KB3185330 Times out running cleanupintlcache.exe

Hello,

I tried installing KB3185330 several times on one of our servers and each time after the reboot it would fail and attempt to roll back.

The section causing the problem was running cleanupintlcache.exe and the CBS.log showed it was failing to complete in the 'allowed' 15 minutes.

The root cause of the problem was the number of user profiles on the box (a citrx gateway) as it had over 3000 user profiles on it. After deleting most of the profiles and trying the patch install again it went on fine and finished the post reboot section within a couple of minutes.

I hope this info helps anyone experiencing the same problem.

Update downloads hanging post KB3159706 install

Simple config... upstream server and downstream server.  We're starting to get a few Windows 10 clients and I wanted to get Anniversary Update on a few of our IT machines.  I find out about the lovely KB3159706 process and work through it all. Went okay.  I am still syncing.  I'm getting current defender updates.  However, I get downloads that are permanently stuck at, say, 187.28MB of 187.28MB.  If I look at the event viewer I see:

I've tried a wsusutil reset.  I've installed KB3095113-v2 and added the .esd MIME type to IIS.

Google is running out of ideas.

I'm running out of ideas.

I have a Premiere case open, but hasn't been much help yet.

I do notice that they're always Windows 10 files... so perhaps Microsoft started signing the new files with a new cert CA?

Any ideas would be awesome.

Windows 2012r2 WSUS Client not updating

Hi,

I have a WSUS Windows 2012R2 server running on Hyper-V.

The problem is that W2012R2 clients are not updating.

The errors that I get on the logs are:

I have tried several things in order to make the clients work - run cmd as Administrator on the client:

  1. Stop windows update service - delete c:\windows\softwareDistribution\ - Start windows update service - run wuauclt /detectnow
  2. run sfc /scannow
  3. run windows update from powershell using powershell windows update module

I have also tried cleaning up WSUS server using WSUS cleanup wizard 

NONE OF MY ACTIONS WORKED OUT. I would really appreciate any help on the case because I am stuck.

via WSUS. We already have the antivirus solution implemented and I don't need this bandwidth eater. I can decline it but don't want to do it

My content folder in the Registry and Shared folders is   D:\WSUS...

But SCUP gets the following error when I try to publish an update:

Taken from SCUP.log file..

Publisher.SignPackageCabError signing cab file E:\wsuscontent\updateservicepackages...   

I have searched known config files/registry/shared file, variable path for an entry using "E:\wsuscontent\"

I can't seem to find the right place/file..

WSUS Server 2016 not working

Hi,

I'm playing around with Server 2016 and WSUS. I have set up a lab with a few servers (all 2016 core and gui) and one 2016 with a gui and the WSUS role (updated with all updates from Microsoft online).

WSUS is working, http://127.0.0.1:8530/ClientWebService/client.asmx is reachable (from WSUS itself and from other clients).

Problem: Clients appear in the WSUS console but none of them (gui and core server) are able to install updates. If triggered from a client, needed updates appear but after downloading is complete the installation won't start (I think the problem is that the downloads aren't working). I've installed the service stack update on one of the servers but even then the server can't update the remaining ones...

Hi Guys ,

As command "wuauclt /updatenow" have to take effect in system which users is logging on . So I want to find some other command or methods which can trigger windows update install action right now in background and without user logon.

The purpose is that I can speed up the progress of windows patch deployment . I can finish the windows update installation at only one night even update needs to install over 3 times or even more.

Standard problem with WSUS Cleanup Wizard timing out without removing any unnecessary updates. SBS2K8. WSUS 3. 6000+ unnecessary updates awaiting approval. Huge database. Unresponsive SQL server. Lot of people have this problem:

Drives are regularly defragged in the background. Not gonna shut down the server and have down time just to fix this.

Tried the reindexing script from

, (don't copy the command line, it has weird characters in it, just type it in manually.) and it completes but it didn't improve anything.

For anyone who is getting Timeout Expired with obsolete updates. I have a solution! Use server name : "
\\.\pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\sql\query
" to connect with SQL managment studio. Once connected manually run "
exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup
". This will return a list of obsolete ID's. For each one run "
exec spDeleteUpdate @localUpdateID=000000
", where 000000 is the ID. For myself I found the first ID in the list took a full 37 minutes to delete and then after that I could run the cleanup through the GUI as per usual.

Found that you actually need to do:

exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup

And to connect in the first place, I had to hit Options, and select named pipe from the middle pull down. 

