature update even though i've deferred it.

Added the computer to a WSUS OU to test updates, it's finding MS Office updates as needed, but not any of the security/cumulative updates etc.

WSUS is working properly as some thick clients use it and they're reporting these cumulative updates as needed etc.

Any ideas on this one?  The classifications are set correctly for this build on 1803 as far as i know.

WSUS server 2012R2

Windows 10Pro (build 1909)

Situation:

Sometime last week some, not all win10 client's systems stopped working with WSUS. All 2012R2 servers kept connecting to WSUS.

The ones that failed fall into 3 different error categories:

  1. Can't communicate with server, check internet connection (on a LAN)
  2. One throws error 0x80000ffff
  3. One throws error 0x800705b4

I have researched and tried SFC Scan now and one system had corruption fixed (still not connecting)

I did DISM check health, all good

On one system I deleted SoftwareDistribution\Download to no avail

The only major software revision was updated Symantec Endpoint to current release; however, all servers work & half of my Win10 Pro clients do as well after the upgrade. I even turned Symantec off and it still does not connect.

What can I do to re-connect these win10 Pro systems (some laptop, some desktop)?

Server upgrade - not reporting to WSUS

Hi

we recently upgraded one of our servers to 2012r2 and since the upgrade its not reporting to WSUS

i followed all the steps in this link

https://www.ajtek.ca/wsus/client-machines-not-reporting-to-wsus-properly/

ive checked the registry keys for WSUS and we are already using the FQDN for the server

we also changed the IIS pool size to unlimited in case there were a large number of updates

is there anything else we can try?

its just this server that has the issue and only after upgrading the OS

Windows 2016 WSUS Server not auto downloading updates

The .net Framework updates for July broke BizTalk.  It happens.

Around July 31st Microsoft released updates to resolve this issue.  When I try to import KBs 4346877 and 4346406 into a Windows 2016 WSUS Server, I get the Error "This Update cannot be imported into Windows Server Update Services because it is not compatible with your version of WSUS." for the Windows 10, Windows Server 2016, and Windows Server 2012 R2 versions of the KBs.

In other messages in this forum, there is a workaround by changing your protocol to 1.80 instead of the default 1.20.  If I had used the Sync function of the WSUS Server instead of manually trying to import the updates I would never had know these updates were released.

My question is "How do we determine what updates needs to be imported in the Windows 2016 Server using the alternate protocol instead of the normal sync process?"

I would like to use the WSUS Server that ships with Windows Server 2016 because it handles Windows 2016 and Windows 10 Clients better than the WSUS Server that ships with Windows Server 2012 R2.  However, if the Windows 2016 WSUS Server does not Sync all the updates and I can't even determine which updates need to be "Imported", then my server environment is missing critical security updates which I can't have.

Multiple Updates Not Found in WSUS/SCCM for 2020-05

We seem to have an issue of missing patches in multiple WSUS and SCCM environments. This was discovered because we have a contract with a company which helps us evaluate risk and provide lists of Microsoft and other company's patches. This month, there are several patches which are listed by them for deployment which are not available in any of the 3 separate WSUS/SCCM environments which I have access to. Because the issue isn't isolated to one environment, I confirmed that the updates (eg. kb4552964) are supposed to be available in WSUS but are not. Even when we try to import them directly into WSUS from the Microsoft Update Catalog, they never display in SCCM.

Here is the list of patches we got from our vendor which appear to be valid, not expired, etc.:

Thanks in advance

Incorrect status

Hi,

I have WSUS on Windows server 2019. I noticed the status is incorrect for some computers. For example, it shows offline on WSUS, but the computer is actually online, or it shows 100% updates installed, however on the computer there is a message saying "You are not up to date."

I deleted one of the computer with wrong status, but the computer won't come back after I tried to reboot the computer, run "gpupdate /force" and "wuauclt /detectnow".

My questions are why the computer get wrong status and how to bring the deleted computer back to WSUS?

Need help!

Thanks in advance!

Failed to install WSUS

Hello

I tried to install WSUS on Windows server 2019, But it fails every time with message:

"The request to add or remove features on the specified server failed. the operation cannot be completed because the server that you specified requires a restart"

When I searched for this error, I found the below article that resolve it

http://eskonr.com/2013/06/wsus-role-failed-on-windows-server-2012-with-error-the-operation-cannot-be-completed-because-the-server-that-you-specified-requires-a-restart/

But what I asked about and want to understand is why this error appears, I haven't even used WID database in installation I have chosen SQL database

Is there an explanation for this ?

Thank you.

WSUS 2019 - remove Products & Classifications in GUI, but they're not removed from SUSDB!

Hi All

Struggling (again) with the GUI crashing (infamous 'An error occurred trying to connect to the WSUS console') when listing 25,000+ updates, so by using the GUI I've been deselecting unused Products and Classifications.  Then hoping running the excellent scripts found here would actually remove them:   https://blog.ctglobalservices.com/configuration-manager-sccm/kea/house-of-cardsthe-configmgr-software-update-point-and-wsus/

Even after using MS SQL Management Tools and running the scripts on the stored procedure spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup, I see no reduction in the total KB number listed in the GUI.

As a workaround I've created multiple 'Update Views' where the maximum view lists 11395 updates and the GUI appears to list without falling over.

BUT, how do I remove Products and Classifications from the DB in order to reduce the total updates?

Thanks

Lea

Wsus new install

Hi Everyone :) i am going to be doing a new install of wsus in a company with around 30 servers and 200 pcs and i have a few questions.

1. Im only going to have 1 server that i've given 8GB RAM, 40GB for the c: and 120GB for the windows update files. Is it okay to use WID instead of sql database for less than 300 computers?

2. Which products and classifications should i choose? We only have windows 10, windows server 2012, 2016 & 2019 in our environment. I only want patches and updates for the OS (not drivers) but the way the products are listed is confusing.

3. the computers and servers are all in one ou which is the 'computers' ou. Will i need to create different OUs for workstations and servers and move them accordingly? If i move them from the computers OU would it cause any problems?

4. Im concerned that servers haven't had updates in a while, what if that causes issues with them after using wsus?

5. Should i just use wsus for the servers in our environment and use intune for all our windows 10 pcs rather?

How to reinstall WSUS DB on 2008R2

$

I have an old 2008R2 server which constantly has SUS DB issues. it's grown to 10GB and giving errors that the SQL Express size ecxeeded.  I've tried the WSUS cleanup, That doesnt work

I just want to wipe WSUS and start again, whats the best process for this on 2008r2?

I've seen these steps mentioned,

Uninstall-WindowsFeature -Name UpdateServices,Windows-Internal-Database -Restart

Install-WindowsFeature UpdateServices -Restart

In between, it says to delete the WID from c:\windows\WID or C:\Windows\sysmsi\ssee.  My server has neither of these folders so I have no idea where the SUS DB is

Note, this server is also a Domain Controller, I am not 100% sure that AD isn't also using the WID so obviously I don't wont to break AD

Thanks
