KB2881073 not applicable?

$

Hi everyone

I have a questions regarding KB2881073. This update is not missing according to WSUS and Microsoft Update. However, our patch management solution indicates that this update is missing and needs to be installed. I first thought it could be a false-positive but then I manually installed it without a problem. According to the KB article (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2881073?wa=wsignin1.0), the prerequisite is Office 2010 SP2, so WSUS and Microsoft Update should offer this update to all our PCs but that's not the case. Any ideas why? Is anyone else seeing this?

Regards

Stefan

Exception from HRESULT: 0x800710D8 during post install of wsus Windows 2012 R2

I'm having problems with post-installation of WSUS on Windows 2012 R2.  When I run it from the GUI I get this:

Log file is located at C:\Users\administrator.xxxxxxx\AppData\Local\Temp\2\tmp35BC.tmp
Post install is starting
Fatal Error: The object identifier does not represent a valid object. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800710D8)

I get the same result when I run this command in PowerShell ".\wsusutil.exe postinstall CONTENT_DIR=C:\WSUS"

I've checked many forums and cannot find a solution that works for me.  Here is the log file:

KB3045171 fails to install / System Update Readiness

On one of my Win 2008 R2 servers, KB3045171 fails to install.  I've tried pretty much every suggestion such as...

1) System file checker - sfc /scannow.  It reports errors that it is unable to fix

2) Reset Windows Update Components

3) Ran System Update Readiness.  This reveals I have 2 corrupt MUM files. I've then followed instructions found athttps://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2700601?wa=wsignin1.0 by grabbing the files from another server running the same update and patch level, but the issue persists.

My output is as follows...

Any other suggestions to get this patch installed? I don't think 3rd party software is involved because the other server I got the files from is basically a clone of my problem server and it doesn't have this issue.  I may try to boot the server with issues into safe mode before running sfc /scannow and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks

Background:

Server 2008 r2 enterprise

WSUS 3.0 Sp2

KB 2734608

sql server 2008 R2 SP3

Problem: when I click on "Synchronizations" or "All updates" it shows loading 99% takes several minutes and the connections displays "connection error". The following error below is in event viewer. How do I fix this?

I have reinstalled wsus + IIS and restarted multiple times.

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.

Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.

Windows Patching

Greetings,

The patching of Windows Server(2003, 2008 & 2012) were done using SCCM on Global scale, where as the Japanese sub-organization unit use WSUS to patch the Server environments. As part of the global standardization activity, we are looking to integrate the Server patching to the Global scale model by moving it from local WSUS platform to the Global SCCM platform. However our client is worried that some of the Operating systems run on Native Japanese language platforms (Windows 2003, 2008 & 2012) and they may miss critical Japanese specific patches, if moved to global SCCM Model.

As per my understanding, all the updates are the same irrespective of the language platform and the same patches that are applicable to native English language servers are same and applicable to any other language servers.

Is my understanding correct Or Do the patches vary based on the Operating system native language pack (based on the patches that are released by Microsoft every month).

Thanks in Advance. Appreciate your support.

Hi everyone!
I´m running an WSUS Server (Version: 6.3.9600.16384).
I´ve one rule for automatic approval (for install) only for specific product Windows Defender.
But since last month the system had many updates (Classification: Updates, MSRC Severity: Unspecified) automatic set to "Approved for install".
I´d like to understand why this happens....

Many thanks in advance

Moving Windows Internal Database and Patches

I have a 2012 WSUS server I am trying to salvage. I believe the WID Database is having issues. My server is a downstream server. Clients will have issues occasionally downloading and installing patches. Usually 1-2 patches per cycle it seems. I am running the WSUS cleanup weekly as well.

The WID DB and patches all live on the same C: drive with the OS. This is not recommended best practice. Like I said, I believe the WID DB has some issues, so I would like to move it to a newly created drive, and off the C: drive.

What is the process of accomplishing this? Also, once done, does my WSUS server re-download all patches from the upstream server? Meaning, this would be better done over a weekend to allow the download time.

At this point, will the DB and patches be on the new drive, or will the patches need to be moved as well?

Thanks!

Email notification trouble

Hello all!

I've deployed the WSUS in my network recently and I've tried to setting up the email notification.

My email server is Exchange Online (Office 365) and I've tried to use the following configuration:

Email Notification Configuration

But, when I take a test, I receive this message:

Client was not authenticated to send anonymous mail during MAIL FROM
   em Microsoft.UpdateServices.Internal.BaseApi.SoapExceptionProcessor.DeserializeAndThrow(SoapException soapException)

Is there something more I should do?

NOTE: I'm sure the user and password are correct.

Thanks in advance.