First delete took 6 minutes and memory has spiked up to almost 15GB in use out of 16GB physical. But the WSUS console (Update Services) still shows the same number of old updates. Failure? I don't think so: I'm running the cleanup wizard again and so far it isn't timing out... It has run over night, and has made some progress; the bar has moved perhaps 5%. 

So... My take is that the SQL server causes this problem when there is to much data, because the indexes are poorly designed (not because the indexes need to be re-indexed) causing the first query to time out, which causes the cleanup to fail. Once you get past that first deletion, and have everything loaded into memory, the cleanup tool can stay connected long enough to delete each unneeded update.

Next step will be to find a command line method, such as:
http://wsus.codeplex.com/releases/view/17612
and put it into the task scheduler like Microsoft should have done at the beginning to keep this from getting out of hand.

Products and Classification question

Hi,

environment: Windows 7, 8.1, 2008R2, 2012R2 + Office

I want to be sure that my previous selections in Products and Classifications: Critical and Security Updates are enough for getting all Security and Critical patches (Cumulative Updates now) for Windows 7, 8.1 and Servers2008R2.

Should any other be selected for optimal security?

wsus driver deployment

need to deploy a driver by WSUS.

enabled Drivers node (Products and Classifications)

imported the driver from MS Catalog. When comes to approval it shows:

the selected update requires user input. I cannot accept popup on user end for driver installation confirmation.

Is there a way to eliminate user acceptance popup? If not I have to use GPO for deployment.

WSUS console & service can't start. "Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database 'SUSDB'"

Our WSUS server (Windows Server 2012 R2) hanged when it was installing updates on itself. I rebooted it in a harsh way, it started normally and finished installing the updates. However, now I can't start the WSUS management console due to a connection error. The WSUS server service itself doesn't start as well.

The Application server contains multiple events 18456, source MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID, message "Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database 'SUSDB'. [CLIENT: <named pipe>]" If I try to connect to the server using SQL Server Management Studio, it displays the following error: 

"Cannot connect to \\.\pipe\MICROSOFT##WID\tsql\query. Login failed for user 'MY-LOGIN'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456)"

The Application even log contains the same event mentioned above, only the message is different: "Login failed for user 'MY-LOGIN'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT:<named pipe>]".

If I restart the Windows Internal Database service, it starts normally and doesn't throw any errors in the Application log. Among other things, it successfully mounts the SUSDB database. No other errors (including DCOM errors) can be found in the log.

Seems that security setting on the WID engine are damaged. Any ideas how to fix them? Besides reinstalling the server, of course? :)

WSUS 3.2 on SBS 2011 Standard. Windows 8.1 pro status "not yet reported"

Wiped HD and clean install of SBS 2011 Standard using media that came with it. (Dell T110 II) Synced server with MS and installed all updates on the server, offered by WSUS 3.2.

Performed clean install of Win 8.1 pro on a workstation, joined to domain and status was "not yet reported" after a few hours. Downloaded and installed KB2734608 on server and upon reboot the 8.1 workstation was reporting and updating from WSUS as it should.

Next, performed clean install of Win 8.1 pro on two more identical workstations. Joined them to domain. Yet 24 hours later, status in WSUS is still "not yet reported". Reapplied KB2734608 and still not change. Then I installed KB2720211 following the pre-install and post install instructions. Rebooted, and still no change. Note that for KB2720211 there is no nlb.exe since this server only has one NIC, negating the need for load balancing anyway. I reapplied KB2734608 again, rebooted and still no change.

The first computer with 8.1 on it continues to successfully report to WSUS. the two computers joined to the domain after the application of the first hotfix, are still "not yet reported". Here's the log file from one of those two 8.1 computers.

WSUS syncing from upstream server takes forever

I am just deploying a new WSUS server in our company. The old one (server1) is WS 2008 R2 and runs WSUS 3. It downloads updates directly from microsoft. There are a few other WSUS servers in different facilities working as replica downstream servers and have server1 defined as their upstream server. In the main office I've now installed WSUS on a member server (Windows Server 2012) and configured exactly like the other replica servers - server1 is it's upstream server.

Now, when I try to sync nothing happens. I've waited for several hours but a. there is literally no traffic visible in resource monitor between those two servers and b. the size of the WSUS folder is not growing. Not even 1 byte.

The two servers are on the same subnet and I have already done all steps listed under this link except for the one with the HTTP protocol because I do not get this event and there is no proxy between the two servers.

On server1 the new one gets registered but "Mode" is "Unknown" while the other ones are written "replica".

(Before you ask, I have tried it with firewall disabled on both ends, no luck. Port 8530 is open on both server's firewall)