Different versions of Windows Update Agent on my clients

We are using WSUS 3.0 SP2 on a Windows Server 2008R2 machine.  I had a couple of machines that were experiencing failures when trying to update and upon review of the WindowsUpdate.log file I noticed some of them have a version 7.6.7600.256 and some have 7.6.7600.320.  One has core 7.6.7600.256 and Aux 7.6.7600.320 shown in the log.  I was concerned that one of the servers wasn't getting updated properly so I went to do a manual update through Start, Windows Update, check online and it prompts me to update the Windows Update software in order to check for updates.

I have all Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 machines.  What version of the Update client should be installed.  If it should be 7.6.7600.320, how do I get it pushed out through WSUS?

New WSUS Install

Hello All,

I just finished installing the WSUS role and configured it for the first time.  However, during the install I pointed the App to store its updates on the D:\WSUS but after the install I looked on the C:\windows\WID\DATA and saw the SUSDB.mdf.  Should this not be found on the D:\WSUS?  We did I go wrong?

WSUS issue after updates

Everything was going along just fine with WSUS on our SBS 2011 server until app three weeks ago. After installing MS updates WSUS is up and running but our clients (and the server itself) are not picking up any of the new updates that are synchronizing to WSUS from Microsoft. When I highlight the computers in WSUS, All Computers it shows that they have updates that have not been installed (and they have yellow exclamation marks) but when I run Check For Updates from the workstations they say that Windows is up to date. I know of two other companies using SBS 2011 and they have the same problem. How do I resolve this?

Fully automating WSUS

Greetings,

First time setting up WSUS on Server 2012 R2. Configured it to download what I wanted. Set up the auto approve.

Set up a group policy targeted to the whole domain.

New machines installed into the domain and nothing happens.

What's missing? Some articles Ive seen talk about running wuauctl /detectnow on every machine. That sounds ridiculous -  cant I just configure something in group policy so that the client starts receiving updates?

How can I automate this so that when any new machine joins the domain, it picks up the group policy and eventually gets all he updates from WSUS without touching the clients?

Thanks

Difference between Sync and Status for WSUS Clients

$

I'm working through some troubleshooting and am trying to find when the last time a client interacted with a WSUS server. I am using powershell to do this and am wondering what the difference is between the status variables named 'LastReportedStatusTime' and 'LastSyncTime'.

Where the head-scratching comes in is when I see a client with the following data:

LastReportedStatusTime = 2/24/2015 3:30
LastSyncTime = 5/20/2015 15:22
LastSyncResult = Suceeded

Can someone clarify this for me?

WSUS - April 2015 Updates not synced from Microsoft

Hi,

we have problems to sync April 2015 Updates from Microsoft!
I synced multiple times in the last 10 hours, but the updates are not synced.

Are there know problems, syncing the newest updates from Microsoft?
Normal Windows Updates is working, without problems!

I also set up a new machine, same result -> no April updates.

We use WSUS 6.3.9600.16384 (Windows 2012 R2).

Thx

Local Policy Preventing Non-Administrators to install Windows Updates

$

We have a Group Policy on a set of Windows 7 x64 computers that are used by public safety dispatchers that basically sets the user environment on the computer. It prevents right click on the desktop and taskbar, specifies their available applications and basically locks down the computer so they can really only do dispatching. These computers receive vendor approved Windows Update via  WSUS server configured to install the approved updates and notify the users to install them. The user should be able to click on the Windows Update Notification icon and choose to reboot to finish installing their newly installed updates, however when they do they receive a message stating " This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

I have have narrowed it down to a specific policy, but which setting is preventing use of the applet I have not been able to determine. I tried removing anything to do with notifications but they were not the issue. I have exported the configured settings and have attached them. If anyone has any ideas on how to identify which policy item is causing this I would be very grateful.

Thank you in advance,

David R.

Hi everyone,
I normalized the below tables but I am finding it difficult to copy data to the new tables.  How do I copy data from existing table to the normalized tables? I will appreciate your help with this. Please see the table structure below and other supporting information:

SKU_DATA(SKU,SKU_Description,Department,Buyer) Note: this table already has data in it.

CREATE TABLE SKU_DATA (

SKU   IntegerNOT NULL,
SKU_Description       Char(35)NOT NULL,
Department          Char(30)  NOT NULL,
Buyer   Char(35)  NULL,
CONSTRAINT SKU_DATA_PKPRIMARY KEY (SKU)

The table structure above have two three determinants( SKU,SKU_Description and Buyer).  SKU and SKU_Description are candidate keys. Primary key is SKU.

Normalization : SKU_DATA(SKU,SKU_Description, Buyer)
                        BUYER(Buyer,Department)

Updated WSUS console on Windows 7

Hi,

I have WSUS v6 running on Server 2012.  I manage it via my Windows 7 PC using the WSUS v3 console.

Can the console on my Win7 PC be updated to the same version as on the server?  It seems to still function correctly except for displaying some Windows 8 computers as running XP Home Edition.

I cannot find an installer or an update for the console on Win7.

cheers

jc
